Ep 4 certainly answered the questions about why he ditched hunting and became daimyo.

also, lots of "I am Bóba Fett" not Boba Fétt

This week’s episode was a pleasant surprise!

Forgive the thread spam, but I wanted to note that all the ding dang star wars shows what aired in 2021 are nominated in the ILX TV poll, with voting ending this weekend:

ILX's Best Television of 2021 Poll / VOTING AND CAMPAIGNING THREAD / Voting Ends After January 31, 2022

If you like this show and you'd like to see it have a good showing in the poll (running in February) all you need to do is submit a ballot including it and your other favorites (3 minimum, 25 maximum, ranked by your favorite to least favorite) to forksclovetofu at gmail. It'll take five minutes; get to it!

Mostly this episode highlighted how much more I now like SPOILER than Bobba. The ringworld was sick, but could've used a few parks.

this episode <3

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 27 January 2022 05:24 (two years ago) link

Yeah that was good all around, both on the serious and fun tip. Nice how it seems to partially set up a third season of something else.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 January 2022 06:16 (two years ago) link

cranking that fan service dial up to 1000%

mh, Thursday, 27 January 2022 17:21 (two years ago) link

I mean, this entire series is 1000% fan service from the jump, so that seems an odd complaint. I'd argue that the entire Disney+ series ecosystem (Marvel, Star Wars) exists solely as fan service.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 27 January 2022 17:25 (two years ago) link

It just feels like it's losing momentum with each episode, though I guess that's not a common complaint.

a hallan shaker loon (dowd), Thursday, 27 January 2022 19:04 (two years ago) link

that wasn’t a complaint! i’m a fan and i appreciated the service

mh, Thursday, 27 January 2022 19:25 (two years ago) link

Sorry, I think I'm just so used to people using "fan service" as a pejorative that I made a faulty assumption.

Wait so Grogu shows up? Guess I gotta watch the rest of this mess. We gave up after ep 2, where they got into a fight with some people riding on a train for no good reason.

DJI, Thursday, 27 January 2022 19:38 (two years ago) link

where they got into a fight with some people riding on a train for no good reason.

This is.. not what happened? A spice syndicate was passing by on a train, shooting at (and killing a couple of) the Tusken Raiders that Boba Fett had been captured by. He led an attack on the train in revenge.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 27 January 2022 20:25 (two years ago) link

Seemed to me a train was driving by and the tuskans were shooting at it. Why would the spice traders randomly open fire on the tuskans from a train?

DJI, Thursday, 27 January 2022 20:38 (two years ago) link

I thought it was pretty clear that the spice traders had attacked them multiple times in the past, to the point that the Tuskens had somewhat of watch out for the train so they could be ready to fire back and defend themselves.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 27 January 2022 20:53 (two years ago) link

I’m pretty sure that shooting at native peoples from a train for the hell of it, or due to some past conflict, isn’t something the show writers invented

mh, Thursday, 27 January 2022 20:54 (two years ago) link

Yeah this point was totally clear

Animals must have a name (morrisp), Thursday, 27 January 2022 21:03 (two years ago) link

Sure. I don't want to shit on this show, but y'all are nuts if you think this is good TV. Especially when you compare it to the Mandolorian.

DJI, Thursday, 27 January 2022 21:31 (two years ago) link

I mean, I don't care if you hate it, but your terrible description of basic plot points leads me to believe you barely paid attention to what was on the screen.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 27 January 2022 21:38 (two years ago) link

That is possible. It was not engaging.

DJI, Thursday, 27 January 2022 21:43 (two years ago) link

A reason people are a little prickly about this is that the reference points are obvious and very ugly

i cannot help if you made yourself not funny (forksclovetofu), Friday, 28 January 2022 01:08 (two years ago) link

This is not a hill I want to die on, but that is a story about clashes between railroad builders and Native Americans. Boba Fett had a story about dudes zooming through a landscape (why are they not just flying in the air? Who knows?) taking potshots at Tuskan Raiders for unexplained reasons other than that they are assholes. Seems like a shaky parallel to me, but if that was their intent, fine.

DJI, Friday, 28 January 2022 01:18 (two years ago) link

I believe they are shooting at them because they are raiders. Perhaps flight is expensive for the amount or weight of cargo. Or maybe a train is safer for transporting illegal stuff.

I know we will continue to be a power couple (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 28 January 2022 01:27 (two years ago) link

DJI, i'm sympathetic to your desire to not read too much into a space chambara but i do think the parallels with genuine aboriginal v colonizer wars - whether american or elsewhere - were clearly intentional

that said, i stopped on the second episode and - though I'll likely go back - I've found this notably less charming and clever than the mando and baby yoda program. not really sure why, except that neither temuera or ming-na haven't been much fun to watch.

i cannot help if you made yourself not funny (forksclovetofu), Friday, 28 January 2022 01:38 (two years ago) link

they are both v low-key actors & the pacing of Boba Fett series is a lot slower than Mando seemed

to my memory anyway

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 28 January 2022 01:47 (two years ago) link

But the thing is I'm loving practically every minute of it.

I hope the Obi-Wan series is better, but GD do I have Tatooine burnout

Animals must have a name (morrisp), Friday, 28 January 2022 01:53 (two years ago) link

I thought the attack on the train was a Lawrence of Arabia reference, though it's been a long time since I saw it.

but when SPOILER showed up i was like aaaaaaahhhhh omg i missed u boo

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 28 January 2022 02:46 (two years ago) link

The original Mando series had to prove Star Wars could work as a TV serial without sacrificing any of the production quality and visual imagination while finding new ways to expand the types of stories that could exist within the Star Wars mythos. This lent a dimension of danger to the weekly unfolding of each episode, even if the overarching motif was still that of marrying two ultimately conservative forms: the Western and the Space Opera. It seems, at least so far, Boba has doubled down on the more conservative aspects of the Mando series - more of a burrowing into a small section of the mythos than a pushing outward of the envelope.

Mandy was also (mostly) fun, even when it was junky fun. Fett isn’t much fun, IMO, not sure why

Animals must have a name (morrisp), Friday, 28 January 2022 04:25 (two years ago) link

o nate - yeah that seems right

i love the digging-in aspect of it, i think bc slow pacing is not as common in these kinds of shows it is good that there’s a lot of room to explore

also i know its been a thing w this character for ages now but it occurred to me just the other day that it is so powerful that Morrison uses his native accent & is not having to do some kind of generic american accent or something

I hope the Obi-Wan series is better, but GD do I have Tatooine burnout

Oh god, so much this. With such an expansive universe, I'm over Tatooine. But I'm sure Obi-Wan will spend at least some time there.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 28 January 2022 05:58 (two years ago) link

we all need to appreciate that Favreau+Dis wrote a script that let the Star Wars universe have Jerri Blank

There's been at least one thing in each episode I've enjoyed, but overall, this Boba Fett season has felt kind of flat

mh, Friday, 28 January 2022 16:23 (two years ago) link

I'm more of a Star Trek person than Star Wars, but I think for TV that is basically aimed at the enteral 12 year old, The Mandolorian/Boba Fett has been pretty cool.

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 30 January 2022 19:35 (two years ago) link

Tatooine is like Smallville in the old Superboy comics; a sleepy backwater where thrilling adventures constantly happen, out of narrative necessity.

Good job the Mandalorian featured several other planets! Which were mostly indistinguishable from Tatooine.
