Lashley’s gear is atrocious. All white with a big black penis strip? It’s really distracting.

It must have been 15 minutes between the last match ending and this one starting, I’m glad I’m not watching this live. It’s started like the Shield match, big moves and no selling. Lashley went through a barrier at speed and was back up with ease. How do the Cornette stans not aim their hatred in this direction? After the 4th or 5th suplex, which I guess Lesnar is still doing since that match with Cena in 2014, Lashley is finally selling.

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 30 January 2022 13:48 (two years ago) link

Seeing Lashley put his finisher submission on Lesnar is hilarious. Brock is much bigger and you can tell he can’t get it on him properly, but they are acting like it’s deathly.

For some reason Reigns has just speared Lesnar. who in the hell buys a Roman reigns “Needle Mover” T-shirt and wears that outside? Also I always feel sorry for a guy winning a title and being the 4th most important person in a match.

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 30 January 2022 13:53 (two years ago) link

Absolutely never watch Miz and maryese v edge and Beth.

Nakamura is the intercontinental champion? Good for him. Excited for him v AJ to start.

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 30 January 2022 13:56 (two years ago) link

“John Knoxville”!

That was pleasant. Hope it doesn’t make the movie though. No one even tried to suplex Preston Lacy. Nak and Sami have gone and no one seems particularly interesting left. Do people like Priest? Ah Giant Gonzalez has come in, who could possibly eliminate him?

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 30 January 2022 14:12 (two years ago) link

Ricochet kinda got a pop! Are they finally doing something with him? Gable doing something interesting too!

Kinda sad Omos didn’t win tbh. Also still lol Dom Mysterio. Why did they never give this kid a mask? He looks like such a dweeb.

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 30 January 2022 14:17 (two years ago) link

Happy Corbin???

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 30 January 2022 14:17 (two years ago) link

Bloody hell every seems like mid 90s jobbers so much that I didn’t even notice Ziggler was in it until a guy whose personality is a moustache nearly threw him out. And now AJ was eliminated by Happy Corbin’s “court jester”

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 30 January 2022 14:25 (two years ago) link

Now Matt Riddle comes down on a scooter and is over? This is embarrassing. Possibly the worst set of people ever in a rumble ring together. Soz Sheamus.

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 30 January 2022 14:27 (two years ago) link

Bad Bunny is more over than any other entrant. He’s basically been the first interesting thing to happen too.

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 30 January 2022 14:39 (two years ago) link

Ok Shane came out and is sweating bullets and gassed so quickly that Yokozuna is embarrassed. Surprised Yoko is the old wrestler I think of the most watching this.

Randy in 2022 has got the biggest pop of the night. Randy! Is this because he can’t fight Cena anymore?

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 30 January 2022 14:43 (two years ago) link

Fucking hell Shane needs to give this up. Remember when Iron Sheik had to win the wrestle mania battle royal cos he couldn’t go over the ropes?

The winner seems like a complete sham but honestly none of the other choices seemed like a good pick either. Possibly the worst Rumble I’ve ever watched.

I don’t want to hate WWE. I mean I despise Vince and Linda and the firings and their politics etc, but I still want to be entertained by this company that hire a bunch of people I like to do a thing I love to watch. But that was just a complete waste of time. Nothing really happened, and when it did, it was just impossible to care. Michael Cole is still a terrible announcer. No one is over. The women’s rumble keeps having the same surprise guests every year, because they keep firing everyone. Everyone in the men’s is a no hoper, for the same reason. Joe, Bray, Keith Lee etc would have made this so much better than someone who had a moustache or a court jester lackey. I’d guess half the entrants were tag teams, and there has never been a hope in hell for any tag team to win it in any Rumble ever.

I watched the Belair Sasha match at WM last year cos a friend told me too and couldn’t be bothered with the rest. Unless someone tells me something special happens, I think I’ll skip it again, basically 3rd or 4th year in a row. I cannot imagine caring about Lesnar v Reigns Pt 20937

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 30 January 2022 14:56 (two years ago) link

It’s been a whole day and I’ve been stewing on how boring this show to the point where I’m just angry now. What a terrible show by a terrible company. They deserve to go under, lose their tv deals etc

Just pure sewage.

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 30 January 2022 22:53 (two years ago) link

My friend brought up a good point about Shane and said that he was probably an emergency choice, in case someone they had planned to have tested positive or ended up not being able to participate. I love Shane, but it would explain why he didn't look that good in the whole thing. At the start of the show, I had no idea who I thought was going to win the Men's Rumble. Then, once Lesnar lost, it became clear to me that one of the 5 unannounced spots would go to him. As far as the Women's Rumble, I had heard earlier that day that Rousey might be coming back, and I hoped it wasn't true, because I wanted Rhea to get her chance or for Asuka to return, and I got neither hahahha.

Another year where the Women's Rumble was better than the Men's, though unfortunately not by much. I wish they didn't announce SO MANY of the entrants. The whole thrill is the surprise. With such little space for surprise, it really suffered, I felt. The biggest surprise, to me, was Right to Censor Ivory, which was great for all 20 seconds she lasted. Sarah Logan's reunion with Liv was cute, and Cameron's appearance will hopefully lead to more for Naomi, who I love, and who had the closest thing to a Kofi spot, since poor Kofi didn't land it this year.

hourspass, Monday, 31 January 2022 18:52 (two years ago) link

Didn’t watch the show and not seen the spot but Kofi blowing his annual spectacular escape feels apposite. The fans don’t even get that meagre sliver of traditional fun anymore.

Windsor Davies, Monday, 31 January 2022 19:00 (two years ago) link

Oh man, I'm sorry! I should have hid it behind a spoiler tag! You could definitely feel the energy decline very sharply from that point on. The fastest elimination in the Men's, second overall, after Molly Holly's 20 seconds.

hourspass, Monday, 31 January 2022 19:11 (two years ago) link

lol no no you did nothing wrong! i already knew about it and i'm certainly not intending to watch the show! sounds as though they don't even know how to lay out a Rumble match anymore (and even that had gotten noticeably worse since Pat Patterson checked out)

Windsor Davies, Monday, 31 January 2022 19:43 (two years ago) link

Shane being an emergency choice would make sense if Cesar wasn’t liking every tweet asking wtf he was. Or any nxt guy etc.

I’m surprised I’ve not seen anyone else talk about how shit he looked, maybe because he still gets a pop. He looked like he was going to have a heart attack.

The Kofi spot was just sad. It definitely took the wind out of the sail.

I didn’t know while watching that the WM pointing sign set on fire twice and they had to evacuate fans. What an omen.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 31 January 2022 20:03 (two years ago) link

ah dude it cannot possibly be a surprise to you at this stage to discover that the people steering this ship see more value in Shane than they do in Cesaro - it's been 10 years since Cesaro debuted!

how long can you possibly keep waiting for the necrotic senile billionaire to suddenly discover that actually he was wrong all along and he should've been promoting the many, many good wrestlers on his books rather than doing whatever the hell it is he think he's been doing?

it's one thing to watch the bonfire and enjoy it on its own terms but if all you're gonna do is check back in for Rumble-Mania season each year and freak out about how much worse WWE has gotten since the last time you checked, do what every other sensible wrestling fan has done and check out for good. there's nothing here worth saving and it's never gonna change now. and even if it did magically improve the people who eventually really benefit from your attention as a consumer would still be the dregs of humanity so why even keep hoping?

Windsor Davies, Monday, 31 January 2022 22:12 (two years ago) link

gonna peace out of this thread because i have nothing constructive to contribute and i hate it when ppl on ILX drop into a thread solely to bring negativity into an environment where ppl are posting enthusiastically as fans of a particular thing (although i would note that a hoy hoy in particular doesn't seem to have been particularly enthusiastic about this weekend's Rumble, at least).

if you're not enjoying what they're selling then forget about this bullshit company and forget about the Rumble and forget about Wrestlemania season and all of the other things that keeps long time fans coming back year after yeqr. fuck them and their terrible, terrible output and their insulting vision of what wrestling is supposed to be. there's no need to keep coming back to this poisoned well in a world where AEW exists.

Windsor Davies, Monday, 31 January 2022 22:19 (two years ago) link

(other than to point & laugh / take a detached interest in the fall of the empire, ofc)

Windsor Davies, Monday, 31 January 2022 22:23 (two years ago) link

Ah occasionally you gotta hear some bollocks on the radio to remember what makes good records great. And sometimes you have to see the wrestle mania sign literally on fire while a sexy flanders they seriously named ‘boogs’ is the best performer on the show to appreciate that Cody did the moustache better many years before co-founding something sooooo much better for us all.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 31 January 2022 23:26 (two years ago) link

Never had “Pat McAfee will accidentally kill Vince McMahon at Wrestlemania” on my bingo card

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 27 February 2022 15:14 (two years ago) link

I would be surprised if Vince wrestles for himself. The rumor I heard was that this is where Austin Theory steps up as Vince's boy and is his rep for this fight. Not the dude I would have chosen, but I guess they see something in him.

hourspass, Friday, 4 March 2022 22:51 (two years ago) link

tried to watch the MacAfee / McMahon interview out of morbid curiosity just to see what Vince has to say for himself these days. had to ditch it after 10 mins or so of of relentless, sickening McAfee "so, in this business of wrestling which we're all privileged to be in (which simply didn't exist until you descended from the heavens in January 1984 and magicked this industry into existence with your extraordinary business savvy and willpower and genius and your massive massive balls"

i guess it was interesting to see a true narcissist up close this. Vince made a point of talking about how he hated all the hagiography and the bootlicking, and he very deliberately rolled his eyes whenever McAfee said "you, sir, are a legend in your own lifetime" in so many words. while still of course tacitly acknowledging that all of that shit spouted by McAfee was essentially true, Vince was simply too humble to acknowledge it.

Windsor Davies, Friday, 4 March 2022 23:29 (two years ago) link

doesn't even matter whether Austin wrestles at this point. presumably he's not, cause if he is then why wouldn't they have announced it weeks ago and promoted the shit out of it? but even if he does have one more match, how does it help them in the long run? it'll just be another tarnished legacy, another bad Wrestlemania match in a decade + of bad Wrestlemania matches. and that wouls truly be it for them. the final frontier. it's their last ace in the hole, the one truly massive drawing card which no one ever thought they would be able to use, and once they do it, they've done it, and there's nothing bigger they can offer the fans to trade on the old nostalgia. and at this stage it doesn't even feel like it would generate that much interest

Windsor Davies, Friday, 4 March 2022 23:35 (two years ago) link

I think that what has given some people hope are the returns that we've seen in the past few years. Both Edge and Daniel Bryan had to retire due to injuries, and now both are back. Goldberg had a few returns, as well, and up until a few years ago, The Undertaker kept coming back. The nostalgia is always so alluring to WWE/wrestling fans in general, so I definitely think that there would be some interest...however, I don't think that it should happen. The last thing we need is to have Austin look like how Goldberg has looked in some of his return. Hell, even Edge has lost a little bit of shine for me, and I feel bad, but he just simply cannot move the way he used to.

Anyway, I heard MSG was an interesting show, even though people felt it seriously underdelivered in certain areas.

i havent actually watched any of this because the idea of giving money to these ghouls

with that said, looks from Twitter vids as though the crowd was hot and everyone, fans and performers, was having lots of fun, so that's a huge step up from the last few years

otoh by doing the Stone Cold comeback and having him & Vince do the thing, they've burned the last and biggest nostalgia pop they had

next year for the Roman / Rock Hollywood showdown and then there's nowhere left to go

Yeah, I feel weird about how they actually televise those sorts of matches. You would think that they would tighten all of that up before letting them go in front of a live crowd.

Also, devastated by this latest batch of NXT releases, but I'm happy for those who didn't want to re-sign. These two hurt me the most, though. Love them so much.

None of this is surprising of course. Vince McMahon and his various cronies have always been a gang of rapey creeps and it’s amazing that it’s taken this long for them to even brush up against metoo in a meaningful way

Windsor Davies, Thursday, 16 June 2022 14:27 (one year ago) link

Sasha Banks released. cross one more off the list of the half dozen people on the WWE roster i still remotely care about or have any interest in

i wonder if she'll turn up in AEW or if she's gonna devote her attention to acting

never understood why they didn't bet the house on her, she's incredible. Bayley vs Banks summer 2015 was a big deal for me personally, that was the first women's match i remember seeing in the moment (as opposed to the odd 90s Joshi thing) where in the moment i was just totally blown away

tempering expectations

1. vince might still be running things from the shadows
2. even when kevin dunn gets fired they probably aren't going to abandon the overall garish eye-vomit presentation of the main roster
3. last time trips tried to run a promotion for actual tv ratings it kind of sucked

Very interesting to see the sort of revitalization of this company under the Hunter (Hearst) Helm(sley). Not sure if it is so spectacular now or if it's been so disappointing for a while that even small changes feel like a big deal.

hourspass, Tuesday, 18 October 2022 23:25 (one year ago) link

From what I hear, Sami’s rise as a lovable clown is going very well. The rest just seems like an ongoing roster shakeup, with a million people returning (the good brothers? Seriously? These guys are 2022s x Pac heat)

I still can’t take the place too seriously though. If Sami is being built like this, it’s a real damn shame to know they can’t do anything with him, as they have the rock pencilled in to defeat reigns/bloodline. So it just makes Zayn look like a geek, instead of getting the DBry/Kofi WM treatment.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 19 October 2022 06:34 (one year ago) link

I've always been a huge Sami Zayn mark, so I'm glad that he's getting more time to shine, but totally know that this won't go much further than what it already is. Man is just so good that he makes anything they give him work.
