it's fun, mostly carried by the charisma of the principal three actors. gets too grimdark at the end, I guess that's the times. and the character who turns up in the last fives minutes is fuckin' abysmal.

I've never seen Cowboy Bebop, the cartoon or this show, but I don't quite understand what's up with networks green-lighting notoriously fraught or difficult projects based on reputable source material (this, Y: The Last Man), allowing them to be fucked up despite such solid source material as guidance, and then cancelling with extreme prejudice. Like, a live-action adaptation of a cult anime classic is such a seemingly bad idea on its face, so ... why bother?

i presume whichever exec was the shepherd on these projects saw their star dim and didn't have the juice to push them forward to a second year

Repeating myself from FB:

It's notable that the 'lost session' teaser absolutely nailed it in terms of tone, editing, etc, quick, witty, goofy and serious at the same time -- if they had carried this through the rest of the series then things would be better (not perfect -- my biggest story complaints were Jet's new rather clunky backstory and turning the whole Vicious/Julia thing into an unneeded running B plot instead of it just surfacing via a couple of episodes in the original, though I did like the standalone flashback episode well enough). Also, nothing against Alex Hassell per se but besides the unnecessarily convoluted Vicious backstory this time out, he just doesn't LOOK like Vicious, who is supposed to be absolutely beautifully evil. Hassell's got too rough a face for the character.

Still, can't argue that Yoko Kanno's music was always on point -- though to turn it around, I honestly think that they got in their heads that 'bebop' was meant to represent the entire sound/aesthetic of the whole series rather than it being a signifier -- the fact that they felt compelled to create this whole jazz club element as a key part of the series was pretty unnecessary!

guess my levels of expectation are lower than most as i really enjoyed this.
loved the whole steampunk vibe of it.
thought the whole world building/cgi thing looked great.
yeah, it got grimdark (great phrase !) in last episodes, but that was inevitable.
think it had a lot more legs to it for a second season.
feels weird how quickly netflix have pulled the plug on it.

note : had no idea re the anime source, so have no idea who turns up in the last scene.
