three weeks pass...

Ah, went to the supermarket right before the snowstorm, saw they had a 50lb bag of ice melt
For sale. Put it on the bottom of my cart. Remembered to tell the cashier it was there so she could charge me
For it. Pushed the cart out to my car. Put the groceries in my car. Drove away, leaving the 50lb bag of ice melt.

i: carefully fashioned a home-made sprinkler device for plants you need to be delicate with (a jamjar w/holes drilled in the lid)
ii: almost every time i deploy it i unthinkingly unscrew the lid and absolutely undelicately slosh a violent tidal wave of water onto the puir wee shoots

I did similar recently - was peeling the covering off one of those moth sticky traps, then promptly got my hand stuck to it. And a comedy of errors ensued where I got both hands stuck to it trying to get it off. I felt like Mr Bean.

Recipe for nothing

1. Put your bowl of rice in the fridge
2. Turn on the microwave to reheat the rice
3. Wait two minutes
4. Open empty microwave

How could I forget (neither on YouTube)?

1) Thanks. Happy birthday.

Wait, it's your birthday?

Yep.

That's great. Happy birthday.

Thanks. Body or scene?

It's your birthday, I'll take the body.

2) No, to the Zodiac when he called.

He said he had to kill because it was his birthday.

He said it....Wait, he said it was his birthday?

In Toronto for a Jays game today, after which I arranged to watch the Raptors game at a friend's. I have a bad habit of leaving stuff behind, so I double-checked that I had everything when I left for the two-hour drive home: wallet, laptop, book, hearing aids, all there. When I got some drive-through close to home, everything in my wallet looked rearranged...I'll be making a return visit tomorrow.

two weeks pass...

That little misadventure above ended up costing me $300 for a new windshield; caught a pebble on the highway driving in to get my wallet back.

Onward...Went to Waterloo tonight to see a movie, a movie I've seen approximately 30 times. Just before it was about to start, I realized my keys were missing (meaning every key I own; I keep them all on the same chain). Retraced my steps six times between the theatre and my car, parked about 90 seconds away. Not there--I had one of those War Amps tags on there, so I'm assuming someone picked them up and dropped them in a mailbox.

Took a cab home to St. Marys, an hour away: $125. On the way, I arranged for an emergency locksmith. Turns out the woman who owned my house before I moved here three years ago had a dead-bolt on the front door on loan from Fort Knox: took the guy 30-45 minutes to get the front door open. ("Crazy lock"--he said "crazy lock" under his breath a dozen times.) That, combined with the fact that it was after-hours emergency service = $350. The cab driver was great--he waited the whole time to drive me back to Waterloo for my car--so though we'd agreed on $75 for the return trip, I gave him $150 and then another $25 out of guilt. $650 for the night.

I don't post everything that happens to me in the course of a week here--I'd be on here all the time. I'm getting to be a menace to myself every time I leave the house.

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 May 2022 04:24 (one year ago) link

I've locked myself out before and the locksmith guy took literally 2 seconds to get in and charged me 80 quid. which felt expensive until i realised the alternative was being locked out longer.

(but of course i didn't have the cash in my flat so he had to drive me to nearest bank)

this time last week i figured I'd just pop out for some milk, save me having to go out to get some before breakfast the next day. shop was 10 minutes away but in my rush i didn't take any money so had 10 minute walk back to get money, 10 minutes back to the shop and another 10 minutes back to flat. second time I've done that this year.

koogs, Wednesday, 18 May 2022 22:03 (one year ago) link

I locked myself out of the brownstone I was living in years ago while just grabbing the paper. I was standing there in my boxers. Unthinkingly, I put my hand through one of the panes of glass in the door to unlock it. Cost about $200 to replace (in 1993) and my hand was cut up pretty badly. Odd what standing outside in one's underwear does to one's critical thinking skills.

One suggestion I heard and follow is to make a copy of your car key that doesn't have the plastic bit on the end (so it's flat) and keep it in your wallet. This has saved me from needing a locksmith at least once, and also my sister once.

My solution was to get a magnetic key hider. There is a metal ledge behind the bumper you can stick it on top of and it will stay safe there. For that key, I just have a metal replica that will get me in the door but won't start the car. Then I have a copy of my chip key hidden in the car. I know where it is, but it is somewhere non-obvious for thieves (not that anyone would want to steal my 2007 Ford Fusion).
.

peace, man, Thursday, 19 May 2022 09:29 (one year ago) link

I've heard about those magnetic key holders but I figure thieves have too, and it's a pretty quick operation to feel around the bumpers.

― calstars

fucking hell yesterday after two weeks of being too fucked up to brew a new pot of coffee living off mountain dew i tried to drain the pot of cold brew yesterday morning when i woke up. ok first i realized i put the fucking stopper in backwards when i brewed it _again_, and then i fucked up entirely trying to push it out so it could drain, pushing out the filter as well. mmmm mmmm mmm, unfiltered coffee! then i was like, ok, i have more beans, i'll grind some. except that i forgot to put the lid on the receptacle for the grounds, so bam, i ground coffee all over my floor. ok, it's fine, sweep it up, top off the beans, give it another shot, pour in a cup of water... wait. i lost count. that's _three_ cups of water, not two. FUCK.

anyway my day was a complete fucking disaster yesterday. if i seemed to be doing poorly, that was a big part of it.

I was reading a review of some KN95 masks on Amazon and thinking “I feel seen! Someone else had the exact same bad experience with these masks as I did -- I guess I’m not alone after all!” And then realised I was reading my own review from last month.
