my kid (no vaccs) has managed to avoid it despite his best friend (they are always whispering in each other's faces despite 18 months of me asking him not to) plus three others he is close with at school every day, testing positive - nearly all asymptomatic.

we've tested him and ourselves frequently, and he's picked up other bugs from his sibling, but has never had even a faint positive line.

just realised which thread this is - not bragging, I know it'll come for me eventually!

Currently quarantined awaiting test results (negative rapid). I don't think what I have is covid, but whatever it is was enough to keep my son home from school the past couple days and I called out of work sick for only the second time since this all began. Then, just after getting home from the doctor, I got called to my daughter's school to pick her up because she had been identified as a close contact of another kid who did test positive. So the fun waiting game begins.

Our tests came back negative. Just a bad cold, which is what I had expected. Was going to take my daughter up to the clinic that my wife works at this morning so she could get a test clearing her to return to school. She's entirely asymptomatic so far. However, about an hour ago my wife texted saying that there were over 100 people registered there and people circling the parking lot looking for parking spaces. For perspective, the clinic probably has somewhere between 10-12 examination rooms. It's the busiest she's ever seen it in 10 years with the company and they are short-staffed.

peace, man, Monday, 20 December 2021 17:34 (two years ago) link

Trace how bad was your cold with Omicron? I live in London and also have a cold (sinus headache, slight runny nose, tired and farty) but it’s so slight I’d ignore it on a normal December. I’ve booked a pcr anyway before seeing the folks on the weekend

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 20 December 2021 17:55 (two years ago) link

don't be farting around your folks

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 20 December 2021 18:02 (two years ago) link

lmao

It wasn’t that bad. I had a cold about six weeks ago that was a lot worse. However my symptoms did linger for maybe 5 days? 6? Longer than most colds would have ime.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 20 December 2021 18:36 (two years ago) link

woke up with sore throat, runny nose and headache! All the stores near me are out of test and testing places are appointment only and booked, there is a walk-in spot but that's an hour away via public transportation and their line is over an hour. I really don't have the ability to lose like four hours of my day trying and get tested for this right now.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Monday, 20 December 2021 19:13 (two years ago) link

Feck that sucks. I would proceed as if you have it tbh.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 20 December 2021 20:23 (two years ago) link

Hello this thread. So I'd just spent £100 on Christmas food as a surprise for my dad and my family. I'd had a negative PCR result the day before. My bags were packed and loaded, gifts for my niece and nephew. Just as I was leaving I figured it couldn't hurt to do a quick LFT. Low and behold, two positives in a row.
So looks like I'm spending my whole Christmas break in the same room I work from every day of the year, unless of course by some miracle the PCR turns out negative. I feel alright but increasingly cold and a little achey, just like the onset of a cold would. Just very sad to spend Christmas alone and not see my family again this year.
I'm still kind of mystified about how I could have caught it, mind you. Unless it was in the queue for the PCR (the woman in front of me was convinced she had it, although we kept two metres apart).
Other than that, the toy shop I nipped into yesterday to grab some play-doh for my niblings, there was some cunt with no mask walking around with his son belting out Christmas songs as if to prove a point.

Cheers. On the plus side I have heaps of delicious food in the fridge so I won't go to waste. Also got stacks of books and DVDs to plough through. Plus I've been telling myself it's time I replayed the Witcher on hard mode

Aww man, that sucks. I spent my bday alone in november, but my GF organized a little zoom meeting with a bunch of friends which wasn't so bad - I'd recommend trying something similar. These are weird times, and the solutions are weird but it's better than nothing

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 20:20 (two years ago) link

On my fourth day of being sick. Took a rapid test on day two, came back negative. No PCR appointments available until January. Have one more rapid test, not sure if I should use it.

do it, now’s the time

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 20:39 (two years ago) link

sorry to hear, dl.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 20:39 (two years ago) link

i'm on day 8 of isolating and no PCR result yet (posted saturday morn). sniffles / sinuses were worse today but that's basically the only problem. neighbour got me bread and milk and some tunnocks caramel wafers on monday so i'm fine until friday, when i get out anyway.

i have it lucky, really

koogs, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 20:46 (two years ago) link

(although she did buy 4x1 pints of milk rather than 1x4 pints, which is much cheaper

and i didn't get a saturday paper so i don't really know what's on tv this week)

koogs, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 20:50 (two years ago) link

omg dl! That's awful.
Are they Flowflex lfts? May still be some hope your PCR is ok?

kinder, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 20:50 (two years ago) link

I've been feeling achy and fatigued all day and sneezing a lot. Was feeling rough yesterday and perhaps shouldn't have gone for a 5-6 mile walk on a cold night whilst not in a healthy state. LFT was negative so probably just an old-fashioned cold, but for a while earlier I was expecting that 2nd test line to appear on the strip.

calzino, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 21:11 (two years ago) link

XP yeah kinder they're flowflex. I've never had a positive one till now, but the two I did today were VERY "you have covid" if you see what I mean

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Tuesday, 21 December 2021 22:48 (two years ago) link

Shit calzino hope you're alright.

I have, like, five close friends who've tested positive in the last week and therefore likely to miss Christmoose. Honestly, I think if I were to catch it any time after the 26th or 27th it wouldn't be too bad.

Just hoping I can still play the DJ gig I've been really looking forward to doing on what would hopefully be my freedom day (NYE)

Hope you're ok and can do Christmas 2: Electric Boogaloo a bit later with your fam.
I was supposed to be heading back your way today actually but Covid has affected the plans of the people we were supposed to meet!

kinder, Wednesday, 22 December 2021 10:57 (two years ago) link

That's a silver lining at least! Sorry your plans are being scuppered too.

Just been to do my PCR test l, so waiting on results. I have to say, still not feeling too terrible at this stage. It's very much like a light cold - bit sniffly, bit if a cough, the odd headfoggy moment. I couldn't run a marathon but I certainly don't feel too ill.

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Wednesday, 22 December 2021 11:04 (two years ago) link

dis cut to 7 days retroactive? cause that means i could be out today, as opposed to xmas day

You’d imagine so?

I don't know how reliable LFTs are for this function. But it should also release a great deal of healthcare staff, possibly to Covid wards if appropriate.

kinder, Wednesday, 22 December 2021 11:54 (two years ago) link

People should not end their isolation early if
they are still experiencing symptoms, officials
said
And people ending isolation on day seven
are strongly advised to limit contact with
vulnerable people, not visit crowded or poorly
ventilated spaces, and work from home.

Nerd Ragequit (wins), Wednesday, 22 December 2021 12:02 (two years ago) link

Tracer, yes, it's partly to free up NHS employees who are already isolating, so it definitely applies to people including you!

colette, Wednesday, 22 December 2021 12:09 (two years ago) link

really wish LFTs were more reliable, even though mine was negative it probably would be best not to presume anything. I would have been happy with a positive result tbh, because it would be reassuring to know all it is giving me is cold symptoms and the booster shot from November is getting the upper hand.

calzino, Wednesday, 22 December 2021 12:13 (two years ago) link

> dis cut to 7 days retroactive? cause that means i could be out today, as opposed to xmas day

requires two clear LFTs on conseq days

i'm on day 9, taking a test today and another tomorrow morning (and passing) could mean i'm out of covid jail 16 hours early! Thanks Savid. but it's not like i have plans so...

koogs, Wednesday, 22 December 2021 15:20 (two years ago) link

glad you can leave the house before all the food shops close, at least?

colette, Thursday, 23 December 2021 09:08 (two years ago) link

yeah, i was out of covid jail tomorrow anyway (and have no plans for today) so it doesn't really change anything. although i can get a booster now without waiting 28 days (but will do that after christmas)

koogs, Thursday, 23 December 2021 09:23 (two years ago) link

I've since (predictably enough) tested positive as well. We've told the local authorities and are in quarantine until the 30th, so might get to do NYE with friends here in Portugal at least, if I feel up to it. Mostly hit me like a common cold, probably omnicron - which we'd then be the first ppl to introduce to the country, hope fervently no poor cab driver or pharmacist has gotten it from us.

Dog latin sorry to hear about your situation, hope you have a xmas feast with all that shopping!

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 23 December 2021 09:27 (two years ago) link

I came down with symptoms (v mild sore throat, v mild congestion, and sinus headache) yesterday, so I am probably not leaving today for my parents as planned for Christmas. I hope to get a couple rapid tests from the local pharmacy when they supposedly arrive at noon. CVS is booked out on testing everywhere within 45 minute drive (at least) through Monday (at least).

My wife and I were just joking the other day that she was going to be the last person on earth with covid due to how little she is around others; now there probably is no point in quarantining given our contacts already and the small size of our house. The coordination with local authorities regarding quarantine described by UKers, haphazard and annoying as it may be, seems like a pipe dream here.

ma dmac's fury road (PBKR), Thursday, 23 December 2021 12:32 (two years ago) link

Ffs why do I have to test positive two days before Christmas? I feel lethargic and my throat hurts but I’m not too bad, feels like a mild cold. Just feel bad for my parents and nephews, but obviously I can’t go to see them now.

What have people with dogs done while self isolating? Winston needs a good hour run around every day. I guess I should just try to go at times that seem quiet and try not to bump into anyone? The couple friends who may have helped have gone home for Christmas.

a hoy hoy, Thursday, 23 December 2021 12:45 (two years ago) link

If I had to self-isolate I'd still have to take Douglas out because he won't toilet in the garden because he's very particular about where does his biz. I think as long as you are not going into enclosed public spaces and avoid and keep a safe distance from other people then what's the harm?

I still feel achy and fatigued and with a persistent cough, probably need to take another test just to be sure. Only got a couple of tests left so ordered some more from the NHS. It's sort of amusing that in this shithole country you can order a 7 pack of LFT's for free. I saw the NHS link posted by Daniel last week but didn't truly believe it until I used it just now.

calzino, Thursday, 23 December 2021 12:53 (two years ago) link

the LFT box i got was designed to be posted

that said, there was also a qr code and a AAAA-AAAA-AAAA-AAAA code when i ordered my pick up so took i picture of it thinking they'd be able to read them in the chemist but she ended up just writing them down using pen and paper.

koogs, Thursday, 23 December 2021 13:10 (two years ago) link

I'm the only one in the house with a positive PCR so far but it's abundantly clear that we're all sick, and since we're all vaccinated, we've stopped attempting to isolate me. varying levels of "this sucks" across the four of us but thank God for the vaccines - I've had worse flu than this. I'm maybe on day 4 of being sick? my test results were delayed and time got a little foggy. it is extremely hard to hear the children hurting but they are still in high spirits.
