Gotta say the next season of Curb is looking pretty, pretty good.

Imagine watching an early episode of CYE and a man from the future telling you that the cast member who would basically turn out to be an OK guy in real life is Richard Lewis

Leon's doing ads for a sportsbook, which is also gambling but at least is way more fun than watching some graph move up and down

Again, does anyone really expect Larry to be reading Twitter threads or listening to tech podcasts about crypto and why he shouldn't be accepting 5 oil drums full of cash to star in a commercial for some company?

Phone rings, Larry picks up: "Hello? Yeah, OK, yeah, uh-huh.. crypto? Uh yeah not really. Uh huh ...bitcoin sure. Not a clue. Computer money, got it, fantastic. Look anyway, I've got to get go- oh? How many oil drums of cash you say?"

I saw a Patton Oswalt betting ad the other day too. Zero respect for anybody who shills for gambling. Encouraging people to fuck their lives? You don't have to make money that way, daddy-o.

I have been watching both Curb and episodes of The Flintstones and have noticed a similarity in their use of the oboe instrument

Been thinking that I need to rewatch this start to finish. It's been so long. I didn't realize Leon still lived with Larry lol.

I so badly want this series to stick the landing but Irma and Maria Sofia are almost a non-starter for me. Easily the worst characters of the series. Only prime Leon and Richard Lewis can save it.

Deep down, I thought this first episode back was bad telivision. But deeper down I don't care about that because it's Curb and it's bloody great! Leon's back, Larry's back, they can make the worst television in the world in this offensively formulaic way, and I will still gulp it down every week and say thank you very much sir afterwards

AI's next step is being able to create Curb episodes from scratch. The formula is so there for it.

it was okay. I dont mind Irma or Maria Sofia, imo the issue with this was the storyline with the wealthy South African guy which feels like a slight variation of a plotline they've done 7 or 8 times now

the return of this show did remind me of what is probably my favorite Seinfeld moment though

there's an episode where Jerry and Elaine are outside and they spot Frank Costanza, who is talking with a mysterious man in a cape, played by Larry David. George spends most of the episode trying to figure out who this man is. it turns out to be his lawyer. at the end of the episode there's a woman who Kramer may have impregnated who is considering throwing herself off a bridge. Larry David shows up to save her. she looks at him and says "Who are you?" and he just replies, "I'm Frank Costanza's lawyer"

First episode was way too rushed or overstuffed? Pacing was way off to me, the Larry vs. maid part felt forced... idk! It felt more like a cartoon based on Curb than the show itself.

yeah, it felt overstuffed to me. the car phone scene I didn't like. what was the point of it? if it was established that siri was messing up and calling people, then it ties into the end.

the lunch tray scene too - he takes the tray. ok, that's it?

i liked the show, but the show used to be tighter

they were usually better about weaving all those moments together more naturally, yeah exactly

The combo of ridiculing fat shaming and emotional support animals on planes feels...more like Adam Carolla circa 2014. Still, first episode's fun as usual, esp. the glasses.

Given how Curb episodes work, I expected Leon's cake-slice stealing to be what gets Larry kicked out of the party somehow. For this show, weird to have just a comic loose end that doesn't have consequences.

yeah I was wondering about that too it's almost like an entire plotline got cut out except for one scene. they don't really ever dangle loose plot threads out like that do they? that was Seinfeld's thing too, every little side bit would always come back

Second ep brought the ruckus but please, Larry, keep the core: Leon, Susie, Jeff, Richard, Funkhauser, Cheryl, Ted and Mary, various aggrieved service workers.

The guy who played Funkhauser died in 2019 unfortunately

feel like the long break between seasons is kinda hurting it, I mean It's Always Sunny did a Giuliani hair dye joke two seasons ago, and the water bottle thing Larry got arrested for was so wrapped up in the insanity of the 2020 election that I think most people forgot about it. anyway this episode was better than the first even if pretty much everything in it rehashes something from the show's past. it's still funny but I'm glad this is the last season. at this point I'm convinced Larry is gonna try to end this exactly the same way Seinfeld did.

This series definitely feels like a compilation of Curb’s greatest hits…oddly reminiscent of an Elton John or Stones farewell tour…crowd pleasing not exactly groundbreaking

The lawn jockey bit goes all the way back to the cigar store Indian in Seinfeld.

not to mention the Judy doll episode where he has to replace something very specific

I will say the Mocha Joe lookalike made me laugh a lot

these two episodes were much better than the first, less cluttered.

getting a lot of Mr. Takahashi this season

I kind of feel like at this point it's more like a show about Curb than it is actual Curb? Like, "let's enjoy watching one more round of [this character] doing [this character] thing." It's comfort TV, which is a weird thing for Curb to be. Not to say I am not enjoying it.

there are some funny subtle details, like Leon writing LEON across his 7/11 Big Gulp, even though Larry is the last person in the world who would touch a mystery Big Gulp

I was about to come back and say wait didn't funkhauser just die too but that was 5 years ago. Time means nothing these days. I blame COVID.

feel like the last few seasons have all been like that - first few episodes drag, then it gets good after that

definitely seems like he's gonna re-do the last episode of Seinfeld - I think every episode so far has had a pretty overt reference to the show (Ted Danson and the pen this week) - also Larry saying "I could go to jail for a year!" kinda gives it away

sometime during the 2000s, Spirit airlines had celebrities record the airline safety information that would be played before takeoff. Richard Lewis was one of them and it was so hilarious they even allowed his to be played. I remember the part during the "in case of a water landing" section and he makes a crack that was essentially "you're dead if that scenario even happened."

its got to end with some link between him getting free of Irma but then going to jail or having to chose between supporting Irma or jail, and him choosing going to jail.

final pay off will be him in jail with the guy he gave the jacket to in episode 2, who hates him now....

I had no idea about this and it is conjuring even weirder finale possibilities...

except RFK wasn't running when this was written/filmed, also I don't think it's really well known that Cheryl is married to him? but yeah it's pretty strange.

last episode was kind of strange in that you had Conan playing himself, but Steve Buscemi also pops up *not* playing himself, although he's not a character in the show
