The Starfleet Admiral having to get in a "oooooh, you bad boys used that unauthorized tech to do the thing I told you to do" moment every episode, yeesh.

Need a series where Pike, Book, Grudge and Emperor Georgiou galavant across the galaxy.

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 06:21 (two years ago) link

i really do need that Pike series like, NOW

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 07:22 (two years ago) link

With Yeoh gone and Book still just a bit player, I'm not sure there's any charisma left in the main characters. Stamets and Tig Notaro show promise but their Whedon banter has its limits.

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 08:34 (two years ago) link

I stopped watching this a few episodes into the third season - we just forgot to keep watching it. And then I started DS9 (for the first time!) instead and it was so much better. Point being, this thread isn't really persuading me to try again. Or I'll wait for the Pike show. I feel a bit underwhelmed that the retro white guy lead show is the one I'm really looking forward to.

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 10:10 (two years ago) link

Admittedly I don't get Pike's appeal but the other prestige, live action Trek show centered around a captain also has awful writing (sorry Trayce) so I have low hopes for Pike.

Shower Farts (Leee), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 16:20 (two years ago) link

I am very angry with that latest episode. And so it would seem is everyone else, what a low IMDB rating.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 16 December 2021 00:20 (two years ago) link

I did love that they Redshirted someone 5 milliseconds in though.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 16 December 2021 00:21 (two years ago) link

trayce . . . you got this

mookieproof, Thursday, 16 December 2021 04:06 (two years ago) link

i m d b…. rating?

mh, Friday, 17 December 2021 00:45 (two years ago) link

star trek: let's do this

mookieproof, Friday, 17 December 2021 02:05 (two years ago) link

Third episode of the Kelpien dilithium arc, pure hate-watch now.

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 17 December 2021 04:45 (two years ago) link

i was ok w this episode? way less selfhelp at least

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 17 December 2021 07:20 (two years ago) link

Yes I liked this one. I feel like I missed something re the very end bit where Tarka was going on about using anger productively and then he fingered a scar on the back of his neck. What did I not infer there, it is driving me bonkers.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 18 December 2021 01:28 (two years ago) link

he was presumably once an emerald chain slave like book and the late andorian dude (who was played by the tilly actress's irl husband)

always suspected the digital millennium copyright act would have far-reaching consequences

mookieproof, Saturday, 18 December 2021 02:39 (two years ago) link

also i totally love how incestuous all these canadian-filmed shows are with their actors

like has anyone yet been in *all* of bsg/orphan black/the expanse/letterkenny/disco?

mookieproof, Saturday, 18 December 2021 03:00 (two years ago) link

Ah yes! Thks Mookie!

Haven't watched the latest but should we talk about Gray's undercut mullet in the meantime?

Shower Farts (Leee), Thursday, 23 December 2021 22:03 (two years ago) link

another episode, another character with an emotional crisis who has to be comforted and told that they got this before pulling through to save the day. tbf, i wasn’t expecting it to be the fucking ship’s computer’s turn

bro, this show sucks

mookieproof, Saturday, 25 December 2021 02:12 (two years ago) link

This season they've managed to make each episode half good and then half terrible, boring, therapy session.

Previous Trek had plenty of talking about feelings but they spent three seasons making all of these characters awful so WGAF.

papal hotwife (milo z), Saturday, 25 December 2021 02:20 (two years ago) link

then they do a space action sequence and it's like "oh you wanted this to be a Star Wars TV show"

papal hotwife (milo z), Saturday, 25 December 2021 02:21 (two years ago) link

xxp the huge bit there being that they established a crazy new ai life form that has untold knowledge and just forgot about it for half the season

I feel like there are three scripting teams and one is editorial doing “more feelings” and the first few episodes were done by people who were told “don’t actually use material we’ve got”

mh, Saturday, 25 December 2021 03:46 (two years ago) link

sir i must apologise, i spoke rashly during the earlier crisis because i have an emotional backstory, here is my emotional back story, now is a very good time to tell it to you, during this new crisis, it will only take 20 seconds because emotions are actually pretty simple cause and effect

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Saturday, 25 December 2021 04:28 (two years ago) link

I actually liked this one! It had a very TNG vibe to it, if nothing else, and the bathos was kept to a minimum IMO.

Shower Farts (Leee), Sunday, 26 December 2021 19:15 (two years ago) link

fair is fair; this one is pretty solid

no one says ‘you got this’, for one thing

mookieproof, Thursday, 30 December 2021 23:06 (two years ago) link

The Burn must have really fucked up the Klingons since they still haven’t made an appearance.

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 31 December 2021 04:26 (two years ago) link

yeah this was a pretty decent episode
always glad when ole d-crone pops up

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 31 December 2021 05:30 (two years ago) link

...and it's back to cringe. That slow clap scene...

Rabbit Pen Warren (Leee), Sunday, 2 January 2022 23:01 (two years ago) link

Did I spot a Ferengi in this ep? He had pointed ears though which was odd.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 2 January 2022 23:07 (two years ago) link

"I feel seen" - the writing is just embarrassingly bad

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 2 January 2022 23:25 (two years ago) link

like i must say that i genuinely enjoy watching this show but part of that enjoyment is based on laughing at the dumb bits - and the computer saying “i feel seen” was probably the pick of this one for me

i think of myself as a sensitive respectful individual but there is something about the way this show “does” “feelings” that makes me feel like a grouchy right-wing knuckle-dragger

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Sunday, 2 January 2022 23:28 (two years ago) link

It's clumsy and unnatural. Instead of the sentient AI just steadily becoming part of the crew until they realize "oh shit, it's a being" they make it a stilted B-plot and finish up by telling instead of showing with the "I feel seen."

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 2 January 2022 23:34 (two years ago) link

I’m pretty sure that was a Ferengi in the Federation vote, and possibly another one who was tending bar at some point.

Rabbit Pen Warren (Leee), Monday, 3 January 2022 04:52 (two years ago) link

one month passes...

first ep back after season break was pretty enjoyable! only one “you got this” & it wasnt even bc someone was sad

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 12 February 2022 04:07 (two years ago) link

really liked the makeup on the mac tonight/ max-headroom-looking broker

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 12 February 2022 04:20 (two years ago) link

I kept thinking of G'Kar from B5. It felt like there were loads of older Trek refs in this ep which made me realise how little of that Disco has been doing.

Some ferengis in the background, a shapshifter (who turned into a tribble, lol), payment with gold pressed latinum, and I think one camera pan went past an alien who looked the same as Morn from the DS9 bar. I'm sure there was more.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 12 February 2022 04:49 (two years ago) link

yeah there def was a lot!

i also liked “Oh Wow” and her fight scene, also felt very old Trek, like a scheme dreamed up by jim & bones

mookieproof, Tuesday, 15 February 2022 16:08 (two years ago) link

sad to sour the generally posi vibes here but i found the first ep back lame & snoozy esp for a mid-season premiere or whatever -

but most recent one was ok? like, pleasingly overwrought i would say. the DSP or whatever is a pretty soft focus Season Threat tho - I want to be feeling v’ger/voyage home probe levels of unknowable cosmic power vibes but it just isn’t landing - although this ep kind of felt like it was building to something i guess? but hard to get real excited about this season, bring back that nutso Disco energy, it was weird but at least it was something

also lol at returning character reveal that leaves me squinting and going “oh yeah i kind of remember that person?” - the second-tier characters are so epically under-written on this show, it is kind of avant garde - like the shuttlecraft spat between beard guy and non-beard guy - I kind of blank as soon as they start talking, because you know it’s an anaemic fifth-priority subplot that will be resolved with no consequences

ok i have thought too much now about this dumb show that i still watch and like

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Friday, 18 February 2022 22:53 (two years ago) link

new episode bugged me a little bc the mirroring of Michaels situation on her ship & Bookers situation on his ship like do u seee every 5 minutes ughhhhh WE GET IT

but fine otherwise

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 18 February 2022 23:41 (two years ago) link

absurd that they didn’t open fire

hate it when the needs of the many are outweighed by the needs of this one guy people find likeable

mookieproof, Saturday, 19 February 2022 02:26 (two years ago) link

am I going crazy or did they not try to explain to Book the crucial plot point they uncovered at the end of the prior episode about what the device was

mh, Saturday, 19 February 2022 16:26 (two years ago) link

i thought they mentioned they’d sent him the info and then there was a bit of dialogue where he said “that’s interesting but if doesn’t make any difference”

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Saturday, 19 February 2022 20:34 (two years ago) link

yeah, they did

i have no faith that they'll wrap it up well, but i do respect the turn they've taken with this species 10c. there are good storytelling reasons why humans/vulcans/klingons/romulans/etc. have more or less the same level of technology, but they really should have been running into civilizations that are much more advanced -- and not necessarily friendly -- way more often. (and without turning them into easily thwarted clowns, as voyager did with the borg.)

mookieproof, Saturday, 19 February 2022 23:10 (two years ago) link

I think I have a pretty low tolerance for characters acting well below real-life stupidity as a cheap and easy way to raise the stakes and dramatic tension, so I have yet to finish the second episode back.

Mobile Suit Gundam Style (Leee), Saturday, 26 February 2022 19:30 (two years ago) link

this last one was all about everyone's feelings again

tbh i just want a show about kovach; everyone else (except grudge) can fuck off

mookieproof, Saturday, 26 February 2022 19:37 (two years ago) link

star trek: therapy

i had so hoped we’d moved on from all these fucking feeelings uuuuuugh

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 26 February 2022 19:42 (two years ago) link

I wonder if Species 10C (?) have feelings

Maybe the series is gonna be resolved by Discovery telling them all about feelings for the first time and they’ll feel so fuckin seen that they’ll call off the DMA and do yoga together

I didn’t mind this ep

(but lol at the “Saru’s farewell to beard guy” scene, I couldn’t even remember what his position was - I guess maybe the actor took a break and it was just housekeeping but honestly these guys are so anonymous that it would have been better to just handwave the crew change with one line of dialogue)

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Saturday, 26 February 2022 21:33 (two years ago) link

that was either reese or bryce iirc. happily, removing one of them means they can no longer have made-up disagreements about strategy
