many are more expensive but you can definitely find an old Yamaha model for around that price

The 1958 Les Paul™ Standard Reissue features all the painstaking historic construction methods of the famous '59 Reissues with a few historically-accurate spec differences that allow it to stand on its own. Like the 1958 originals, it has narrow frets which help more of the fingerboard wood to be heard in the tone profile.

thanks johnny. i think im going to try and get my hands on one this year. their website is super confusing and its hard to figure out what the difference is between all the model numbers

I was able to get ahold of a new RS502TFM (same as the RS502T but with the "Japanese denim" finish) about six months ago, after a month or two of online shopping and Out of Stock messages. I signed up to get notified when they were back in stock at Sweetwater and a few other stores and I eventually did get notified that they were in stock, maybe 4-5 months later, but in the meantime one had popped up on Reverb and I grabbed it. Really happy with it! Like Johnny said, the tailpiece doesn't really add anything, but I like the look of it.

I have a hard time imagining the nexus of "loves Joe Strummer" "has $15k to spend on a guitar" "loves Joe Strummer enough to spend $15k on a guitar." That's like three guys in the world, right, all from '90s Epitaph bands?

Fender should source brighter tortoiseshell pickguards IMO

It's not even the 'ignore alien orders' Telecaster that I would think most people would think of him using with the Clash. Like a Slash signature guitar that's a goldtop or something.

love a tort guard but i'm not sure if i'll ever have the right guitar for one

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 January 2022 01:21 (two years ago) link

White, black, sunburst and sometimes charcoal frost are the only colors where tort really works for me.

And never on Telecasters regardless of color for some reason.

rong

My favorite Fender color scheme is Midnight Wine with tortoise. I've had several guitars with this look.

I sold my wine-dark Tele for reasons I don't remember, and its replacement is a Squier "classic vibe" Thinline. I ordered a tortoise pickguard for it, but for some perverse reason the one I ordered arrived without holes, and I haven't gotten round to getting that taken care of.

umami dearest (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 21 January 2022 01:48 (two years ago) link

the thinline guards would look ok in tortoise, it's the classic tele guard i'm stuck on

Nothing screams 'authentic punk' quite like spending $15,000 on a guitar.

mirostones, Friday, 21 January 2022 02:25 (two years ago) link

xps there is already a Strummer signature with those decals etc, came out around 2005?
I know it's been done to death but the relic'ing is so cringe - particularly because it has to be done in such a way that it can be identified as "factory" to retain its supposed value. The drawn-in Kluson outlines behind the Schaller tuners are just embarrassing.
And Milo that Spitfire is gorgeous, is the Jag an o.g. '65 or an AV65? I can't remember if they came in sunburst.

I've got one of these with a tort guard and it looks great on purple

Don't mind vintage-color tortoise on most Jazzmasters, maybe just not on the lighter colored bodies?

I don't really like the brownish tortise on anything but the reddish is my favorite on the Fender 50s bright colors - sonic blue, fiesta red, shell pink, etc.

yeah I really like their models, they have a classic feel, doesn't feel like they are trying too hard to be wacky but at the same time they aren't just slight variations on strats and teles with premium hardware and woods.

there had been some interest in revstars upthread, found this one if anyone is interested, these look to have replacement pups (seymour duncan? can't quite see) but something about this finish, the black pickguard, and the zebra pups really looks nice to me (i've seen the same model with traditional chrome pickup covers and i like this better)

dogg...this is a serious guitar, bet it's beautiful

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 24 January 2022 21:08 (two years ago) link

Yeah. My first guitar was my stepfather's OO, I sold it when I was 21 or so for the Lowden (the Martin wasn't so playable), but then in 2015 I came upon a 1936 O at a guitar shop in Santa Monica and it was thousands of dollars but it sounded so good and my partner agreed and he had a rare moment of "encouraging me to buy gear" and since then it's been my staple studio guitar

I played it on a session at Magic Shop before it shut down and the engineer Kabir Herndon said from the control room "uh that is the most beautiful sounding acoustic I've ever heard"

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 24 January 2022 21:16 (two years ago) link

A friend is a professional oboist and I said something once about a guitar being expensive - like 'thousands of dollars' expensive - and she laughed at my concept of expensive.

the economics of professional orchestra instruments are such a mindfuck

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 25 January 2022 19:11 (two years ago) link

My aunt, a cellist, was once robbed at knifepoint at an ATM in Boston. As she handed over the $250 contents of her checking account, she said she had a tough time not laughing with joy and relief, because the thief had no apparent interest in the $25,000 cello sitting next to her on the sidewalk.

Spottie, Tuesday, 25 January 2022 20:17 (two years ago) link

Spottie, Tuesday, 25 January 2022 20:17 (two years ago) link

Over the past twenty years, the "box made in China, instrument finished domestically" assembly-line model has become more accepted for orchestral string instruments. Generally, new instruments are of much higher quality and are cheaper than they used to be. Also, modern violas in general are typically better quality than historical violas due to small-but-significant improvements in their construction. I don't know if the same is true for double basses but I'd assume it is also true
