new episode bugged me a little bc the mirroring of Michaels situation on her ship & Bookers situation on his ship like do u seee every 5 minutes ughhhhh WE GET IT

but fine otherwise

absurd that they didn’t open fire

hate it when the needs of the many are outweighed by the needs of this one guy people find likeable

am I going crazy or did they not try to explain to Book the crucial plot point they uncovered at the end of the prior episode about what the device was

i thought they mentioned they’d sent him the info and then there was a bit of dialogue where he said “that’s interesting but if doesn’t make any difference”

i have no faith that they'll wrap it up well, but i do respect the turn they've taken with this species 10c. there are good storytelling reasons why humans/vulcans/klingons/romulans/etc. have more or less the same level of technology, but they really should have been running into civilizations that are much more advanced -- and not necessarily friendly -- way more often. (and without turning them into easily thwarted clowns, as voyager did with the borg.)

I think I have a pretty low tolerance for characters acting well below real-life stupidity as a cheap and easy way to raise the stakes and dramatic tension, so I have yet to finish the second episode back.

I didn’t mind this ep

(but lol at the “Saru’s farewell to beard guy” scene, I couldn’t even remember what his position was - I guess maybe the actor took a break and it was just housekeeping but honestly these guys are so anonymous that it would have been better to just handwave the crew change with one line of dialogue)

that was either reese or bryce iirc. happily, removing one of them means they can no longer have made-up disagreements about strategy

cool so turns out that species 10c love their children too, what a relief that they weren't an unknowable cosmic horror with motives beyond human comprehension because that woulda been a bit interesting

ok so next week i guess they have to work out a way to convert human feelings into fairy dust, then pack it all into a photon torpedo of emotion and fire it into the heart of the CGI thing

then everyone will feel seen and we can finish a season that never really felt like it started

if you look at imdb user ratings you’re going to get exactly what you’re looking for, in my experience

IMDB is bizarrely anti-woke/anti-SJW/anti-anything not white male nerd. They will EVISCERATE any show that big-ups women, POC, assault victims, sci fi shows not using all wite ppl etc. Like to the point where I feel like there's brigading going on?

as probably mentioned upthread, i try and be a painstakingly respectful and humble human but there is something about the scripting of this show that makes me feel like a cranky conservative asshole, maybe this is the true magic of star trek

right!? i was complaing to mr veg last week about how the fuck do they get ~anything~ done or achieve any objectives as part of starfleet when they’re constantly talking out their feelings on every single decision!? i felt like a cranky old boomer lmao

idk whatever bakula was, they do something but a plot device from some showrunner fucks them

yesterday I got halfway through a bitchy post about how Discovery can be at red alert with shaky camera and smoke and blood on the bridge and an assailant relentlessly hurling crackling death energy at a terrified crew... then Burnham will say "Saru, a moment?" and they'll jump cut to the ready room where everything is soft focus and ferns and water features, and Michael and Saru gently touch each other's upper forearms and express their appreciation for togetherness at this difficult time

then I felt unkind and didn't post the post but I'm posting it now because GEEZ sometimes its like the show is its own SNL Parody (if anyone cared enough about this show to parody it)

heh should have mentioned i did quite enjoy this episode! altho can’t help thinking that s1-s2 gonzo discovery would have got here by about ep 4 and spent 3 eps hallucinating inside 10-C’s hyperstructure before undergoing a shocking paradigm shift that changed everything, with Detmer revealed to be the borg queen

that moment where Michael & Saru have their yelling therapy moment in the middle of idk diplomatic negotiations? idk idk but omg it just about brought me to full red mist like are you fucking kidding me with this fucking shit

ha yeah and Saru fretting about getting laid with 4 hours left til the destruction of the universe… actually when i put it like that maybe it seems reasonable

overall this season was a very 6/10 viewing experience - actually that is probably a bit generous?

The pacing really undermined this season (i.e. the endless Stuart Smalley affirmations) which was disappointing considering some of the spectacular visuals. It probably should have been 10 episodes.

i liked thd finale okay, some good moments … but when they were talking to the 10C i was like, all this imprecise language & feelings & belonging whatever like how would they even get wtf you are talking about YOU KNOW YOU DONT *SHARE* A LANGUAGE right!?

An OK ending, but Book being returned was obvious. I even used the phrase "he'll come back a la Close Encounters" and there he was, being delivered in a big ball of light, silouhette wallking towards them.

The leap from "thats too nuanced a concept to convey" to "I am going to use full sentences with cultural concepts and you will totes understand it all" within the space of what had to be an hour bugged me quite a bit.

Also, why the eff didnt the NiVar president lady just use her telepathy hours earlier mightve saved loads of trouble?

coked-up Season 2 Disco might’ve had the balls to do it - and then reveal that he’s mirror universe Burnham’s father and also half-Gorn and a fanatical disciple of Sybok

that would have been so good

feels like this season was the most conventionally Star Trekky? or at least aiming for that, pulling back on the head-spinning ultra-compressed narrative, plot jackknifes and weird stuff with mushrooms - i guess they started to change tack last season but the jump to a far future setting distracted from it maybe

anyway feel like it is in danger of settling down into a “mid-to-late Voyager” vibe - i mean for all i know that is now a prized aesthetic but it felt pretty boring at the time
