I am joining the chorus— I love Reasonable Doubt and a smattering of tracks here and there, but if we're talking NYC rappers from that period, I will always, always stan for Nas over Jay, any day of the week.

As for Kanye, I just don't pay attention to anything he does, tho I still think the picture of the Clipse with Kenny G backstage at one of his concerts is among the funniest images of musicians ever.

It was a musical “E”- Clipse!! Honored to share the stage with these talented guys! #SundayService pic.twitter.com/hbiH0ZcTKR

There have been a lot of individual Jay Z tracks I've enjoyed, some all on the same album, but no albums of his I take out on any sort of regular basis. That includes Reasonable Doubt, that includes The Blueprint, just not really my thing. I'd have to look at a calendar or something, but I don't think the rap I was listening to at the time included any of the heavy hitters, as far as I can remember. Though I do remember really enjoying Unplugged, which was fun.

The first 'just buy the greatest hits' rapper.

Nas' albums between 1996-2002 are far worse than Jay-z's, but the latter's don't exist. In the download era my students didn't think he existed before The Blueprint.

My son is not a fan of most of the rap we're talking about. It bores him, even my beloved "Warning". But to be honest, a lof of old rap doesn't hold up for me - if I was gonna listem to hip-hop from 1996-2009 or whatever I'd probably want a long playlist, not albums. This genre evolves so fast. (There are exceptions that do hold up, of course.)

Kanye's "You always askin' for Buddha, you a Budapest" on the Playboi Carti album was an all time groaner

oh, I should say that Jay Z's Timbaland collabs are all pretty killer.

Yeezus was the last Kanye album I thought had some great stuff on it, and also includes one of my favorite quatrains in rap history.

I haven't been paying close attention to the drama around his Netflix doc, but I just saw the headline for this NY Times article and holy shit, they've been working on this for 20 years? That's ridiculous, imagine if someone was doing a doc on Prince in 1977 or the Beatles in 1961...

j.o.h.n. in evanston (john. a resident of chicago.), Monday, 14 February 2022 15:17 (two years ago) link

This isn't *quite* the same, but it could be like watching a film of a favorite actor before they went off the deep end, like "remember when they were a young and charming idealist hoping to make it rather than the spoiled asshole they've become now?" Bittersweet, but regardless, I'm sure the first installment will be good, where Kanye is literally knocking on doors and shopping his demos to people who just smile politely and send him on his way. It's the type of thing every artist has talked about in their bio or doc, but it's crazy when you can actually SEE it.

birdistheword, Monday, 14 February 2022 19:54 (two years ago) link

Looked it up, guess it isn't a quatrain (I hear it as ABCA, it's just AA). It's the one you would expect about Deepak Chopra and 2Pac, I remember listening to the album for the first time on my blastbox riding to a friend's party and I nearly rode off the road and got into an accident when I heard that line.

Literal worst combination.

He's been enabled years past the point of return and it's only going to get worse.

That said, "No More Parties in LA" never fails to affect me. It still sounds just as dope as it did 5-6 years ago.

It is dumb, but I feel like "dumb high school shit" undersells how dangerous his behavior is becoming. This is textbook abuser behavior.

xp - except your average high schooler doesn't have an audience of 13.6 million followers with a not insignificant percentage of that cheering his misogyny and threats of violence on.
