right. it often last longer, and official advice is to isolate for longer out of an abundance of caution, but if you want to know if you're no longer *highly* infectious without wasting rapid tests, a week is a reasonable amount of time to wait.
― Alba, Sunday, 19 December 2021 07:22 (two years ago) link
based on purely anecdotal data, i have a feeling that boosted folks don't spread omicron at nearly the rate of the non-boosted. my wife got infected eating inside at a restaurant (double-vax requirement, no booster requirement) and my parents got it at an indoor wedding (same deal). But: I still haven't gotten it from my wife despite spending the full day with her unmasked last tuesday (the day she tested positive), and my grandma didn't get it from either my parents or my wife last sunday, when they theoretically would've been infectious. my wife also spent time after her infection last friday with her parents and her aunt & uncle, none of whom have tested positive.
obv this is non-scientific, but the moral of the story is get boosted! and the other moral is that the federal government might've been able to prevent a shitstorm by not sitting on their hands when it was time to open boosters to all adults.

my kid (no vaccs) has managed to avoid it despite his best friend (they are always whispering in each other's faces despite 18 months of me asking him not to) plus three others he is close with at school every day, testing positive - nearly all asymptomatic. we've tested him and ourselves frequently, and he's picked up other bugs from his sibling, but has never had even a faint positive line.

Currently quarantined awaiting test results (negative rapid). I don't think what I have is covid, but whatever it is was enough to keep my son home from school the past couple days and I called out of work sick for only the second time since this all began. Then, just after getting home from the doctor, I got called to my daughter's school to pick her up because she had been identified as a close contact of another kid who did test positive. So the fun waiting game begins.― peace, man, Friday, December 17, 2021 7:23 PM (three days ago) bookmarkflaglink

Our tests came back negative. Just a bad cold, which is what I had expected. Was going to take my daughter up to the clinic that my wife works at this morning so she could get a test clearing her to return to school. She's entirely asymptomatic so far. However, about an hour ago my wife texted saying that there were over 100 people registered there and people circling the parking lot looking for parking spaces. For perspective, the clinic probably has somewhere between 10-12 examination rooms. It's the busiest she's ever seen it in 10 years with the company and they are short-staffed.

Trace how bad was your cold with Omicron? I live in London and also have a cold (sinus headache, slight runny nose, tired and farty) but it’s so slight I’d ignore it on a normal December. I’ve booked a pcr anyway before seeing the folks on the weekend
― Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 20 December 2021 17:55 (two years ago) link
don't be farting around your folks

lmaoIt wasn’t that bad. I had a cold about six weeks ago that was a lot worse. However my symptoms did linger for maybe 5 days? 6? Longer than most colds would have ime.
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 20 December 2021 18:36 (two years ago) link
woke up with sore throat, runny nose and headache! All the stores near me are out of test and testing places are appointment only and booked, there is a walk-in spot but that's an hour away via public transportation and their line is over an hour. I really don't have the ability to lose like four hours of my day trying and get tested for this right now.

Hello this thread. So I'd just spent £100 on Christmas food as a surprise for my dad and my family. I'd had a negative PCR result the day before. My bags were packed and loaded, gifts for my niece and nephew. Just as I was leaving I figured it couldn't hurt to do a quick LFT. Low and behold, two positives in a row. So looks like I'm spending my whole Christmas break in the same room I work from every day of the year, unless of course by some miracle the PCR turns out negative. I feel alright but increasingly cold and a little achey, just like the onset of a cold would. Just very sad to spend Christmas alone and not see my family again this year. I'm still kind of mystified about how I could have caught it, mind you. Unless it was in the queue for the PCR (the woman in front of me was convinced she had it, although we kept two metres apart). Other than that, the toy shop I nipped into yesterday to grab some play-doh for my niblings, there was some cunt with no mask walking around with his son belting out Christmas songs as if to prove a point.

Cheers. On the plus side I have heaps of delicious food in the fridge so I won't go to waste. Also got stacks of books and DVDs to plough through. Plus I've been telling myself it's time I replayed the Witcher on hard mode

Aww man, that sucks. I spent my bday alone in november, but my GF organized a little zoom meeting with a bunch of friends which wasn't so bad - I'd recommend trying something similar. These are weird times, and the solutions are weird but it's better than nothing

On my fourth day of being sick. Took a rapid test on day two, came back negative. No PCR appointments available until January. Have one more rapid test, not sure if I should use it.

sorry to hear, dl.
i'm on day 8 of isolating and no PCR result yet (posted saturday morn). sniffles / sinuses were worse today but that's basically the only problem. neighbour got me bread and milk and some tunnocks caramel wafers on monday so i'm fine until friday, when i get out anyway.
i have it lucky, really

omg dl! That's awful. Are they Flowflex lfts? May still be some hope your PCR is ok?
― kinder, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 20:50 (two years ago) link
I've been feeling achy and fatigued all day and sneezing a lot. Was feeling rough yesterday and perhaps shouldn't have gone for a 5-6 mile walk on a cold night whilst not in a healthy state. LFT was negative so probably just an old-fashioned cold, but for a while earlier I was expecting that 2nd test line to appear on the strip.
― calzino, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 21:11 (two years ago) link
XP yeah kinder they're flowflex. I've never had a positive one till now, but the two I did today were VERY "you have covid" if you see what I mean

Shit calzino hope you're alright.
I have, like, five close friends who've tested positive in the last week and therefore likely to miss Christmoose. Honestly, I think if I were to catch it any time after the 26th or 27th it wouldn't be too bad.
Just hoping I can still play the DJ gig I've been really looking forward to doing on what would hopefully be my freedom day (NYE)

That's a silver lining at least! Sorry your plans are being scuppered too.
Just been to do my PCR test l, so waiting on results. I have to say, still not feeling too terrible at this stage. It's very much like a light cold - bit sniffly, bit if a cough, the odd headfoggy moment. I couldn't run a marathon but I certainly don't feel too ill.

I don't know how reliable LFTs are for this function. But it should also release a great deal of healthcare staff, possibly to Covid wards if appropriate.
― kinder, Wednesday, 22 December 2021 11:54 (two years ago) link
People should not end their isolation early ifthey are still experiencing symptoms, officialssaidAnd people ending isolation on day sevenare strongly advised to limit contact withvulnerable people, not visit crowded or poorlyventilated spaces, and work from home.
― Nerd Ragequit (wins), Wednesday, 22 December 2021 12:02 (two years ago) link
Tracer, yes, it's partly to free up NHS employees who are already isolating, so it definitely applies to people including you!
― colette, Wednesday, 22 December 2021 12:09 (two years ago) link
really wish LFTs were more reliable, even though mine was negative it probably would be best not to presume anything. I would have been happy with a positive result tbh, because it would be reassuring to know all it is giving me is cold symptoms and the booster shot from November is getting the upper hand.
― calzino, Wednesday, 22 December 2021 12:13 (two years ago) link
> dis cut to 7 days retroactive? cause that means i could be out today, as opposed to xmas day
requires two clear LFTs on conseq days
