coint and plick - is that happening this year?

i would find this more interesting this year if we didn't limit it to games released this year but instead could nominate whatever we were playing.

a long time ago there was an idea about making coint and plick about games from TWO years ago instead of the previous year

Karl Malone, Monday, 17 January 2022 20:56 (two years ago) link

I'd like to see this year's happen but can't promise I'd get a ballot in.

Wouldn't necessarily mind a "what were you playing last year" poll but I've never been into the "games from two years ago" idea - I would absolutely forget about things or not realise they were from the correct year, it would be much more of a problem for me than the issue of not having got round to something in the year of release.

I played a handful of 2021 games so I could do a small ballot or I could just give 100 points to Hitman

salsa shark, Monday, 17 January 2022 21:12 (two years ago) link

Went through my records and found that I played... a single 2021 game. So, shrug.

this is kind of interesting but i have a couple of concerns - one, the results are already super disparate and this would only widen the gap, and two, we're just gonna end up with the same games at the top of the list every year... i know games aren't the same as movies and music, but imagine doing this on one of those polls?

Marvel Puzzle Quest will be on the list no matter what the rules are

absolutely, question is will it be the exception or the rule? idk how interesting it'll be if every year we have the same GaaS or classic games pop up.

i suppose the question is what the purpose of coint and plick is? Consumer guide? Place to share past year's experience? Hall of fame?

i cannot help if you made yourself not funny (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 January 2022 21:56 (two years ago) link

I think it's sort of the second one, i.e. a statement of what games released from the past year you played and liked, which at the same time is sort of a consumer guide (as all such lists tend to be).

I have floated the idea of a separate Hall of Fame voting before, with the stipulation that a game has to be some number of years old before we can vote on them.

It seems sort of purposeless to be honest but I like making lists

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 20 January 2022 22:03 (two years ago) link

I like it as a way of sharing gaming experiences, which works best when people submit blurbs for their selections, but that obviously creates a lot more work for the coordinator.

salsa shark, Thursday, 20 January 2022 23:55 (two years ago) link

Going against the grain here and saying keeping the year IS important, even/especially for people like me who play few games in their release year anymore. Like how many times have we had a discussion go 'oh yeah, this placed high in P&C that year, people liked it at the time!" And those blurbs are key, combing through posts and feedback (like salsa, that effort to collect it is immensely appreciated).

Nhex, Friday, 21 January 2022 13:31 (two years ago) link

The problem with calendar year is obviously that a) most games come out in the last 3 months of the year which doesn't leave a lot of time for people to play them before Dec 31st even if they are buying stuff on release, and b) outside gamepass, playing new games on release is an increasingly niche activity anyway given that everyone has backlogs and almost everything that's £60-70 in Q4 will be £30 within 6 months and £20 within 12 months.

So polling a month or two into the new year just feels too soon. Maybe polling the best games of 2021 in November 2022 would make more sense. Or even polling the best games of 2020 in November 2022.

JimD, Friday, 21 January 2022 14:06 (two years ago) link

(I just scrolled up and Karl suggested this same thing 2 years ago. But yeah these are the reasons I've not voted in the last couple of P&Cs. This month I've made a start on Assassin's Creed Valhalla and then I'm moving on to Cyberpunk, both still feel pretty new tbh but yeah technically they're both 2020 games so even if it turns out I love them, I've missed my chance to rep for them).

JimD, Friday, 21 January 2022 14:33 (two years ago) link

(I just scrolled up a bit less and Karl suggested it again like 4 days ago ha).

JimD, Friday, 21 January 2022 14:34 (two years ago) link

Haha, yeah it’s not a winning idea, sadly

I do kind of like the idea of a periodic all-time list, either hall of fame style or a rolling hot 100 kind of thing. But that’s a lot more work for whoever has to run the thing, and it would have to be done semi-regularly

Karl Malone, Friday, 21 January 2022 15:24 (two years ago) link

Too much work for everyone for a little nerdy fun honestly

Nhex, Friday, 21 January 2022 17:57 (two years ago) link

I think, as I sometimes do, of a universe where ILX became reddit and we all became admins for a community of hundreds of thousands and polls like this got write ups in the Guardian

i cannot help if you made yourself not funny (forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 January 2022 20:42 (two years ago) link

is there an easy casual midway point for an end of year review where we have a dedicated '2021 in review' thread and everyone is invited to post their fav game(s), top recommendations, fav game from a previous year, disappointments etc - but without someone having to set up a nomination thread and coordinate the rankings and reveal? though realise it would probably overlap someehat with the 'what are you playing' thread

salsa shark, Saturday, 22 January 2022 14:35 (two years ago) link

I like that idea!

Lol I was about to suggest the same thing, only just read your posts ss

Buchiko and The Man (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 23 January 2022 20:07 (two years ago) link

I support this idea. Everyone can just post their ballots with comments and cut out the countdown middle man.

one year passes...

What are people's thoughts on polling 2023? Or do the thing we did last(?) year and each of us just summarize what we played and liked?
