RIP to The Amazing Johnathan. His 1996 Comedy Central special had it all. Jokes. Magic. Cartoonish gags. Sex. Drugs. And treating the audience like a bunch of rubes. The absolute height of the form. https://t.co/OKyskcKwUM

RIP Nicky Tesco. For the duration of the run from “The Sound of the Suburbs” to “Offshore Banking Business” (i.e. a few weeks in the spring of 1979) they were my favourite band, along with Chic and (the) Village People. In retrospect, it was all about that bass. When white punk boys went reggae and dub (post-“(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais”, but before the Specials and the Beat and the rest of the 2 Tone scene)

We're extremely sad to hear of the passing of Shirley Hughes. Having written and illustrated over 200 books, Shirley was a master of creating beautiful characters that stand the test of time. A world without Alfie or Dogger would be a world lacking.

I could see the cogs really turning in F’s brain the first time I read him Dogger. It was a world he completely recognised - school fair, ice-cream van - and also a story about kindness, responsibility and little sacrifices. RIP Shirley Hughes.

Autherine Lucy Foster, the first Black student at the University of Alabama, has died at 92. Her time there lasted only three days; attacked by mobs, she was suspended and then expelled. Today, a campus building is named in her honor. https://t.co/sKqm6qysZF

Rod Marsh, Australian wicket keeper... and when I say Australian, there was none more Australian.

Resident Papist (Tom D.), Friday, 4 March 2022 12:59 (two years ago) link

Actually, he was a lot more sportsmanlike than the average Australian cricketer. He expressed his disapproval of the 1981 underarm bowling incident and, on another occasion, told the umpire that a snick from Derek Randall had not carried, even though the umpire had already given Randall out and he was on his way back to the pavilion.

I read that he held the team record for most beers downed on the long-haul flight to the UK for an ashes series. Which seems quite characteristically Australian (or British tbf).

calzino, Friday, 4 March 2022 14:06 (two years ago) link

Much loved Tasmanian batsman David Boon is said to have claimed the record of 52 beers consumed on Australia's plane trip to London ahead of the 1989 Ashes series

oh no I'm wrong, his record got beaten!
