you don't know what happens between now and seeing your family, so i would definitely save one for you for immediately before family time. arguably not necessary to save one for her for then assuming she's all clear on tuesday.

caek iā€™m not sure thatā€™s right about contagiousness only lasting a week? unless iā€™m misreading you.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 17 December 2021 20:31 (two years ago) link

right. it often last longer, and official advice is to isolate for longer out of an abundance of caution, but if you want to know if you're no longer *highly* infectious without wasting rapid tests, a week is a reasonable amount of time to wait.

š¯” š¯”˛š¯”¢š¯”Ø (caek), Friday, 17 December 2021 20:52 (two years ago) link

(before you deploy one of your rapid tests.)

š¯” š¯”˛š¯”¢š¯”Ø (caek), Friday, 17 December 2021 20:52 (two years ago) link

so just to be clear: i'm not saying you're all clear after a week and you should hit the clubs/cough on your in laws. i'm saying if you're curious and you have a spare rapid test, a week is the *first* time it wouldn't be a complete waste to take the test.

That's such bastard luck Tracer. How are the symptoms?

10 weeks after my positive test and I'm still really struggling with tiredness and crippling headaches. I've been back at work but I'm a bit of a shell. Ffs. Hoping Christmas and lots of sleep will see it off for good.

All the best to Voodoo and Koogs.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 17 December 2021 21:47 (two years ago) link

I'm feeling fine, thanks, but going through the motions anyway.

the pcr test turned up. i checked at 6 and it wasn't there, checked at 9 and it was, but too late to do anything about it today. my 10 days isolation will likely be up* before i find out i didn't need to. so it goes.

(* Christmas Eve. i hope nobody was expecting any Christmas presents)

koogs, Friday, 17 December 2021 21:54 (two years ago) link

appreciate the advice, caek (and thanks chinaski for the well-wishes). it seems to be somewhat of a moot point because my parents have tested positive, likely from attending a wedding on saturday night where many of the guests have tested positive (everyone is mild so far).

not much to do but wait things out.

ah damn vc.

i'm really sorry to hear that Chinaski, that's shit. 10 weeks ago must have been delta, right? i suspect i've got omicron and the symptoms have been mild. like a cold. i really hope you start feeling right.

Currently quarantined awaiting test results (negative rapid). I don't think what I have is covid, but whatever it is was enough to keep my son home from school the past couple days and I called out of work sick for only the second time since this all began. Then, just after getting home from the doctor, I got called to my daughter's school to pick her up because she had been identified as a close contact of another kid who did test positive. So the fun waiting game begins.

Got our boosters on Monday, negative covid tests on Wednesday, wife was feeling under the weather, we assumed it was the effects of the booster. Boarded the plane to Portugal, got steadily worse, took a test when we got to our place - wife has covid. Christmas cancelled, families on both sides that were going to meet us have to cancel flights and we don't even get to spend christmas at home with our cats. Not great.

I think (this is the case in the UK at least) youā€™re meant to start counting from when you first test positive or first show symptoms, though - not from when you think you got exposed.

Best wishes to all, and commiserations to Daniel. My wife got it a couple of weeks ago with very mild symptoms. Her home isolation also thrown plans for a loop. I didnā€™t even try to keep distance from her, tbh, but have stayed negative. I wouldnā€™t recommend this course of action but I guess Iā€™m just lazy.

Alba, Sunday, 19 December 2021 07:22 (two years ago) link

based on purely anecdotal data, i have a feeling that boosted folks don't spread omicron at nearly the rate of the non-boosted. my wife got infected eating inside at a restaurant (double-vax requirement, no booster requirement) and my parents got it at an indoor wedding (same deal). But: I still haven't gotten it from my wife despite spending the full day with her unmasked last tuesday (the day she tested positive), and my grandma didn't get it from either my parents or my wife last sunday, when they theoretically would've been infectious. my wife also spent time after her infection last friday with her parents and her aunt & uncle, none of whom have tested positive.

obv this is non-scientific, but the moral of the story is get boosted! and the other moral is that the federal government might've been able to prevent a shitstorm by not sitting on their hands when it was time to open boosters to all adults.

yeah my immediate family and mother in law were all sharing meals w me and moving on top of each other for a week and none of them appear to have gotten it despite my testing positive five days straight

imago, Monday, 20 December 2021 15:46 (two years ago) link

my kid (no vaccs) has managed to avoid it despite his best friend (they are always whispering in each other's faces despite 18 months of me asking him not to) plus three others he is close with at school every day, testing positive - nearly all asymptomatic.

we've tested him and ourselves frequently, and he's picked up other bugs from his sibling, but has never had even a faint positive line.

Our tests came back negative. Just a bad cold, which is what I had expected. Was going to take my daughter up to the clinic that my wife works at this morning so she could get a test clearing her to return to school. She's entirely asymptomatic so far. However, about an hour ago my wife texted saying that there were over 100 people registered there and people circling the parking lot looking for parking spaces. For perspective, the clinic probably has somewhere between 10-12 examination rooms. It's the busiest she's ever seen it in 10 years with the company and they are short-staffed.

peace, man, Monday, 20 December 2021 17:34 (two years ago) link

Trace how bad was your cold with Omicron? I live in London and also have a cold (sinus headache, slight runny nose, tired and farty) but itā€™s so slight Iā€™d ignore it on a normal December. Iā€™ve booked a pcr anyway before seeing the folks on the weekend

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 20 December 2021 17:55 (two years ago) link

don't be farting around your folks

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 20 December 2021 18:02 (two years ago) link

lmao

It wasnā€™t that bad. I had a cold about six weeks ago that was a lot worse. However my symptoms did linger for maybe 5 days? 6? Longer than most colds would have ime.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 20 December 2021 18:36 (two years ago) link

woke up with sore throat, runny nose and headache! All the stores near me are out of test and testing places are appointment only and booked, there is a walk-in spot but that's an hour away via public transportation and their line is over an hour. I really don't have the ability to lose like four hours of my day trying and get tested for this right now.

(ā€¢ĢŖā—¸) (carne asada), Monday, 20 December 2021 19:13 (two years ago) link

Feck that sucks. I would proceed as if you have it tbh.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 20 December 2021 20:23 (two years ago) link

Hello this thread. So I'd just spent Ā£100 on Christmas food as a surprise for my dad and my family. I'd had a negative PCR result the day before. My bags were packed and loaded, gifts for my niece and nephew. Just as I was leaving I figured it couldn't hurt to do a quick LFT. Low and behold, two positives in a row.
So looks like I'm spending my whole Christmas break in the same room I work from every day of the year, unless of course by some miracle the PCR turns out negative. I feel alright but increasingly cold and a little achey, just like the onset of a cold would. Just very sad to spend Christmas alone and not see my family again this year.
I'm still kind of mystified about how I could have caught it, mind you. Unless it was in the queue for the PCR (the woman in front of me was convinced she had it, although we kept two metres apart).
Other than that, the toy shop I nipped into yesterday to grab some play-doh for my niblings, there was some cunt with no mask walking around with his son belting out Christmas songs as if to prove a point.

Aww man, that sucks. I spent my bday alone in november, but my GF organized a little zoom meeting with a bunch of friends which wasn't so bad - I'd recommend trying something similar. These are weird times, and the solutions are weird but it's better than nothing

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 20:20 (two years ago) link

On my fourth day of being sick. Took a rapid test on day two, came back negative. No PCR appointments available until January. Have one more rapid test, not sure if I should use it.

i'm on day 8 of isolating and no PCR result yet (posted saturday morn). sniffles / sinuses were worse today but that's basically the only problem. neighbour got me bread and milk and some tunnocks caramel wafers on monday so i'm fine until friday, when i get out anyway.

i have it lucky, really
