Won my first championship today, whoooooohoooooooooo!

Nhex, Thursday, 23 July 2009 02:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Jeff, I looked into what you said about Ranked and I think I was unclear, I didn't just mean those one-round games, I meant in general the nature of doing a single match (best of 3, or 5) and then dropping that opponent completely. But now I may be changing my initial dislike of Ranked - I can quickly get tired of trying to find good matches in Player Match. Partially because it's not fun to beat on complete noobs (and we're generally not gonna play more than 2 or 3 matches anyway) and it takes so long to find players with higher level icons/titles... it feels like 4 out of 5 or higher would fit in that category in PM. Ranked is just slightly better in that regard. The appeal of just getting quick in/out matches gains the more I tire of the limited search system.

Championship Mode definitely has good competition though (at least past the first round, I'm still in G3), I see myself playing that a lot more in the future. The problem that none of these modes can really solve, naturally, is that the selection of characters used generally (probably 50-75%) comes down to Ryu, Ken, Akuma, and Sagat. Also see some Boxer, Guile and Honda, most likely keyboard users liking charge chars. I still like Player Matches since players are far more willing to experiment and just have fun games... well, hopefully in a month or two, the general skill level and character base increases. I definitely appreciate, in any case, the good number of new SF players coming in.

(I know this is probably all old news to you guys, but maybe there's some others lurking here who also just got SF IV and are thinking similar things) Huh, I think I see design-wise what they were going for with the netplay system. Instead of the quarter match idea used in HDR (I assume the two teams were developing independently and that's why they didn't seem to share any concepts or netcode b/w the games) they want people to just play Arcade Mode while waiting for other players to join in. It is by far the easiest way to get matches, and much more passive - pretty sure it was set by default to get Ranked Matches in Arcade Mode when I installed it.

That's no excuse for making such a half-assed search system with no real multiplayer/multigame lobbies or even text chat, but it's less stressful to beat on the CPU for a round or two while waiting for a new match (vs. constantly refreshing the search screen or sitting impatiently in your hosted game lobby). If they're going to avoid lobbies again for the next SF IV (let's hope not) they should let you do Training mode (or Challenge mode, or anything) while waiting for new matches, not just Arcade. The open fight request idea basically is a decent one, since you can turn it off and on as you want. Of course the caveat is - I've unlocked Seth already so I don't have much reason to go back into Arcade Mode except to be a lazy bum about matchmaking - if I didn't it would be certain I'd never make it to the end of an arcade run with Fight Requests on!

Oh yeah, and I got accused of using a Game Genie today online. That was hilarious.

On that note, wow, lag switches! Once a legend, it is real.... Beating this Akuma with Dan in Championship Mode, and in the first round, no noticeable lag. All of a sudden in the second round curious lag spikes start happening. It wasn't even subtle, the game would slow down to a crawl, then suddenly speed up again when my opponent was safely away from my jump... over and over again for the next two rounds. Should I even bother reporting it? Too bad it's basically impossible to prove this sort of thing (and I guess there's a chance he wasn't doing it on purpose, but it was VERY suspicious).

$20 for PS3 or 360 at Gamestops in the US for the next week!

Not to be a downer, but there is the rumor that the next SF IV retail release is about to be announced in a couple weeks, perhaps at SBO, coinciding with this sudden sale just a couple weeks after the major price drop to $40. Still, it's $20, not much to lose!

the marn set is the highlight

marn has only been playing viper for three weeks, and is just back from japan where he played at big box for two weeks (along w/nemo/daigo/mago etc) and I think he now has by far the best us viper. better than (sbo qualified) combofiend imo

read ur post, phoned a somnambulance (cozwn), Wednesday, 29 July 2009 23:05 (fourteen years ago) link

thumbs down "ydjk", thumbs up "mango sentinel"

Viper is just so SNK, I don't quite get her rhythm; should play her some more. That Marn set was pretty good. Gootecks one was pretty boring. Philly One got beat pretty solidly but it's cool to see a good Cammy.

Nhex, Friday, 31 July 2009 16:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Made it into G2 last night - also realized it's probably not healthy to even try to make it into G1, just looking at the required points... since I've been playing on and off the last few weeks I think a good chunk of players had already moved up to G2. At least, I started facing a ton of Kens and Ryus again.

For all the joking about flowchart Kens above, the ones that really annoy me are flowchart Balrogs and especially flowchart Ryus...

Any generic tips for fighting Bison players? I feel like I have no idea what that match up is about, in terms of breaking through the turtle/head stomp/jab-jab-jab/scissor kick deal.. (Blanka, similarly)

Nhex, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 13:31 (fourteen years ago) link

who are you using?

generic tips:
- jump back fierce or jump back medium kick normally deal w/head stomp
- see headstop, walk forward/back and combo when he lands
- you can focus the extension of HS and devil's reverse but be wary of EX devil's reverse which hits twice
- at full screen work your way in slowly, scissors come out fast and his st.HK is like a wall if you try and jump from certain distances
- inside two chars distance he is a sitting duck cos he has no good anti-air at that range except EX HS
- bison's like to put out jabs and shorts when up close (ppl online don't like to block, they like to press buttons), use this to your advantage and counter-hit with a move w/fast or invincible start-up, e.g. ex messiah kick

cozwn, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 14:01 (fourteen years ago) link

also, always pressure on knockdown cos he has no great reversals exc. EX HS

cozwn, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 14:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Nowadays I generally play Rose, who has a pretty bad wakeup game herself (and her fireballs and normals are generally too slow against Bison's stomp and shorts) but I often have problems even using other characters, especially with the lag punishment with scissor kick blocking and medium spacing vs. the close range shorts/jabs. Also EX scissors is a decent reversal, I think...

Does the flaming fist from Devil's Reverse break through FAs? I definitely need to do the walk forward/backward to punish headstomp more often, at least, often forget about that (though this is too, often protected by that jabbing online).

"I have seen bloodstains on the Pac Man joystick" (jamescobo), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 18:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I finally downloaded this off Steam after having purchased it for $20 a couple weekends ago. This is the first time I've bought a new Street Fighter game since I ended up getting a SNES years ago when SF2 was released. I've quickly figured out how much I suck!

So is Seth basically the most annoying final character, or what?

mh, Monday, 21 September 2009 15:36 (fourteen years ago) link

new one is coming

cozwn, Monday, 21 September 2009 15:46 (fourteen years ago) link

some 2001-registered dude on SRK posted a now-deleted thread saying they're going to add 10 new characters in SFIV: Dash and they'll announce it at or slightly after TGS:

SF3: makoto, ibuki, dudley
SF2: deejay, t hawk
Alpha: cody, guy, adon

... and then two brand new characters.

cozwn, Monday, 21 September 2009 15:48 (fourteen years ago) link

the console sf4 has a ton of characters already, it's hard to say if more will improve the game.

adon, deejay, dudley: yay! (dudley was hinted on twitter i think)
t hawk: why? (not a surprise, I know they found some of his code in the first sf4, but still)

abanana, Monday, 21 September 2009 16:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Ibuki is enhhh but I will pay lots of money for Adon if that is true; it is imperative they get whatever shrieking lunatic did his voice work in SFA though.

Eugene Sander-Rygar (MPx4A), Monday, 21 September 2009 16:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Seth is a huge pain at first but once you realize his patterns he's pretty beatable -- gotta block every time except for the few openings where you can jump in/sweep/go in for a combo. He is basically a weaker version of Gill from SF3, even looking basically the same and having a lot of his moves (now THAT dude was a pain in the ass). Then again it might just seem this way in retrospect after having to beat him 25 damn times to unlock Seth.

Does the thread deletion imply the information was true or is it more likely because he didn't post it in the general SF IV: Dash predictions thread, or some SRK forum junk like that? If they actually do add ten characters, I hope they have the guts to remove some of the WW/CE characters and give the mid/low-tier characters better movesets. Frankly, I want to see NEW characters, anyway.

Nhex, Monday, 21 September 2009 16:28 (fourteen years ago) link

from iplaywinner.com:

I'll be honest, I've been pretty tight lipped about what I know when it comes to the next installment of Street Fighter IV, but these new rumors popped up today on NeoGAF via the Capcom Unity forums. This is the first I've heard of any of these new additions to the game, so who knows if its all true. Most of it doesn't seem that far fetched though considering what we already know.

Check it out:

Another rumors and info from other SFIV forums according to Ultima:

- Guile has Sonic Hurricane

- Everyone has two Ultras at once. No selection. Commands don't overlap.

- One super, two ultras. Except Sakura, who has Shinkuu Hadoken back for 2 and 2. All 3S characters have all three of their supers, except one is super and two are ultra.

- Rufus can cancel-break the last hit of Spectacle Romance, or the launch kick of Space Opera Symphony.

- Guy has his chains

- Dudley now has ten target combos, up from nine in 3S.

- Cody is the only character with an Alpha Counter. Yes, he has the knife.

- Makoto has her super as Tanden Renki. May be possible to activate with an Ultra charged to commence the rape time.

- Gen gets a new air Ultra. He still doesn't hagve his chains back at this point.

- Juri's top may bear a vague resemblance to Shiki, with a bit of Hinata hair.

- Expect the return of the many familiar supers, and a few new ones like Metsu
Shoryuken. Return of Kikosho, Sonic Hurricane, Denjin(Gouken), Tiger Cannon.

- Expect sick names like Breathless, Yoga Shangri-La, Psycho Punisher and Demon Armageddon.

- Expect a lot of air activated ultras, i.e; Siberian Blizzard, Gief's ****ing air 720. Yes, you read that correctly.

- Return of the bonus stage."

More than that, here is a separate forum post with some similar information. I'd say it's safe to say that we can at least expect two ultras and one super in the next installment of the game.

All rumoured returners from ST(DJ,Hawk), Alpha(Final Fighters, Adon) and 3S(Dud, Mak, Ibu) are true.

Everyone has 2 Ultras.

Hakan - arabic grappler obsessed with oil.
Juri - evil asian girl fighter working for Seth.

some ppl have played this updated version and one was quoted as saying "It doesn't play anything like IV currently does."

Announcement should be made at TGS and the Japanese SF4 blog later this week.

Also, they're calling it SSF4.

believe me or not, but mark this post for tomorrow/late tonight.

Update on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 10:44AM by haunts
Fubarduck on NeoGAF is claiming virtually everything that has been stated is true. If you don't know who Fubarduck is, I will say that if there was ever a credible source, he's the one.

Hopefully we will see images and/or video later today at TGS!

Update on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 10:52AM by haunts
...more details from NeoGAF:

Dudley has new chains (10, up one from 3s).

Cody's knife and such are in. My source seems to think one of his Ultras requires his knife to be in hand.

Update on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 11:06AM by haunts
More details from Fubarduck -

Apparently the new game engine feature is called "Tadan Saving" (多段セービング) in Japanese which implies a multi-hitting or multiple-level focus attack.

Be interesting to see how much of this post was true and how much of it was bullshit a few months from now. I'm leaning more towards the latter, skeptical that Capcom would bounce back so far towards hardcore gameplay.

If the Super Street Fighter IV news is true, and it seems like at least the gist of it is, I'm guessing it will come out in arcades first, maybe in early 2010? Then come to consoles in the summer/fall?
