One of my biggest pet peeves in the cartoon world is when folks "shade" their dark-skinned characters with straight, solid lines like that.

from your day? note that the character is portrayed as being between her mid 30s to mid 40s, making "her day" the Reagan era.

Also, same line of reasoning we've heard elsewhere: if we just let the generals FIGHT the war, if we just let our soldiers loose and not worry about all this collateral damage or destroyed infrastructure, why, we'd have them licked by christmas! I mean, hell, massive brutality worked so well in the philippines!

DBD is so completely and utterly frustrating because I see the words, and I'm proficient in English... but in this case, the words are completely devoid of any kind of meaning. If pressed, I could not re-state Muir's point in any one of his strips. (other than the generalized "HAHA Lib'ruls SUCK" bullshit)

At least with the fucking duck I feel like we're speaking the same language.

milo z, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah I kinda feel that way too - the narratives are so disconnected and buried in layers of "ironic" commentary that I don't even know who's who or what they're getting at.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 18:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Shinseki is famous for his remarks to the U.S. Senate Armed Services committee before the war in Iraq in which he said "something in the order of several hundred thousand soldiers" would probably be required for post-war Iraq. Donald Rumsfeld and Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz publicly disagreed with his estimate.

If nothing else, at least in these guys lazy attacks, the point of the attacked concept is getting across, i.e. they actually understand what a "carbon footprint" is, even if they attack anyone talking about it or the very idea of caring about it.

kingfish, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 19:04 (sixteen years ago) link

http://media.townhall.com/Townhall/Car/b/20070711RZ1AP-LiveEarth.jpg

Wait, are they attacking "celebrities" or "bands"?

kingfish, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 19:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I confess that while flipping past the Live Earth footage I too was thinking "I wonder how much energy this thing is wasting"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_earth#Carbon_footprint

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link

but in general I have really negative feelings about celebrity-cause events, seeing as how I can't think of a single one that's ever produced anything worthwhile (exception: maybe MAYBE the RATM-Zapatista-Chiapas concert). They function more as barometers of what cause is popular with media-types at the moment than as vehicles for political action.

Okay, some questions:

1. Who is saying Live Earth failed, and by what criteria?
2. Why would global warming "destroy the musical tastes of our listeners"?
3. Why would the failure of global warming to do so entail the failure of Live Earth?
4. Just generally wtf?

Neil S, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 09:33 (sixteen years ago) link

1. it was not promoted well
2. global warming prompted this concert, which if it were popular, would prove that americans have no taste, because the acts were presumably no good
3. see above

(notice how the cartoon concedes that global warming IS destroying the earth.. small steps, people... if the price is gore being ridiculed into an early grave i'll take it)

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 09:51 (sixteen years ago) link

two things:

1) hillary derangement syndrome in full effect
2) you remember all those stories about how Clinton staffers trashed the WH and stole all the Ws off the keyboards, y'know, the shit that never actually happened?

not really batshit, i just like John McCain in his funny hat:

http://media.townhall.com/Townhall/Car/b/varv071107a.jpg

meanwhile, back to the batshit:

http://media.townhall.com/Townhall/Car/b/gm070710.jpg

tho the cartoon is technically correct, in that the weather and climate are two different things.

also, we have this one:

http://media.townhall.com/Townhall/Car/b/PN071307.jpg

which is some serious lazy-ass shit, in terms of having no idea what the hubbub is about...

I'm trying to figure out Moon toon. The NEA, damn latte drinkers, have a base on the moon from which they shout their (non) positions on issues at an Earth that has seemingly been plowed or raked, presumably by illegal immigrants. Or possibly that suitcase is a bomb left by a terrorist group also called NEA to wreak havoc upon Lunar dwellers.

uhm, that's a joke, son? Thank God there are partisans in foxholes. Oh, and didjaknow that the media can surrender?

Also, we're occupying an urban country and fighting several different groups of insurgents in several different cities. It's a good thing that Iraqi cities apparently have plenty of earthworks and foxholes like it's fucking Bastogne.

the only thing I can figure is that they're saying gays are left-wing hence not neocon hence anti-Israel hence unwittingly supporting militant Islamists who kill gays. right? right??

maybe I should see for myself and google "gays" "Palestinians" !
