better yet, let your cats eat your children.

Cats Off to Larry

(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Razor (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 January 2022 20:04 (two years ago) link

A previous housemate at the house in France, who I met briefly, had a cat that they were trying to transition to indoor apartment life after it had been indoor-outdoor. It did not go well. They ended up posting an ad trying to give away the cat with the header "Chat suffit!" I don't think that approach was successful.

Reminds me of the time I saw signs all over Soho that Charlotte Gainsbourg's cat had gone missing.

if your cat must kill, you should train it to get it out of its system by only killing other murderous cats

sarahell, Friday, 7 January 2022 18:37 (two years ago) link

if you think of threads like conversations ...

sarahell, Friday, 7 January 2022 18:38 (two years ago) link

as opposed to folders

sarahell, Friday, 7 January 2022 18:39 (two years ago) link

It’s bizarre I guess if you just skimmed over the part where I talked about ocd and the corrosive effect it’s had on my life all so a bunch of people can tell us how many tests they’re doing each day and give us minute by minute updates of everything. But hey, I must be reacting for no reason and not because

that shouldn’t be enabled because it nearly literally killed me

Bizarre!

“the thread title says it’s ok” arguments fail to sway me. if a thread title told you to jump off a cliff would you do it

good threads are generally conversational, but they do still tend to have more discontinuities and disruptions than an irl conversation. they also stop and start, often requiring a series of false prompts before one post finally gets the conversational part going again. i guess I'm saying there's a folder-conversation spectrum that each thread tends to fall on.

Ssäm Sauce | Martha Stewart (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 7 January 2022 21:10 (two years ago) link

i mean, yeah, Sufjan, you're right -- there are certain ilx threads that are definitely folder like and their intent is such and there isn't really too much conflict or fraught-ness about it. But like, coping with covid is different than album covers with little people in someone's hair

sarahell, Friday, 7 January 2022 21:18 (two years ago) link

right, but that's the other folder-like extreme. even the more conversational threads will have some anecdotes thrown out and ignored. when someone posts about a spotify bug on their phone, they are certainly hoping to have a conversation* about it. it just isn't going to happen every time, so the thread looks like a log of spotify app issues.

at some point satire becomes worse than the thing it's satirising, and that point is where it thinks it's qualified to mock the prevailing pop culture but also really, really wants to be the prevailing pop culture as well

Sometimes it's like pulling teeth to inspire the sort of aforementioned "engagement" most people here enjoy, but that's probably my problem.
