this is a semi-decent album but you might as well have called this the Desire Lines Poll, weird that Deerhunter's best song wasn't even written by their main songwriter

feel like they've aged among the worst of their p4k-darling contemporaries, they had some moments but kinda style-over-substance overall. this one's alright but hardly the classic it was hailed as

I just discovered it lately,so i might change my mind but i think it's an excellent record.
Memory Boy for me.

“Don’t Cry” is my vote but it could’ve been several other things.

I think they’ve had a mixed post-2010 run but it’s mostly been positive. No one else in earth cares about this record, I know, but Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? is my favorite album of theirs.

i'm also going with "memory boy"

ufo, Friday, 7 January 2022 13:03 (two years ago) link

I love both "Fountain Stairs" and "He Would Have Laughed"--put the first on a recent list of my 50 favorite songs ever, so I'll vote for that. (I like "Coronado" too.)

i really am fond of bradford - a dazzling showperson, gorgeous voice, the weirdo's weirdo - but i reckon all deerhunter albums aside cryptograms fall short of half-decent. aside a few cuts on this one, too, the songs just aren't memorable enough. cryptograms sounds like its mostly improv, messing about with guitar pedals... but it has some really great moments. as a band, they always seemed messy and clumsy and never really seemed to define a sonic signature..

I love him too. He's gone really quiet, huh? Feel like this is their longest gap between records.

I really *want* to love him, especially for his candor. But he comes across as such an insufferable diva at times.

The way he overenunciates voiceless consonants amuses me and recalls my elementary school choral teacher's scolding.

it will be interesting to see which song wins

ciderpress, Sunday, 9 January 2022 00:34 (two years ago) link

love this album so much but yeah it's definitely "Memory Boy," a sweet two-minute rush where every line hurts

"Desire Lines" will win this handily

which seems like a good opportunity to say it would be nice to get a new Lotus Plaza album

alpine static, Sunday, 9 January 2022 06:04 (two years ago) link

weird reactions, this is a magnificent record, certainly their best.

akm, Sunday, 9 January 2022 18:30 (two years ago) link

coronado or he would have laughed.

the lotus plaza album is great indeed! on many days i like it better than this one, def prefer it to any subsequent deerhunter album

memory boy rules, and revival is quite good too. both are a hair over 2 minutes. they make their point and get out, i love it.

i love him onstage, try to avoid seeing or reading anything he says otherwise. he does not help himself

Helicopter by a very wide margin

Great album, probably my favorite of theirs. I know "Desire Lines" is highly revered, but I'm not even sure it would even make my top five here (my favorite Lockett song is "Ad Astra" from Fading Frontier; chills down the spine on that one). Voting for "Helicopter"--gorgeous musically and devastating lyrically

I love Monomania - it seemed well-reviewed at the time, but eventually it became apparent that few others had the same enthusiasm for it. It's like Deerhunter/Cox fell out of favor with a lot of people beginning with that album.

He Would Have Laughed suffering from being over-served to me by Spotify after listening to something else entirely. Great album.

for real, that outro is just terrific. is the rest of lockett's stuff anything like that? lotus plaza?

anyway, if you're a desire lines head, this is a great version that i was obsessed with for awhile

i think i forgot to vote, but i would've voted for that one

roflrofl fight (voodoo chili), Thursday, 13 January 2022 15:42 (two years ago) link

Yeah, the biggest surprise was 0 votes for that one. "Revival" didn't stand a chance here, but I think it deserved a vote

Great video of Desire Lines. This set also has a version of it, with added backing vocals by Bradford.

global: Lotus Plaza's Spooky Action at a Distance is excellent. And yeah, it's all pretty much like "Desire Lines" ... not all *that* great (tho some is comparable, I would say), but it generally sounds like that.

it's a really murky album in comparison to Halcyon Digest, where every song is very hook-based.

xp thanks alpine! love that album title too

global tetrahedron, Thursday, 13 January 2022 23:49 (two years ago) link

really enjoying this record, but anticipating the almost 7-minute track later on, i need that ~cosmic outro~ shit badly
