lol @ this title. I have been telling myself I need to listen to the new Tagaq since it came out, maybe this will give me the push I need to get round to it.

Mentioned on the albums poll thread that this is p much the only 2022 album I've spent any time with, think it fits here: Beast Nest - Sicko

I kind of think we should strive to keep this thread somewhat silo'd from twenty-something RYM/internet stuff like hyperpop, hypnagogic pop, hexD, vaporwave, dungeon synth, cloud rap, nightcore, black midi, future funk, dariacore, seapunk, blown out anime voices, broken transmission etc, but appreciate the enthusiasm loujag

Yeah, I'm actually in favour of separating non-notated EA/musique concrète and sound art out of "classical" (not that it appears in that thread much anyway) and free improv out of "jazz", and good with separating brickwalled Ke$hacore (a couple of songs of which I've enjoyed) into its own category.

A few things from Epic Games Friday:

This split tape from Sullow/The Silver Field is really cool, Sullow is psychedelic banjo Henry Flynt hillbilly vibes with some wild improv drumming, The Silver Field reminds me a bit of Current 93 but more chill and not as annoying, really sick tbh, been listening to it non-stop.

This record is really something else.

https://matchess.bandcamp.com/album/sonescent

It reads like hyperbole, but it is doing a lot of interesting work psychoacoustically— hi-pitched sine waves will emerge from nostalgic folk-pop into muffled fiddling...Like how Basic Channel was doing "a basement techno club from several blocks away," this is like "someone fiddling with synthesis while a band practices next door and also the dumpster is being unloaded outside the window." Really neat.

some recent stuff i've enjoyed

https://bogdanraczynski.bandcamp.com/album/addle
"Marking a change from the high-octane jungle tekno braindance for which he is most commonly known, here we find the Polish American musician in a more melodic and zen-like place of peace, which is ergonomic and decluttered, whilst also bittersweet and tinged with melancholy."

https://intlanthem.bandcamp.com/album/recordings-from-the-land-islands
interesting story behind this on the page, the final track is absolutely stunning

I don't know if I really get this thread's remit, but the new Rachika Nayar is impressive. I like it a lot more than her previous album. The way it bursts into ravey technicolor at times never fails to delight (though it might be alienating if all you want is Grouper-y banks of melancholic guitar fog), and in general this sounds like a big step up in ambition and achievement to me

Some Bandcamp stuff

- New two-song single from ---__--___, 'Divine Berth'
If you liked last year's 'The Heart Pumps Kool-Aid,' this is the same sort of thing— "new" classical vibes with auto-tuned vocals, very unsettling and great. https://sethgraham.bandcamp.com/album/divine-berth

- A record from Baum Sae, 'Communication'
from the release page: "Baum Sae is a collaborative project between drummer Soojin Suh, and traditional vocalist Borim Kim combined with Gina Hwang on Geomungo, a traditional Korean plucked instrument. Together they formed a new project "Baum Sae" (translation: Night Birds) in 2020, combining traditional Korean musical elements with group improvisations and original compositions." https://soojinsuh.bandcamp.com/album/communication

- lilien rosarian, 'every flower in my garden'
tape manipulation, radio interference, bells, very beautiful hazy music with some occasional moments of "whoa" mindfuck https://lilienrosarian.bandcamp.com/album/every-flower-in-my-garden

- Nick Storring, 'Music from Wéi'
Solo piano, very beautiful and unexpectedly strange— goes from sounding like soundtrack music to sounding like Morton Feldman. Great.
