an argument against ever tweeting such a weird shitty flattening and smug sentiment for sure

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Saturday, 25 December 2021 18:03 (two years ago) link

I had never heard of either person until they died.

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 25 December 2021 18:51 (two years ago) link

same tbh, but I'm curious about Bell Hooks and couldn't gaf about t'other one!

calzino, Saturday, 25 December 2021 18:53 (two years ago) link

it made me so irate to see some young author on twitter lump her in with bell hooks in a "you should feel no shame about discovering these people after their deaths" tweet. i can't imagine two more polar opposites in spirit. didion on a quest to empty everything out, hooks on a quest for abundance.

― Nedlene Grendel as Basenji Holmo (map), Saturday

Dialectics, baby. I can hang with those binaries.

However, Didion at her best doesn't empty anything out; she fills in detail after detail.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 25 December 2021 19:47 (two years ago) link

Weird how these bite/tweet size quotes from both of them ended up as a way to celebrate their passing. Both as guides on living/paying attention to the world around you.

The Didion did indeed end up feeding a more nihilistic side of the person making the tweet, whereas books fed something more politically hopeful.

Not a way to encounter them though it's always interesting to see how collectives processing death. Thanks to the internet.

I'm in the log onto soulseek AND spend lots of dough on Bandcamp crowd myself.

Will never pay for streams of music.

I pity those who cannot recognise the thrill of getting into the double figures in followers of your playlists now and then. Double. Figures.

nashwan, Saturday, 5 February 2022 16:41 (two years ago) link

I feel like I need to own my music. It’s hard for me to treat streaming as anything but the act of “checking something out”. It’s either in my collection or not.

Evan, Saturday, 5 February 2022 16:53 (two years ago) link

That's kind of how I am too.

I was a big "my collection" type person until fairly recently. Now I'm a big "my playlsits" type person. Streaming is just so much better imo. I'll happily pay some evil mega corp $10/mo til I die to have unlimited access.

Agree with this 100%.

There are so many albums sitting on my shelf (or in my 2TB external hard drive) that I love that are not streaming. It's always gonna be an option of convenience for me; it can never be the primary thing.

Euphoria, Ted Lasso, television in general

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 7 February 2022 13:24 (two years ago) link

Heh, I threw in the towel recently and started watching a few shows but yeah.

Tapioca Tumbril (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 7 February 2022 15:28 (two years ago) link

I love television, I just find the sheer volume of streaming content available overwhelming to the point of being a non-starter.

Like I can't decide what to watch, and half the things I choose I abandon midway through.

I also don't like to watch for more than a few hours per day, so bingeing is out of the question.

he's very big in the region of my butthole (Neanderthal), Monday, 7 February 2022 21:20 (two years ago) link

tv shows and movies are tiring for me to watch. i literally don't watch anything because i don't actually enjoy it. i'm a little worried about it tbh. for one there's nothing to talk about when i meet up with certain people.

Nedlene Grendel as Basenji Holmo (map), Monday, 7 February 2022 21:34 (two years ago) link

There’s so much content out there. I find it’s rare to meet someone who is watching the same shows I am, and most people seem to prefer to talk about what they’re watching than hear about something they haven’t seen. While I enjoy discussing certain shows-in-common with certain close friends, I usually start glancing at the clock when the conversation lands on “what shows are you into?”

beard papa, Monday, 7 February 2022 21:43 (two years ago) link

i'm into watching train cab videos on youtube they're pretty how about you?

Nedlene Grendel as Basenji Holmo (map), Monday, 7 February 2022 21:46 (two years ago) link

the reason I don't like talking about shows is that most people I know that talk about the show will then tell me what it's about (which is fine, I discover shows that way), but then give me an endless summary of shit that happens on the show, as well as funny/noteworthy quotes from the show. and then someone else will be nearby who watches it and they go into a quote/reminiscence fest and I'll be like "cool, remember when I was part of this conversation?".

it's just like one of my good friends, who will prattle on about opera for over an hour, which I do know very little about, am somewhat interested in, and am fine listening to for a few minutes, but once you've gone on for ten or more minutes about something i know littel about and have no entry point to discuss, I'm just nodding and adding "filler words" for a while. that's dull. he means well, and I try to steer the convo back to mutual ground (of which we have a LOT, which is why these detours are so frustrating). it's just...I can only fake it for so long!

there's a reason I don't approach my average non-metal listening friend and go "YO MAN DID U HEAR THE LATEST BATHTUB SHITTER ALBUM", I mean....I believe in knowing thy audience.

he's very big in the region of my butthole (Neanderthal), Monday, 7 February 2022 21:52 (two years ago) link

the one thing I do find amusing though is when a friend will go on an enthusiastic rant about one moment of a show, to the point where it's built up in my mind as this big, amazing moment, and it lands with a dull thud when I actually see it.

talking vs. listening vs. waiting to talk

OTM

Tapioca Tumbril (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 00:47 (two years ago) link

Some people have the ability to gently inform another person about a subject they know little about, but I wish I knew where a lot of them went in recent years. Many people will just steamroller over you with whatever their take is, either going into excruciating wordbuilding detail, or getting into the loudness war about how much they like it, they really, really like it!

Tapioca Tumbril (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 00:50 (two years ago) link

I had a good friend at my old job who was really good at communicating efficiently and he made an observation once, I wish I could remember the exact wording, about people whose idea of conversation is to just wait unti the other person stops talking and say whatever they are going to say.

Tapioca Tumbril (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 00:53 (two years ago) link

I mean everybody does that to some extent but shouldn't be the whole shebang.

people who can bring people along with them in a conversation are truly marvelous

Nedlene Grendel as Basenji Holmo (map), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 02:48 (two years ago) link

sometimes i feel like i'm doing that but then my fantasy is deflated because inevitably someone's eyes glaze over or they ask a question that's basically like "what are you talking about again?"

Nedlene Grendel as Basenji Holmo (map), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 02:53 (two years ago) link

something to do with my tone of voice and delivery i think, it gets vague and/or hectoring too easily

Nedlene Grendel as Basenji Holmo (map), Tuesday, 8 February 2022 02:54 (two years ago) link

I can more often than not capture people’s attention when I am ceded the floor, but in many other situations there seems to usually be some anxious blowhard who must have to hear the sound of their own voice every few seconds or they will die which tends to mean game over.
