I was a huge fan of both of these bands. Saw them both a few times in the early 90s in their prime. I have to admit Pantera's New Years Eve show on teh Cowboys From Hell tour was one of the better shows I've ever seen. Phil is a douche, but he had a great stage presence, and his voice sounded the same live as on record.

Today though... I have absolutely no desire to listen to any Pantera, where as Beneath the Remains and Chaos A.D. still get play. So, Sepultura is my vote.

Gotta go with Sepultura. I'm still a big fan of their Slayer-imitating, pre-Chaos AD period.

That said, Cowboys and Vulgar Display are undeniable.

Also, I didn't say Sepultura sucked, I just said I prefer Pantera's racket (or at least up through Far Beyond Driven).

The opening minute of Territory is HUGE. Still think Pantera had more good songs though - they were generally as brutal as Sepultura, but catchier and funkier.

Neither fact makes me dislike the band(s) both guys were members of. I think Pantera kicks all sorts of ass, at least through Far Beyond Driven

Sepultura for me easily, the only memorable Pantera song I ever heard was "Planet Caravan", although "Fucking Hoff-Style" is the reason youtube was created. And of course, there's THIS:

I do try to keep an open mind sometimes, though. So tell me: If I found Cowboys From Hell and Far Beyond Driven to be unreasonably tuneless and tedious, is it worth my giving Vulgar Display of Power a chance?

probably not.

vulgar display of power has actual melodies i guess. Geir might not agree though.

These are two bands I'm kinda surprised I didn't listen to in middle and high school. Seems like the stuff that totally thrives in weird small towns but somehow I didn't really know about 'em.

Nothing to do with personalities or politics, I like Sepultura a heck of a lot and I don't give a toss about Pantera.

if it's before Max split, Sepultura by a landslide....beneath the Remains, Arise, and to a somewhat lesser degree, Schizophrenia, all kick the shit out of anything Pantera ever did.

i also have to say it is exceedingly lame how pantera attempted to pretend their first four albums (Metal Magic, I am the Night, Power Metal, and Projects in the Jungle) didn't exist. it was funny having convos with their fans as some of them were unaware pantera started out playing glam rock.

i mean it isn't like a hidden secret or anything but their website had no mention of these albums and worded their bio in a way to make it sound like cowboys from hell was their first album when in reality it was just their first 'major label' album.

the last album - the clockwork orange concept album one - sucked though. i was so surprised that i like that dante album. i hadn't listened to sepultura in years. i never listened to pantera. maybe if they had been around when i was a kid i would have liked them. who knows. i listened to krokus and grim reaper when i was a kid and they were pretty bad. i've never actually heard the fabled pantera glam metal albums. maybe i'd like those.

i saw em live a few years ago. pretty spiritless show (Sepultura that is). I bet the Max days were better. even "Beneath the REmains" was meh live.

the only phil anselmo-related product i ever owned was a viking crown album i bought at a cd store cuz i was bored and it was, like, two bucks. it was truly horrible. it was supposed to be a lo-fi basement bm kinda thing and as we all know even when these kinds of albums are "bad" or amateurish they can often be quite entertaining. this was not one of those albums.

if i have anything good to say about the guy (and i don't really have anything bad to say about the guy) its that he was an early champion of eyehategod (and actually black metal in this country, to be fair) and it was his idea to split the immortal "sister fucker" into two parts. which was a great idea.

no one doubt's Phil's commitment to the underground. it's just that he seems to go out of his way to demonstrate it to everyone. 'LOOK EVERYBODY SEE...I HAD A MIND OVER FOUR SHIRT ON IN THIS VIDEO!'

apparently they do a lot of soundtrack work in brazil - sepultura - and they have great studio resources now. including the use of strings, etc. which is one reason why that dante album sounds so awesome. it's a complete studio creation. i LOVE the way that album sounds.

i'll be honest, i haven't heard an album past Arise all the way through. i'm including Chaos A.D. I was a total thrashhead so i guess i ignored that period.

I saw the Chaos AD tour and I saw Pantera open for Black Sabbath. Sepultura was amazing. Pantera was a joke. Except for Dimebag. He really did shred.

And I've seen Soulfly twice and while I don't consider myself a fan, they were excellent live both times. My favorite song of theirs is the one Sean Lennon co-wrote.

I bought a "Best of Sepultura" CD to listen to in the car coz of this thread, but it's been remastered and squashed to shit so it sounds like ass. AVOID THIS CD. I couldn't listen to it & pitched it out of the car window. The intro to "Troops of Doom" is fucking awesome, by the by.

Listening to Chaos AD just now has made me regret my vote. What a powerful, gutfelt album.

new Sepultura is FANTASTIC. their current drummer is tremendous.

I am enjoying it so far. they seem to be thriving.

mega lame that Gloria Cavalera took potshots at Derrick the other day. I'm not linking to it because what she said was dumb and moronic but basically she got mad that Derrick Green had the audacity to answer a question he was asked in an interview asking why everybody keeps asking if Max is going to reunite with the band. You have to figure by now, almost 25 years into his tenure with the band, he has to be mega sick of this fucking question, and yet he diplomatically kept all of the Cavaleras out of his mouth and said the fans that wanted this were just living in the past and that it's not where the band is anymore and Gloria blows up on FB saying "fuck you Derrick, you always gotta bring us up for attention".

I haven't liked even half of the Derrick era, no, but i've liked 3 or 4 of the albums. new fun seems pretty ambitious, isn't just trying to play chugga chugga over tribal drums. also Kisser does some incredible guitar work on this album.
