i almost never get double jeopardy but i knew this one. i actually thought “top 10 most populous countries” made it too easy

guy who beat her is pretty cute, his reaction to winning was hysterical. in a way amy being ousted by a gay librarian is a relief, could’ve been worse

flopson, Thursday, 27 January 2022 03:03 (two years ago) link

lol otm

i could see her mind racing trying to come up w the answer and slightly panicking as time ticked by

tourney of champs will be goood

johnny crunch, Thursday, 27 January 2022 03:07 (two years ago) link

as amy points out in that post-show video clip above, rhone did the one thing you absolutely have to do to beat a champion like her but that so few people are willing to do: max out your daily double bets.

and, yeah, his reaction was great.

i’m shocked she didn’t get final jeopardy, like flopson i almost never get them but i got that one pretty quickly. odd too because she had her two highest winning days in the last week which included getting final jeopardy on really big wagers, seemed like she had regained her footing there after a bit of a cold streak

anyway — absolute icon & legend. what a run.

Holzhauer also lost to a Chicago librarian (Emma Boettcher). It's a curse!

honestly don't know if i could continue watching regularly if bialik became permanent host. i find her saccharine, phony, and cringe. CBS is seriously at risk of losing the demographic of people 3 decades younger than the show's median viewer who watch the show via adless illegal youtube rips if they chose her over ken

flopson, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 16:27 (two years ago) link

she shills for bullshit brain power supplements too

Jaime Pressly and America (f. hazel), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 16:29 (two years ago) link

i don’t mind her but it’s clear that ken is just miles better, more natural and more engaging as a host. she has the same problem of stiltedness as most of the hosts they tried out

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 February 2022 16:31 (two years ago) link

dying to know what demands, negotiations and hubris led to mayim being introduced every show as "the host of jeopardy" and ken as "hosting jeopardy."

still flummoxed and curious about this.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 16:47 (two years ago) link

i grew to like ken a lot more over the course of his last run. his humour in the meet the contestants segment started to grate on me a bit; the way he always had a clever little line to wrap each interview with. (the trebek interviews were obviously a miracle of oblique comedy that will never be replicated). i like the little trebekisms that ken's adopted, like saying "good" in response to a correct answer

there's an old interview where trebek says that the real stars are the writers of the clues, and anyone could host it. there's a lot of truth to that, but only up to a point. something about mayim's cadence reading clues reminds me of a keen elementary school student and it takes me out of it

flopson, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 16:48 (two years ago) link

xp- my guess is she and mike richards signed contracts back in august, his got torn up but hers still valid, and it says "host of jeopardy" on it since she was hired to do college tournaments & specials

Jennings was manning the trivia board during Schneider’s victory run. At first, she didn’t consider him a shoe-in for permanent host despite his record as a long-running contestant. After seeing the Jeopardy! GOAT in action at the lectern, Schneider views Jennings as the only one for the job.

“Ken Jennings should be the host,” Schneider said on CNN, according to The Week. “I really can’t say enough about him. I didn’t necessarily think that before going into this because, yes, he was a great champion, but this is a different skill set. But you could see the work that he put into it, and I just thought he did a really great job. So as far as I’m concerned, that’s my endorsement.”

i can see why he would say this i mean it does *seem* easy but actually imparting genuine personality and having a rhythm when you're basically only ever speaking in intermittent 3 second sound bites is actually pretty difficult. even practiced TV ppl like joe buck weren't great at it, i feel like ken having been on the show more than any other person on earth aside from trebek makes it unsurprising that he was one of the only ppl they tried out who actually gave the show connective tissue instead of coming off as a robot interjecting quips in the midst of human conversation

recent 4 day champion margaret who i was very sad to see go is first cousins w/ eli & peyton manning (her mom is archie's brother)

https://www.post-gazette.com/ae/tv-radio/2022/03/07/margaret-shelton-jeopardy-champion/stories/202203070074

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 9 March 2022 22:29 (two years ago) link

i was sad to see margaret go, too, and what a heartbreaking way to lose. she and maureen, who beat her, both made the wrong bets in final. maureen's bad bet should've handed margaret the win, and then margaret handed it right back with an equally bad bet. i yelled at my tv.

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 10 March 2022 03:13 (two years ago) link

margaret looked like she was done tbh. she seemed stressed!

I only caught the end, but Maureen did not have a good performance Friday. I don't know if I've ever seen a returning champ of repeated days actually neg out and not get to be in Final Jeopardy before.

Precious, Grace, Hill & Beard LTD. (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 12 March 2022 18:02 (two years ago) link

she had a bad run of misses and I can tell it affected her psychologically, because she stopped buzzing in altogether for long stretches, trying to be surgical in an attempt to get back into the black.

i read to 69 position (Neanderthal), Saturday, 12 March 2022 18:05 (two years ago) link

all of the contestants got pretty cagey in the second round due to how close it was, so many questions where nobody buzzed in

i read to 69 position (Neanderthal), Saturday, 12 March 2022 18:05 (two years ago) link

i got the impression that maureen was a lush. something about the way she slurred her words and was slow to answer questions after buzzing in. also she said in an interview that she's been doing weekly bar trivia for two decades. at one point she cleared a category titled "booze" and ken made a crack about it. iconic contestant imo

flopson, Saturday, 12 March 2022 18:36 (two years ago) link

I started to watch the college championship on youtube. First round had a Series category, and I was surprised that none of them knew what series "Vice City" or "Operation Raccoon City" was in. Maybe they just study all the time, no time for pop culture? Then Double Jeopardy round has a tiktok category and they sweep it. I realize I am old.

I managed 25 correct answers (9 first round, 15 second round, and the final). Really wanted someone to choose that final opera question so I could sweep the category, but alas.

As for the final... "Doctor Dracula"???

So, Mattea...

Precious, Grace, Hill & Beard LTD. (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 14 April 2022 17:10 (two years ago) link

Really, really hate that she extemporizes after, seemingly, every answer or category pick. It eats time from the round and it's dirty Jeopardy playing. Sure hope someone reels that in prior to tournament of champions. Neither Ken or Mayim have done a good job with reeling her in on this bad play habit (Shoot, Mayim is just as guilty of this as host).

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 14 April 2022 18:12 (two years ago) link

They need to do the tournament of champions as a live competition.

I think it could become a bigger deal if they did.

I don't get the sense at all that she's doing it intentionally, or to "play dirty." And is it really eating time from the rounds? How many clues were left on the board during her run?

I love that she does it. She's playing like she's watching at home, and it seems to sharpen her focus.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 15 April 2022 18:25 (two years ago) link

Yep - I respectfully disagree. Maybe she doesn't do it intentionally, but the fact remains that the show runs a tight play-time schedule. Mattea obviously has a wide breadth of knowledge and, more importantly, is fast on the buzzer. For every 'oh my golly gosh' reaction she shows before or after giving an answer/picking a category, that further throws off other player's timing on figuring out how to be faster at ringing in their buzzers, and it cuts into overall round time (thus my 'dirty' play inference). Matt Amodio was fast on the buzzer, but was extra sharp/clipped with his microphone time (using 'What' for everything was genius). Even talky/charismatic players like James or Austin kept their mic time short other than for answers or category picks.
