Sonic Youth is one of the greatest American rock bands and have an amazingly high quality catalog

this is definitely my least favorite ilm thread of all time, the whole premise brings out the most annoying aspects of all of us

I think Sonic Youth is a band best discovered as a teenager when you're coming out of your Pink Floyd phase

(i will never load all posts to witness whatever dumb condescending bullshit i posted 8 years ago or w/e)

have you heard "Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Handcream" recently, though?

― So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, December 13, 2021 7:49 AM

honestly no, but who cares? it's a rambling incoherent mess. very much the zeitgeist of my discrepancy with the band in general.

this is definitely my least favorite ilm thread of all time, the whole premise brings out the most annoying aspects of all of us

oh come on, friend. it's not that serious and i'm really happy you like sonic youth — honestly, that's great! i'm personally just a little tired of hearing about how innovative and different and omg MINDBLOWING they were when the records sound like none of those of things to me. but if it is to you, awesome!

please don't refer to me as (Austin), Monday, 13 December 2021 16:06 (two years ago) link

it's not about sonic youth, i've felt that way for a long time.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 13 December 2021 16:11 (two years ago) link

i mean no one has to like sonic youth! it's not the law.

tbf, if people enjoy this thread, I can just not click on it. But, here in 2021, are there really any controversial music opinions anymore? I feel like all the sacred cows have been repeatedly slaughtered

rob, Monday, 13 December 2021 16:23 (two years ago) link

maybe we should lock this and start a "can someone show me a NEW controversial opinion?" thread

Sgt. Pepper is better than (current) critics say!

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Monday, 13 December 2021 16:54 (two years ago) link

yeah I was gonna add a caveat that there are obvs offensive opinions one could post, though even there, apart from arbitrary nonsense invented to prove the point (right-handed people can't sing, etc), how new would they be? "Geir-esque" suggests not very

rob, Monday, 13 December 2021 16:57 (two years ago) link

Tbf, opinions don't have to be new to be controversial.

A thread where you can vent your unpopular opinions without necessarily getting into in-depth discussion with people who are highly invested in the opposite pov seems fine to me.

treat the gelignite tenderly for me (Sund4r), Monday, 13 December 2021 17:18 (two years ago) link

My point was only that non-new controversial opinions are boring (to me), not that newness is a required condition. fwiw I think imago's hyped albums you want to diss thread might serve more of a purpose than this broader thread. Anyway, I don't like the ILE versions of this thread either, so clearly it's something about me not nec the thread

all christmas music is inherently bad . . . not just subjectively either. it ruins societies and i'm sure if pure evil manifested itself into human form, that would be pure evil's musical preference.

the real problem is radio programming

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 21:33 (two years ago) link

fair point, but why is spotify recommending it to me when i've never even searched for christmas music . . . ever?

sorry, spotify. i like good music.

please don't refer to me as (Austin), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 21:36 (two years ago) link

hence pre-radio Christmas music and Christmas-adjacent music - like trad carols and Tallis and Handel and a few others - is okay.

but generally I would agree that Christmas music written post-1943* can die in fire

* = yes, that date is cherry-picked specifically to include the only two 20th-century Christmas songs that are acceptable in my ears

which are also the saddest

and also among the best

they are, of course "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas"

bittersweet sad Christmas songs are best

fuck Frosty and Rudolph and Santa 4evs

Mark Antonym (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 21:42 (two years ago) link

"Merry Christmas Baby" (1947) is one of the great standards of the 20th Century.

katebishopfan616 (morrisp), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 21:47 (two years ago) link

Well, for Charles Brown I think one can move the goalpost to 1947

The boundary can be fuzzy as long as we don't get into Whamistan
