The frustrating thing is listening back to my mix and hearing a bunch of mistakes and slightly sloppy transitions. It almost definitely didn't matter on the night and I doubt anyone noticed, but it makes me cringe to listen back to.

I've had to come to terms with the fact that 30 seconds of imperfection in a multi-hour set gets massively magnified in my mind vs what others hear. If someone got so deep into listening to a set and was paying such close attention to notice, that's pretty impressive and unusual!

love seeing how other people on here incorporate some of the same tracks I've been spinning in different contexts and with different mixing approaches

15 seconds can't mess it up if you're crushing it overall and I hear amazing sets in this thread on the regular, have since it's inception

I'm not really a vinyl DJ but I do own a fair few records. Back in December I thought it would be fun to cart a few of my favourites down my local pub and play them at unsuspecting drinkers.

It goes without saying that playing vinyl is a lot more of a tactile experience than wavs or mp3s. There are advantages to both: With digital it's a lot easier to do those smooth, seamless transitions and you can have fun with loops, hot cues etc. Whereas with records it's just you and the plastic: you have to 'feel' your way through things and unless you're a very seasoned beatmatcher or scratcher, it can be a bit like working blindfolded - daunting, but also more sensual. Rather than working through a list of track titles, BPMs and keys, it's back to working with physical objects, scrabbling through your crate, checking the sleeve or label to make sure you're cueing the right track at the right speed, finding the exact right point where the track begins, and finding creative ways to blend them together.

I'm not going to put this mix up on Mixcloud, but I did want to share it with my ILX chums because, as well as being more tactile, playing records is a much deeper, more personal experience. These artifacts are more than media. They hold memories. A lot of the music I played that evening came from the record collections of my parents, and even my grandparents (who were huge lovers of jazz, Motown, Latin and French music). Other records are my own but have acquired some sort of personal acumen because I've invested in them and allowed them to take up real estate in my house.

So here it is. A selection of music in two parts, ranging from folk ambient, 70s porn groove, sixties jazz, Argentinian psychedelia, Balearic, Phili disco, NYC punk, music from Somalia, Tanzania and South Africa, and then moving on to more modern electronic dance gubbins.

It's not especially well mixed together, and there are a few moments where someone walking into the garden area would open the door so hard it knocked the decks. Still, it's a deeply personal selection and an absolute corking array of great music (in my own humble opinion, of course).

Thanks Jacobm I've come to realise only recently that even when I'm playing digital, I guess my unconscious calling card is that I don't tend to stick to one style but make diagonal connections between them which make sense to me but might seem a bit eccentric to others. It's not "genre-hopping" exactly, because that implies a wilful jumping between disparate styles, but more of a "genre meander"
