Hayley Williams always knew her debut solo album, Petals for Armor, would be a detour, but she still felt anxious about getting Paramore back together after several years apart. But on the first day she, Taylor York, and Zac Farro reconnected at a Nashville studio space, those nerves quickly melted into relief.

“We wrote and tracked something we loved and it actually surprised us,” Williams tells Rolling Stone in an email. “We kept joking it was all downhill from that point, but thank God we’ve been surprised a lot throughout this whole thing. I’m always waiting for the moment for us to know we’re onto something new and we’re not just rehashing the same shit. It was ‘Ain’t It Fun’ for our self-titled record, and ‘Hard Times’ or ‘Told You So’ for After Laughter. It’s not about it feeling like a hit so much as it’s a scary, exciting feeling that you’re treading uncharted waters. It keeps you curious. We got to feel that feeling early on this time.”

As for the album’s sound, Williams says she and York had been reminiscing on some of their earliest influences well before they began writing the LP. But she’s quick to note that that doesn’t necessarily mean the group is necessarily plotting a “comeback ‘emo’ record.”

“The music we were first excited by wasn’t exactly the kind of music we went on to make,” Williams says. “Our output has always been all over the place and with this project, it’s not that different. We’re still in the thick of it but some things have remained consistent from the start. 1) More emphasis back on the guitar, and 2) Zac should go as Animal as he wants with drum takes.”

“We’ve thought about [the next Paramore album]. Taylor’s mentioned things like: ‘Oh, God – I miss guitars. We’ve found ourselves listening to a lot of older music that we grew up being inspired by. T and I liked stuff that was a bit more ratty sounding: The Rapture, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. All three of us loved Queens Of The Stone Age’s ‘Songs For The Deaf.’”

But yes, I hope for more Failure influence as well.

Any word yet on who will be producing? I think the Justin Meldal-Johnsen partnership has been super beneficial and I'd hate for them to go back in the direction of the Rob Cavallo's of the world.

I'm not going to that whole festival, but a double-headline Paramore/MCR tour would be pretty much the highlight of any year for me.

Love that "Everywhere" cover -- a perfect fit with the After Laughter vibe.

Yeah, it's interesting because they officially retired it in 2018, haven't done anything as a band since then, and Hayley made a point about it in 2020 when Spotify included MizBiz on some women in rock playlist. So it must be a case of the right person asking her. And they did sound fucking good together!

There's also ALL. THE. ATTENTION. the song has received in the past few years, with Willow Smith, Olivia Rodrigo, and Machine Gun Kelly all giving nods to Old Paramore.

I think I will save my disappointment for if Paramore The Band plays it live again.

They didn't officially retire it. She said they won't play it for a while. That they needed a break from it. So in fact they suggested it will be played again. And it probably should. Yeah it's mean in a not very modern way but it's also written by a teenager and true to that perspective. A song that good won't stay down.

Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if they re-wrote the lyrics. During the Eilish performance and the After Laughter tours, Hayley would change it up by just covering her mouth for the word "whore", but left the rest of the lyrics intact. I think there's room for interpretations of a "misery business" that could be interesting, where they could hang different ideas on the basic framework.

They could change it to "bore", or "chore"... alotta options.

In other news, despite it's modest chart performance, "Hard Times" has become quite the CVS Jam.
