for all steely dan ever broke through here i couldn't call them in any way unique, notably they just sound like a mix of other bands on an off day (thin lizzy playing a toto album track but without any real interest)

I bet you could approximate any band with a linear combination of all other bands. I bet glenn is doing it...right now.

Axl Rose was never as impressive a singer as some people may want you to believe.

Cool, so he can sing five octaves... his tone for half of it still sounds like shit to me.

Most vocal coaches actually shit on Axl's technique. He's a baritone who came up with a screechy falsetto that fit the sleazy nature of their music. I love his vocals, but he's a good bad singer IMO

Lana Del Rey makes laughably bad music.

Rabies is the best Skinny Puppy album.

That is controversial for Skinny Puppy fans, uncontroversial for people who only know "Worlock"

Fans know Rabies wasn't a true SP album. The Process... now that would probably raise some eyebrows.

I'm not saying it's better than their other work by a huge margin...but it's appreciably better. The songs are hookier, the guitars work really well in context...it's a really good record. Once upon a time, Al Jourgensen had really good pop instincts, and he brought them to that project.

With Jourgensen on board, I'm surprised it wasn't called "Rabies Home Journal" or something

Agreed, but the hookier songs and rock guitars are exactly why it isn't as beloved by fans. It's just not a real SP album. They should have just called the band Rabies and had it be a one-off side project like a lot of other great stuff Jourgensen was doing back then.

Brave take, but I couldn't disagree more. I guess my controversial Stevie opinion is that Innervisions is by far the weakest of his "big four" 70s albums.

I'd go Songs... > Talking Book > Fulfillingness' > Innervisions, but there are no wrong answers when we're talking peak Stevie

If Songs had been a single album, it would be the best by a wide margin.

In the spirit of this thread, let me also state for the record that the Red Hot Chili Pepper's version of "Higher Ground" is better than the one on "Innervisions".

There are like 5 Stevie Wonder songs I adore and consider some of the best music ever made. I can do without the rest of his catalog, don't care for a lot of the textures he uses and other production choices. Basically he's the 70s Prince wrt me.

Agree with this, except Prince has more songs I like.

"70s Prince" is not a formulation I had thought of but it i pretty apt.

I can't think of a similarly prolific artist with no duds in their catalog.

There are some artists who produced very little output but all of it was excellent. Like Katharine Anne Porter. Most folks with a lot of output have some filler or failed experiments in there.

I don't know if I've ever mentioned this on here, but I know a surprising story about Axl Rose. I once read a biography of the Pet Shop Boys, where they claimed Axl Rose was a huge behind-the-scenes PSB fanboy. He even brought them a bouquet of red roses and told them that their song 'October Symphony' was his inspiration for 'November Rain'. This was in the early 90s, at the height of GnR's fame. Who would have thought?

I should say, he waited for them backstage at a show and brought them flowers.
