I couldn't give a toss about what somebody else dreamt about last night. Yeah, I'm sure it was amazing and surreal. Keep that nonsense to yourself.

The golden globes. And all other awards shows.

The Matrix. I know this franchise means a lot to a lot of people, so please know that I mean no harm. I saw the first film on opening night, was bored stiff, and have never looked back.

i don't do Spotify or Netflix so all these things just pass me by

(it's mostly a bandwidth thing, both bytes and time)

I haven't used Spotify or Netflix before. I am afraid of my phone and mostly try to ignore it. (I am sorry if my comment on the BIRDS thread was totally irrelevant.)

I think I don't care about what people don't care about but I'm worried that might open some kind of portal to another dimension where everything is controps or something

it's always odd how narrow the bands for this are - my brother is two years younger than me and his memories are different from mine (he-man was never a thing for me, for instance)

there is one answer in this thread that is particularly unlikeable, but we are to keep that kind of thing to ourselves, right?

The Rat Pack.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 21:37 (two years ago) link

there are two Rat Packs... the original Bogart/Bacall/David Niven one, and then those laddish Las Vegas drunks and that's likely who you're referring to

(I'm not sure if I'm afraid of Apple or my phone. The part that is definitely the phone is how it has become an extension of oneself. I am also afraid of how Facebook seems to have invented or marketed all of the programming languages that developers want to learn and use. I think it has been a decade since I stopped buyig from Amazon, but I still need to use AWS at work and probably indirectly at home.)

whether die hard is a christmas movie or not. every year with this.

fits along with "how do you pronounce gif" and "should the toilet paper roll go over or under" where people online act like it's a big debate but only those on one side of the debate (yes/hard g/over) care to talk about it at all. and they will yell about it like their life depends on it.

, Saturday, 25 December 2021 09:17 (two years ago) link

Yeah I have Die Hard muted on Twitter for this reason. It’s hard to believe anyone actually cares; it’s just an artefact of social media loneliness I think.

Alba, Saturday, 25 December 2021 11:37 (two years ago) link

also all that A Serbian Film/Irreversible/Come and See/Human Centipede "is a christmas movie" type hilarity wasn't really that funny the first time.

It seems to have peaked in Google queries

Though actually that may be skewed by Christmas 2021 not being over yet.

Reacting narkily to die hard is a christmas movie is in fact a christmas movie

I know this is heresy around here, but I just don't care about Joan Didion.

heh! well I presume at least you've tried reading her, Table. I summarily dismissed her as a melt after watching 10 mins of the netflix doc on her!

calzino, Saturday, 25 December 2021 16:08 (two years ago) link

If the early essays and fiction formed your impressions, I can imagine recoiling from her, hence why I tirelessly advocate for her essays after 1980, which I read way before STB.

I've tried. The writing is okay, not my cuppa. Her politics are abhorrent, and continued to be abhorrent long after her supposed left turn.

it made me so irate to see some young author on twitter lump her in with bell hooks in a "you should feel no shame about discovering these people after their deaths" tweet. i can't imagine two more polar opposites in spirit. didion on a quest to empty everything out, hooks on a quest for abundance.

same tbh, but I'm curious about Bell Hooks and couldn't gaf about t'other one!

Dialectics, baby. I can hang with those binaries.

However, Didion at her best doesn't empty anything out; she fills in detail after detail.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 25 December 2021 19:47 (two years ago) link

Weird how these bite/tweet size quotes from both of them ended up as a way to celebrate their passing. Both as guides on living/paying attention to the world around you.

The Didion did indeed end up feeding a more nihilistic side of the person making the tweet, whereas books fed something more politically hopeful.
