Argh what 90s/00s alt pop hit uses the same chord progression as “The Devil & Mr Jones”?? It’s driving me crazy. (Also really not into this song!)

I think it’s Weezer, “Island in the Sun”

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Saturday, 12 February 2022 20:00 (two years ago) link

Yeah, it’s conquering me.

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 13 February 2022 18:19 (two years ago) link

Gonna have to give this one a few more spins, but at first blush although every track sounds great while it’s on, there isn’t much here that’s hooking me. Then again, I had the same experience with Transference, which then became one of my favourites.

Alfred, this is great stuff:

Their preppy sternness and the intermittent submission to supervised anarchy—so much depends on the erotic allure of Daniel’s six-string squalls, manipulated with the ease of a casanova who has calculated the impact of a messy kiss.

aw, thanks

you could always (gasp) buy the record

I went to their show just this week and it wasn't cheap as pre covid tickets were. Plus I don't buy CD's anymore

Bee OK, Sunday, 13 February 2022 23:21 (two years ago) link

Where is that Alfred quote from?

Bee OK, it's from this review: https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/spoon-lucifer-on-the-sofa/

I dunno, I listened to "On The Radio" twice a few days ago and it's been in my head ever since. I agree the melodies aren't as strong on some others, but I also think those might be my favorite songs on the record ("Astral Jacket," title track)

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 14 February 2022 14:07 (two years ago) link

On The Radio jacks the riff from ZZ Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man”, so of course it’s catchy! :P

xxxxxp I mentioned this last fall (and will probably try this again with Spoon) but most of the GA shows here in NYC don't seem to be selling out, especially when they're in bigger venues. I think a lot of this has to do with concerns over COVID, first Delta and now Omicron. So with every GA show I've been to, I've been able to get GA tickets for half of the ticket price (i.e. less than half of the total price when you factor in the original ticket fees) usually two or three days in advance on the secondhand market. The downside is I'm never close to the stage, no way I'm packing myself into the crowd, but it's made for some very cheap shows - I went to see Bob Mould for $15. Spoon is $50 before fees here in NYC, so I'll probably go if it drops to $25.

birdistheword, Monday, 14 February 2022 19:46 (two years ago) link

This band has amassed one heck of a body of work that's remarkably consistent without necessarily being repetitive.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 14 February 2022 23:05 (two years ago) link

This is a great record. Wild and My Babe are knocking me out.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 15 February 2022 06:57 (two years ago) link

They churn out golden tunes out with so much ease. MY BABE

bonus donut (rizzx), Tuesday, 15 February 2022 08:43 (two years ago) link

after repeated listenings, finding this album tiring and annoying
too much rockin for me i guess

sean gramophone, Tuesday, 15 February 2022 14:29 (two years ago) link

"my babe" and the astral song are pretty good though

sean gramophone, Tuesday, 15 February 2022 14:30 (two years ago) link

Maybe you're not rockin enough, have you considered that? Or maybe you're rockin too much - in a rocking chair!

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 February 2022 14:32 (two years ago) link

not much of a surprise but this album is incredibly well-recorded

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 15 February 2022 16:08 (two years ago) link

put it on yesterday, i was like yeah yeah another spoon album, no rush. of course i've already played most of it 3 times. they just never miss.

The last couple didn’t massively connect with me - I enjoyed them a bit but didn’t adore them like the run from KTM through Transference - but this is absolutely back up there for me.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 17 February 2022 06:37 (two years ago) link

Been listening to this a lot lately and I think I've finally decided that, despite a few decent tracks and the excellent production we've come to expect from these guys, it's almost definitely my least favorite Spoon album. I'm also baffled by the sequencing. Title track is great, though.

Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 19 February 2022 14:48 (two years ago) link

Yeah not their best, but still a solid album which isn’t a surprise coming from them at this point even after so many years into their career.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 21 February 2022 01:26 (two years ago) link

“Wild” is probably their most immediate single in ages.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 21 February 2022 01:41 (two years ago) link

i bought this CD and got it today, can't wait to finally hear this album

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 18:45 (two years ago) link

ironically, i think the last CD i bought was Hot Thoughts and that was at their show

Bee OK, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 18:46 (two years ago) link

Bee OK, what did you think of the new one?

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 25 February 2022 13:05 (two years ago) link

Miss this but was able to give it a good five listens. Another very solid Spoon album as they just have a knack for that. I can't really think of too many bands that have this good of an album for album number 10. It seems like everything is in the right place and the production is outstanding. I'm a big fan of the second half and do wonder where this album will rank in a years time on my Spoon list. I'm a little disappointed they didn't keep going down the electronic direction of their last album but I might be over ranking Hot Thoughts. This album does rock but seems a bit short, I actually think they should have put one more song on it. For Spoon fans I can see why they think it is a return to form as it does feel like a classic Spoon album and to do that in 2022 is remarkable imo.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 2 March 2022 18:25 (two years ago) link

I love Hot Thoughts and prefer it.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 2 March 2022 18:27 (two years ago) link

Have played this ten times, is that enough to decide that aside from Wild it really isn't doing anything for me?

ledge, Friday, 11 March 2022 09:23 (two years ago) link

It's the first Spoon album I'll probably never listen to again. On the whole I think it's pretty disappointing, which is the first time I have felt that way about a Spoon album. "Held" is actually pretty awful. Sounds like the Black Keys.

As for the length, it doesn't bother me, as I like short albums, bu they could have padded this out with one of the great live Tom Petty covers they released in video form last year.

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 11 March 2022 10:05 (two years ago) link

same

sean gramophone, Friday, 11 March 2022 15:01 (two years ago) link

Yeah "Held" could be their worst song ever (cover or not, terrible lyrics too), and "The Hardest Cut" isn't much better, but after that I really like the album. Not as good as Hot Thoughts though.

paulhw, Friday, 11 March 2022 15:25 (two years ago) link

It also seems like an almost vulgar misread of the original song (which I only heard recently), with all the conspicuous rock and roll vocal affectations ("I let myself be held / (yeah) / Like a big old baby / whoo!"). And to start the record that way? Baffling decision.

I still think the title track's great, which is why I'll probably keep the record.

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 11 March 2022 17:33 (two years ago) link

two weeks pass...

This has to be the least talked about new Spoon album ever on ILM. I see they are now going to co-headline a tour with Interpol this summer but there are no Los Angeles dates as of yet.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2022 22:29 (two years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Is anyone going to see Spoon on this current tour that just started? I'm thinking about going again because they are so good live.

Bee OK, Friday, 15 April 2022 01:36 (two years ago) link

i saw them last week in boston

call all destroyer, Friday, 15 April 2022 01:42 (two years ago) link

This might be their worst album outside of their debut. There is no lasting power with this and although good it's subpar when you compare it to other Spoon albums. Hot Thoughts and They Want My Soul are so good maybe that should have been expected.

Bee OK, Friday, 15 April 2022 01:43 (two years ago) link

how was the show?

xpost?

Bee OK, Friday, 15 April 2022 01:43 (two years ago) link

I read someone's tweet that they're doing John Lennon's "Isolation" as one of the encores

curmudgeon, Friday, 15 April 2022 02:51 (two years ago) link

they were covering that years ago, brought it back for obvious reasons

call all destroyer, Friday, 15 April 2022 03:06 (two years ago) link

They just postponed the next few shows because someone got COVID, so if that frees up a ticket, I may go.

birdistheword, Friday, 15 April 2022 05:07 (two years ago) link

I haven’t gone back to this much, honestly.

(It’d be fun to see them live, though.)

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 15 April 2022 14:29 (two years ago) link

Nor have I.
