kim & 50 tower over the rest here. nelly, justin, and busta are good too but not on the same level.

“Addicted” is such a laughably terrible song.

"The Jump Off"... jumps OFF

Roz, Saturday, 15 January 2022 07:13 (two years ago) link

I kept going through 2003 until finding one where I recalled enjoying more than half of the songs -- so that was #10-#6 and #1. I forgot that "Pimp Juice" is also kinda good and the B2K track is ok. So this is a much stronger episode than average.

"Losing Grip" is probably Avril Lavigne's best song. "Stuck" is way better than it has any right to be.

But yea "The Jump Off" is the true classic here, more so than "In Da Club," which has aged better than expected but I still prefer "Magic Stick" or "21 Questions."

10. eminem - sing for the moment
9. B2K - girlfriend
8. avril lavigne - losing grip
7. nelly - pimp juice
6. simple plan - addicted
5. lil kim - the jump off
4. stacie orrico - stuck
3. busta rhymes - i know what you want
2. justin timberlake - rock your body
1. 50 cent - in da club

i have fond memories of my top 5 here, all great tracks. my feelings towards the busta/mariah song are still very warm, its softness, the near abrasive raspiness of the way mariah's vocals are treated, the way the beat & busta's annunciations are both very deliberate and ennunciated, there aren't many duets esp in the rap/R&B world that sound like it. the stacie orrico song is just massive, what a monument of professional pop songwriting and production. the kind of early to mid 00s brass beats a la "the jump off" make me feel like i have a bit of a cavity these days but there's a spaciousness in that production i really like & the chorus is very memorable.

"addicted" is a pretty stupid song but def a classic of this TRL mall rock era, the simple plan guy's affected sneer is really goofy but delivers the song. "pimp juice" is really kinda technically impressive, nelly was extremely talented. it's a fun song, that era of nelly was really tacky in retrospect (me not being 15) & i don't have any desire to listen to that kind of stuff of his any longer ("over & over" excepted, total classic) but he does kind of pull it off. still prob like his 15th best song or something

"losing grip" i have no memory of. the B2K song not one of their bests imo, & eminem one is of course pretty dire as was par for the course for that era (and pretty much after that)

Mad lurkers. A good winner but also surprising.

3. Eminem "Sing For The Moment" 1
I'm going to assume they thought this was a different song.
