I just wanna say, though I think this is a minority view, that thinking of this show as being about awful people who you are supposed to hate is the wrong way to watch it. To me every character is sympathetic. Which does not mean "you like them." But it does mean you can find their way into your minds, literally sympathizing with them.

Lots of comparison upthread to Gatsby, and I think that's apt. Of course there are ways in which Gatsby is the villain of the piece. But if the point of the novel were "Gatsby sucks, so I wrote a book about how much Gatsby sucks," it would not be a very good novel. Yes "The Great Gatsby" has bitter irony to it but what makes irony irony is that there's a paradox to it -- he IS great, and also small. Again, if it were just "huh huh he thinks he's so great but he sucks," it would not be irony, it would be mockery, and it would be much less of a book.

One can of course write a great book whose main goal is to catalogue the damage wealthy people leave in their wake, often intentionally -- you could for instance write "The Jungle" but that's a fundamentally different kind of thing than what TGG and Succession are.

yes but 'comfrey' is totally the type of name a britisher would invent, sort of like 'cumberbatch' xp

its true its a british name

Lol that was a good finale

not sure i even have this right? caroline, on her wedding night, takes a call from her ex husband & agrees over the course of that call to vote w logan to sell to gojo thus destroying the super majority the kids would have had to block ? & it didnt occur to logan the need to do this until tom tipped him off ???

Not quite but type end result is the same. The only reason the kids have any power in the company is because of the divorce agreement and some bylaws that were agreed to. Logan went to her to ask her to allow for a revision to those bylaws and she agreed for whatever reason (well I think she now thinks her kids should be trying to succeed in their own). So that supermajority provision is now gone. Tom told Logan about this; I doubt Logan even realized it was there it sounded like it was buried so deep in some contract no one knew it was there.

As for why Tom did this, Tom realizes that success in business cannot rode in blood alone. This isn’t a monarchy. Tom got access via Shiv but wants to prove his own value; Logan and Mr Vice Media probably guaranteed him some powerful position in exchange.

akm, Monday, 13 December 2021 04:03 (two years ago) link

it’s been clear for multiple episodes that Logan has been negotiating with Scary Poppins

she wanted to keep (get?) that english residence, the Onion was sniffing around for a MBE or some other title horseshit, and the kids were all “oh, what if new stepdad rips her off?” instead of asking what Logan would want in return for these favors

he’s been likely doing what he always does, stringing a negotiation along until he has something that absolutely
benefits him, and then instantly closing. probably just made a quick call to say he’d give her all that if she removed the supermajority clause and closed it out

mh, Monday, 13 December 2021 04:06 (two years ago) link

oh shit I didn't realize Tom called Greg "Sporus" in that conversation

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 13 December 2021 04:12 (two years ago) link

shiv’s conversation with her mom was this missed opportunity to read between the lines and ask questions because it was made clear
1. Mom perhaps didn’t care much about parenting, but her stated intention in letting Logan have the kids was that they’d legally hold on to part of the company
2. dear old mum and Peter would so much like to maintain their position, and perhaps better it, in british society
3. Mom’s marriage was triggering a re-evaluation of the divorce agreement

Mom teased it away for Peter. Logan even said as much in the end to Roman, the seat sniffer gets his pound of flesh what do you get or whatever.

The wily old coot eluded them once again. Curses!

I love how it set us up to sort of be rooting for the kids — unified at last! — but then when they get fucked it's like, oh yeah, they all had that coming.

Did Tom purely fuck Shiv over? Or make a hedge to preserve their only shot? Suppose "Sporus" implies the former?

Comfrey showing ken's cards on the Variety piece immediately after he mopes away. Saving his life only to bury him.

accordion folder full of Zoobooks (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 13 December 2021 06:02 (two years ago) link

Thinking back on it (and rereading the above posts), Tom definitely fucked Shiv over. Couldn't square posts about Logan's drawn out negotiation with a rapidfire clause removal based purely off Tom's info. Suppose there's a chance that such a removal was always possible after Logan learned of it from the 3? So there is still a chance Tom knows who gets fucked and hedged?

Were Logan's spermshakes foreshadowing him drinking their milkshakes?

accordion folder full of Zoobooks (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 13 December 2021 06:22 (two years ago) link

LORD

I need tp lie down that was stressful!!Awesome finale

Tom fucked Shiv - when she called a d told him what was going down & he asked where he fit in she handwaved him away & that was the final straw

Logan said he would remember him for offering himself up so he cashed in his chips and told Logan what they were planning & tbat they were headed to him

obv Logan had already been putting wheels in motion but Tom either helped put it on lock or motivated Logan to get Caroline to make the final ok or whatever

I wonder if Logan couldn't have sewn the thing up after the kids arrived anyway. It seems their plan for a coup had a fatal flaw independent of Tom, and that undercuts the betrayal and Tom's gain. He is still married to the coup.

accordion folder full of Zoobooks (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 13 December 2021 08:14 (two years ago) link

Seems unlikely Tom will get what he wants out of this. Could see him actually going to jail in the end, maybe at the close of season 4. Shiv knows where the bodies are buried after all.

the van ride to take down their dad was the happiest they'd ever been.

lol i read something this am that jeremy strong had the show build him a pillar to sit on as he had his breakdown with shiv and roman but it wasn't working, he claimed he felt like a failure, and then sat on the ground and boom knew they had something. i will say great acting on all three of the actors part though

Greg was needed for the chat access then?

i didn't totally follow that conversation. Greg is on some slack channel that waystar employees are on but I couldn't sort what it was that he'd learned there.

akm, Monday, 13 December 2021 14:42 (two years ago) link

he learned that all the waystar execs were in italy, complaining about the hard pillows to their assistants, but that was knowledge the kids wanted, i dont think greg did anything for tom tom just likes greg
