I devoured that profile and I know the New Yorker fact checkers don’t play but… there is no way Jeremy Strong held a boom mic for Anthony Hopkins speech on Amistad. That’s a crucial union crew position and they wouldn’t have let him do that, this has been been driving me crazy!

i had the same thought! You don't get to hold heavy hardware over the head of an oscar winner just because you write letters.

At first, I had the same thought as you -- why couldn't it be a cut scene from the garden party in the episode we just saw? -- but the details sounded too much like a toast at a wedding. It's described as a scene with "a hundred extras, all seated and cooking in linen suits and sheath dresses," at which Shiv is "delivering some remarks she has been asked to give at the last minute," and where her siblings, including Kendall, are "seated next to her." First, it seems unlikely that the show would've entirely cut a fairly big set-piece like that. Second, it doesn't make sense, plot-wise, given that Kendall is exiled from the pre-wedding festivities almost as soon as he arrives.

yeah good point thanks

Haven't read the hidden text ^^ yet, but am vaguely recalling a length profile of an actor right before they were knocked off a show, maybe The Sopranos.

@rogermexico - fair, I'm rooting for Jerri too, I guess. How long til we get an episode showing how awful she really is?

i mean she’s worked for Logan Roy in a senior capacity for a long time and seems to sleep at night but she seems like maybe a striver who has earned it and doesn’t go out of her way to abuse the staff

I'd forgotten about him hitting the grandchild in S1. The "let me use my grandson as a food taster and torture my son with the fact that I'm prepared to do that" was still breathtaking though.

I'm not convinced Kendall is dead, but the whole scene with the pool reminded me of The Graduate.

Hey, in case you weren’t already feeling old today, I just heard an intern say they loved Succession’s “new weekly drop model” and that it was a smart way to get people hooked.

Dunno, but like I said upthread I think the contents of Logan's will are going to come into play at some point.

Just realised that none of the main characters seem to have any real friends. Ken's relationship with Stewie in season one is probably the closest we've seen to an actual friendship

comfrey sort of makes sense since it's a show written by britishers?

I'm a Britisher and I've never before in my life heard the name, as a first or last name.

me neither

kinder, Saturday, 11 December 2021 23:55 (two years ago) link

I just wanna say, though I think this is a minority view, that thinking of this show as being about awful people who you are supposed to hate is the wrong way to watch it. To me every character is sympathetic. Which does not mean "you like them." But it does mean you can find their way into your minds, literally sympathizing with them.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 12 December 2021 00:10 (two years ago) link

Lots of comparison upthread to Gatsby, and I think that's apt. Of course there are ways in which Gatsby is the villain of the piece. But if the point of the novel were "Gatsby sucks, so I wrote a book about how much Gatsby sucks," it would not be a very good novel. Yes "The Great Gatsby" has bitter irony to it but what makes irony irony is that there's a paradox to it -- he IS great, and also small. Again, if it were just "huh huh he thinks he's so great but he sucks," it would not be irony, it would be mockery, and it would be much less of a book.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 12 December 2021 00:12 (two years ago) link

One can of course write a great book whose main goal is to catalogue the damage wealthy people leave in their wake, often intentionally -- you could for instance write "The Jungle" but that's a fundamentally different kind of thing than what TGG and Succession are.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 12 December 2021 00:13 (two years ago) link

yes but 'comfrey' is totally the type of name a britisher would invent, sort of like 'cumberbatch' xp
