overall the Discogs effect has driven prices way down on a far greater number of releases

yeah, one thing influencing the narrative of "discogs makes all records expensive!! :(" is confirmation bias- people look at records that are in demand at the moment and rising in price, and ignore the many, many records that have fallen in price. i also think that many sellers don't bother to list $1-2 records online. much easier to sell them in store, at a fair, or whatever.

one time gaffled 'em up (one time), Saturday, 29 January 2022 21:37 (two years ago) link

I've been offloading lots of CDs and am wondering if there's any point listing CDs that might sell for 99p if I'm lucky. by the time the fees are paid I'm walking to the post office for 60p. But then I don't want to just chuck them in a skip. At the moment my rule is if it won't sell for 50p it goes to a charity shop.

I keep seeing that Continuing with CDs thread pop up but I think I've come to the conclusion there is no point hanging onto my CDs any more, I never listen to them and they are all ripped to FLAC and I've even scanned the booklets in case I ever want to read them.

what about a hard drive crash? do you have offsite backup?

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Saturday, 29 January 2022 21:54 (two years ago) link

a lot of dealers are listing things at "hail mary" prices not "actually trying to sell this" prices

i think this is a big factor- discogs enables anyone to list their records, not just professional dealers. a seller who's got overhead and relying on income from sales has to keep inventory turning over. for anyone else who happens to have an in-demand record, why not list it at a crazy price, leave it up for months and see if anyone bites?

one time gaffled 'em up (one time), Saturday, 29 January 2022 21:55 (two years ago) link

xp I have them backed up on a RAID array and burnt to Bluray so yes

even the birds in the trees seemed to whisper "get fucked" (bovarism), Saturday, 29 January 2022 21:58 (two years ago) link

ok it's not offsite. but if my flat burns down then the CDs would also burn. and I could just download them all off Soulseek if that happens

even the birds in the trees seemed to whisper "get fucked" (bovarism), Saturday, 29 January 2022 21:59 (two years ago) link

they have FLACs on SLSK? (just teasing, mostly)

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Saturday, 29 January 2022 22:09 (two years ago) link

I'm not one to talk, my offsite backup failed and I need to make a new one

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Saturday, 29 January 2022 22:10 (two years ago) link

xp yes they do! maybe not all 2000+ CDs tbf

even the birds in the trees seemed to whisper "get fucked" (bovarism), Saturday, 29 January 2022 22:16 (two years ago) link

have only listed 650 CDs so far though

sold a few for over £10 each in the 3 weeks I've been doing this so it's not a total waste of time. turns out CDs of 80s hardcore bands are in demand

even the birds in the trees seemed to whisper "get fucked" (bovarism), Saturday, 29 January 2022 22:18 (two years ago) link

have noticed the Discogs flag for "this is too expensive" is pretty shit and should probably be ignored. listed 2 CDs which got flagged as too expensive (they were £3.99 each) and they both sold within a few days of listing. am happy with that price because that's about what I paid for them and just want to be shot of them anyway

even the birds in the trees seemed to whisper "get fucked" (bovarism), Saturday, 29 January 2022 22:20 (two years ago) link

wait what? is that flag an app thing? I have never seen it.

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Saturday, 29 January 2022 22:22 (two years ago) link

oh wait it sounds like a seller flag when you list something? I have never sold, only bought.

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Saturday, 29 January 2022 22:23 (two years ago) link

yeah not when you actually list it - there is a suggested price when you list which is often wildly out, like obviously way too expensive, say £6 when there are 20 copies for sale for 99p. this bears no relation to the other flag, which is on your Inventory page which lists everything you have for sale - a little red triangle appears if they think the price is too high

even the birds in the trees seemed to whisper "get fucked" (bovarism), Saturday, 29 January 2022 22:24 (two years ago) link

so you can list something for less than they suggest which they then tell you is too expensive

even the birds in the trees seemed to whisper "get fucked" (bovarism), Saturday, 29 January 2022 22:25 (two years ago) link

The flag is on the 'inventory' page. It's not much use.

this shit sucks

https://www.discogs.com/sell/history/3011740

iirc this record was fairly available on their website for $19.99 up until like 2020

frogbs, Wednesday, 2 February 2022 04:49 (two years ago) link

So, buy your nanobots now.

war mice (hardcore dilettante), Wednesday, 2 February 2022 11:38 (two years ago) link

yeah that shit makes me nervous, so many times I've seen something cool come out only to be like "well I've already bought 5 records this week so whatever I'll grab it later" only to find that "later" it's sold out and 3-5x the price on the secondary market. I wonder if this is all just gonna crash soon or if this is just the way things are until supply can meet demand. Luckily you do occasionally find sellers who actually want to move stuff - I grabbed Join Us for $30 and I think it's because I was lucky enough to spot it within like 15 minutes of it going up. the seller probably didn't notice how there were basically no other copies for sale and forgot to jack the price way up.

So, buy your nanobots now.

for a while if you bought any vinyl on their website they'd throw in a copy of Nanobots for free, I guess they pressed way too many. great deal cuz it's one of my favorites of theirs

Had to file my first Seller Not Responding report today. I hadn't heard from them for 6 days after I paid, so I hit them up.

Me: Hi there, it's been a few days since my order. Any idea when you'll be able to ship?

Seller: Yes it took me a few days to find it, it’ll go out tomorrow

Me: Sweet! Thanks.

Seller (several hours later): Yes it took me a few days to find it, it’ll go out tomorrow

That was over a week ago and complete radio silence since then, despite a couple inquiries from me. Looked yesterday and the record is still listed as "For Sale" in their shop.

peace, man, Wednesday, 2 February 2022 14:55 (two years ago) link

Hmm, if the "order" is still current, it couldn't be in their "for sale" section, unless they had two copies. Or listed it twice (which I'm sure happens)

They are a haphazard flake, though, clearly.

Mark G, Wednesday, 2 February 2022 15:37 (two years ago) link

The order is marked payment received, but the copy they still have listed for sale has the same condition and comments about the condition as the one I'm trying to purchase. I'm pretty sure they only had one - it's an old record and a relatively small shop.

peace, man, Wednesday, 2 February 2022 15:53 (two years ago) link

Someone who speaks tech better than me can probably explain this but Discogs order pages have this weird quirk where if you leave the order page open after sending the message, and then for whatever reason that page is refreshed, it automatically resends your message. It's deeply annoying and has cause me to have to write quickly to explain why I just sent the same message twice.

fasmackhead, Wednesday, 2 February 2022 16:26 (two years ago) link

Ah, that might explain the duplicate message. Thanks

peace, man, Wednesday, 2 February 2022 16:38 (two years ago) link

Yeah part of the game as a buyer these days is nabbing albums sellers mindlessly price to match "median", even though the most recent sales are literally the "highest" figure due to lack of supply being a recent development. The best sellers are the ones that know this but are pricing fairly regardless.

Despite the absolute flakiness, the record arrived by Friday and was an accurately graded Very Good Plus, so I left positive feedback. ͡¯\(°_o)/¯

I want a record and the only copy I can find in the EU (I live in the UK) is two euros, and it'll cost ten more euros in postage and I'm fine with that, but I feel guilty getting someone to mail me a 2 euro record, but I don't want anything else they have and I don't want to risk getting fucked by import taxes. Am I being dumb?

There's A Goots In My House (stevie), Wednesday, 9 February 2022 15:04 (two years ago) link

I just emailed a guy in Spain about eight days after placing an order for a Loop 3CD set, and got no response to my actual message, but the day after I emailed him I finally got a ship notice. Shit like that always makes me wonder if the seller is just hoping the buyer won't notice that their item never turned up.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 9 February 2022 15:33 (two years ago) link

xpost

I think you should just get it. Sellers have the option to impose price minimums per order, so I'd assume they're fine with it if they haven't imposed one.

triggercut, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 15:36 (two years ago) link

when i was doing a lot of ebay selling in the past, there was one instance of me just outright forgetting to mark the item shipped. of course, the buyer reached out after a few days to inquire and i immediately went and adjusted it after getting their message. i'm sure it looked it sus on their end, but it was delivered a day or two later, so no big deal. it does happen.

something that's happened to me more than once as a buyer on discogs in the past few years is buying something, getting the usual notices (including a "shipped" notice!) and then having the seller reach out a few days later saying they can't locate the item. it's only happened a couple times and i've gotten a full refund in both cases, but it was just odd. doesn't me receiving a "shipped" notice mean that they paid the postage??!!?

Shipped could just mean that they've printed the postage out. That's become more common these days in all sorts of online ordering

it just means they bought the shipping label then couldn't find your high rise DVD when it came time to pack it up, that's happened to me as a seller.

adam, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 15:52 (two years ago) link

so they just had to eat that five bucks or whatever?

jeez, now i feel bad.

nah, you can get a refund on the label. it's just embarrassing to be like "i know i sold you this thing but i'm also very bad at knowing where stuff is, sorry."

adam, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 16:39 (two years ago) link

twice i found the item months later and messaged the original buyer and made a deal with an apologetic discount

I ordered the Crass "Best Before" "Crassical" edition from OLI, long time back.

I knew there'd been issues with this, and saw that a lot had been resolved. Still, taking it's time.

Anyway, i sent an email saying OK what's happening? (affably). I got an affable reply.

And, half an hour later, it arrived!

(I told the OLI person, he laffed too)

Is it from a Discogs seller? As long as they include the Discogs commercial receipt on the package with the UK VAT number visible and the customs form properly filled out there is very little chance of any further charges. Of course you never know how diligent any give random seller is going to be about that.

I encountered this today, via an email from “4AD Bandcamp Store” re: my copy of the new Big Thief CD :(

The updates have been rolled out to members with less than 1400 entries.
From a forum here are some images of the old v new cover layout that will no doubt be rolled out to the rest of the users before too long.

Dunno.

― Mark G, Tuesday, March 20, 2018 2:36 PM (three years ago) bookmarkflaglink

The issue is mainly for users who use the cover view. If you have more than 100 records, 3-4 records in a massive format just aren't practical. The old format worked fine for all.

Yeah, I used to use that view all the time, would print one "folder" then check off what was still there, what was sold and what should be added. One page of easy to see covers Vs three pages of unnecessary text (I know what album that is, etc)

Hope it's back soon.
