I figured there'd be fewer voters again this year, but didn't anticipate the scale of attrition. Oof.

i have to admit it was very hard to get myself to put together a ballot or even noms this yr
perhaps persistent stress abt society's slow collapse has something to do w/ it idk
― dyl, Saturday, 22 January 2022 17:03 (two years ago) link
Understandable, but you've gotta have something to look forward to. I basically ignored the polls for all these years on ILM, but last year's was a lockdown highlight so I promised to participate.

raising my hand to say it's gonna take some time to organize this on my end for consumption, likely aiming at a January 31 rollout.

Yeah, I think both "the world is going to hell so I'm not bothering with some pointless poll" and "the world is going to hell so I need this bright spot of levity in my life" are understandable positions. The former is p much why I figured we'd be going down in numbers, more than anything about board population in general.
xp

Maybe someone else would like to roll out Tracks and you can take over for Albums? xp
― imago, Saturday, 22 January 2022 17:53 (two years ago) link
We're going to take the week and start on the 31st as forks said. I suggest reading old rollout threads as a pretty entertaining way to kill time :)
― Vangelis fleadh (seandalai), Saturday, 22 January 2022 17:55 (two years ago) link
Sorry, I didn’t vote. I had like 5 albums to nominate and no tracks. Reflecting on that makes me feel bad that I didn’t have the energy or focus to investigate further for the sake of the poll or especially myself. Definitely lacking the energy to be cheerleader for the few albums I actually nominated. Maybe it’s these times we’re living in, or my obsession with older music. I’ll hopefully do better in the future.
― Evan, Saturday, 22 January 2022 18:16 (two years ago) link
Didn’t vote this time after having done some nominations. Been too busy with family obligations and work to keep up on everything I wanted to listen to. I probably would have cast only votes for Sir Charles Jones, and Kumera Zekarias. Likely only a handful of votes for Caetano Veloso . Next year will hopefully return to voting
― curmudgeon, Saturday, 22 January 2022 18:50 (two years ago) link
the decline 2020-22 looks consistent with the trend 2013-19 so i wouldn’t assume pandemic has much to do with it. i feel like dread of the imminent collapse of society has been pretty constant over the whole period too. my gueee is it’s a combination of less people on the board overall + the broader shift in music consumption towards older music as documented here https://tedgioia.substack.com/p/is-old-music-killing-new-music

there's less action on ILX in general and on ILM in particular is the way i break it down to an extent, no new blood and a slow trickle of folks stopping posting and either lurking or leaving. the core community is still made up of enough genre specialists, music industry professionals, writers and artists that I feel like we present a meaningfully interesting cross section of the year's music in a way that's manageable, diverse and excellent enough that this continues to be worth the trouble. But for how many more years? Dunno.
― i cannot help if you made yourself not funny (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 22 January 2022 20:36 (two years ago) link
anyway the results are tabulated, the playlists are all programmed and moka is building the images now. The results, given the size of the participant pool is predictably unpredictable and I guarantee everyone will find some things to be happy about, some things to be upset about and some new music you don't know but will like.

I definitely feel this. I've had a better pandemic than many others, but I can't remember a year when I was so disengaged from music and other interests...even the releases I liked were "more of the same". The only thing that felt new to me was a dive into solo Beatles albums - I'd never heard Ram, or Plastic Ono Band, or Ringo the Fourth before. When it was time to vote I was a bit stuck as to what to vote for.

It means my picks are more likely to be pointed to as evidence of the board's decline into irrelevance and decrepitude.

Depends. We're all still waiting for Johnny Fever to announce that #1 Boys was a joke entry.

fwiw, I've never voted in one of these *until* this year, and the only reason i felt compelled to do so is that my job kept me more tethered to a computer than I've been in years. Downtime at work? I'll investigate some music, download it, listen to it while working. Rinse, repeat, for 365 days— I listened to more new music this year than I have in almost any year in my adult life, saving a year or two of my time at uni.

Forks! I can rollout tracks results tomorrow no problem. The only day I might be m.i.a. for a couple of hours is Tuesday.

― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 24 January 2022 00:08 (two years ago) link
guys! already talked to forks. He is running the tracks poll!
If you're anxious for results I could perhaps do the albums rollout next week (23-28) and forks will do tracks rollout on Jan. 31.
Or... we do it as we usually do... tracks first and then albums on Feb. 7.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 24 January 2022 02:02 (two years ago) link

― flopson, Monday, 24 January 2022 02:22 (two years ago) link
Hold up. I'm still working on album images and we need to do base code/text.
Seems fairly simple but there's actually a lot of work behind the scenes! We'll stick to the usual schedule of tracks first, then albums. Better not to rush it!
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 24 January 2022 03:58 (two years ago) link
It's worth it, though. I know I say this every year since I've been on the eoy team, but results are interesting! I don't know if my musical taste was very insular in 2021, but think this is the first year that I'm not acquainted with most of the tracks/albums that made it. I still haven't listened to the winners, I'll wait until the actual rollout to discover them.
