Lammy should know he's really fucked it when even Kieth Flett (who was at the Bernie Grant event with JC and him last year) is bitterly disappointed with him: "Rewriting history doesnt work"!

If you've lost Flett then you've lost the narrative

I was at a party of a Labour MP in 2017 and he gave a speech where he was laughing at the members of his party that had stood up and applauded Corbyn in Parliament after the election. He said, “Isn’t it funny how people’s minds change…when there’s a whiff of power.”

Guess who?!

David Lammy apologised for … voting for the Iraq war? Fiddling MPs expenses? Saying parents should be allowed to hit their children? The bombing of Libya?

No - he apologised for playing a small, accidental part in allowing a glimmer of hope emerge in British politics

Wouldn't be surprised if he'd never actually read the 2019 manifesto he claimed was not costed.

My late uncle who used to live in Tottenham said he was an unpleasant reactionary and a fraud and not fit to walk in Bernie Grant's shoes and he was never wrong about any politicians.

Torsten Bell of the Resolution Foundation -the folk Rachel Reeves is quoting - just said on R4Today that Reeves plans for fuel Vat suspension are too little for any real impact : Govt in real trouble, but Labour's urge to demand very little could let them off the hook pic.twitter.com/FrxAFIurgx

the worst possible time for a pro-austerity opposition of minor adjustments, this ex HBOS ghoul shouldn't be let anywhere near the Labour party.

George Galloway has alleged that his daughter 'was racially abused in a Tesco for being English'

A POLICE investigation is underway after George Galloway claimed his daughter was told to "get back to England" at a supermarket.

The alleged incident is said to have occurred at Tesco in Dumfries on Tuesday afternoon.

My mum and stepdad used to holiday in Scotland. The Irish accent did well for her in non-tourist pubs, he used to cop some anti-English attitude because he's an arrogant blowhard with a Yorkshire accent, but he enjoys that kind of exchange. I can't imagine Galloway's daughter was told to go back to her "racial homeland" without some provocation.

Could've been worse, she could've been arrested and thrown in jail

calzino, Thursday, 30 December 2021 22:35 (two years ago) link

She wouldn't have too far to go from in Dumfries. Seems an unlikely place for anti-Englisj sentiment tbh.

a 40 minute drive from Carlisle, and was a Tory hold in 2019. And the constituency region is called Dumfries & Galloway!

calzino, Thursday, 30 December 2021 23:32 (two years ago) link

Lol, yes. I think the Borders and, at the opposite end, Orkney and Shetland are the most pro-Union, or at least anti-independence, regions of Scotland.

I Can't See Gervais In My Mind (Tom D.), Thursday, 30 December 2021 23:43 (two years ago) link

SNP didn't shame themselves in 2019 in Dumfries, but they were up against a shitload of Tory voters.

Some fools have unsuccessfully tried to make the argument that "Kieth" is a classist slur, which is an accusation so preposterous that nobody gave a fuck. Well "Magic Grandpa" is definitely ageist and such a very poor school playground level epithet that it more induces groans of embarrassment rather than the successful trolling effect of Kieth. This is all imo of course!

calzino, Monday, 3 January 2022 09:54 (two years ago) link

I thought the accusation was that Kieth was xenophobic... or something?

I Can't See Gervais In My Mind (Tom D.), Monday, 3 January 2022 10:56 (two years ago) link

oh you meant the name

Khafre's clown (Noodle Vague), Monday, 3 January 2022 10:59 (two years ago) link

"magic grandpa" was an extremely effective piece of delegitimating political invective (and i *think* that DQ coined it)

if a million people taking to the streets to protest blair's ambition to murder hundreds of thousands of people in iraq and afghanistan had no effect then a bunch of digital signatures is v unlikely to move the needle of conscience much either

balsamic vaccinegar of moderna (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 3 January 2022 12:23 (two years ago) link

remember Marsan's wall of New Labour achievements? well here's the good news: Kieth won't be re-opening the 500 Sure Start centres that the Tories closed!

calzino, Monday, 3 January 2022 12:25 (two years ago) link

also the problem is that it sort of legitimises the honours system even if that isn't the intention.

calzino, Monday, 3 January 2022 12:27 (two years ago) link

Tories may or may not have closed SureStarts but now I'm back on it they were funded for 5 years and were intended to be self funding thru reallocation of budgets and voluntary organisation contributions

Khafre's clown (Noodle Vague), Monday, 3 January 2022 12:32 (two years ago) link

so they almost certainly would have closed a third of them since 2010 whoever won the GE. My favourite Sure Start moment was seeing inspirational quotes stuck to the wall in a meeting room at the Ravensthorpe SS. One quote from Ghandi, one from John Lennon and then one from a mumsnet post!
