With the exception of breath of the wild and maybe hollow Knight, which is a bargain always, my recommendation is to only buy things on sale.
This seems like very obvious advice, but seconding it anyway. Checking Deku Deals has become a daily ritual for me, and I quickly realized after making a few unwise, full price purchases when I first bought my Switch, that there are so many great games that you can probably pick up something worthwhile for cheap at any given time.
Today I noticed the GameStop Black Friday sale, so I ordered Xenoblade Chronicles and Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I already have a backlog of games but whatever.
― cwkiii, Sunday, 21 November 2021 18:35 (two years ago) link
I picked up Paper Mario: Origami King for myself and Xenoblade for a friend in that sale. $26 is pretty much as cheap as first party Nintendo gets nowadays, especially for physical copies
― Nhex, Monday, 22 November 2021 13:13 (two years ago) link
would paper mario be good for a seven-year-old who gets frustrated whenever games get "too hard" or should i go with yoshi's crafted world instead? i know YKW has two-player mode which is a positive bc then i can help her through the game
― na (NA), Monday, 22 November 2021 17:01 (two years ago) link
I haven't played either of those, but to throw out another recommendation, my five-year-old is hooked on Pikmin 3; the puzzles can get a little tricky for her at times, but there is also a two-player mode.
― cwkiii, Monday, 22 November 2021 17:04 (two years ago) link
thanks! she always wants to play untitled goose game in 2-player mode but i find that pretty annoying to play in 2-player mode. so we mostly play a lot of mario party.
― na (NA), Monday, 22 November 2021 17:07 (two years ago) link
hit me up for online mario party sometime NA! i love it

OK!

Yoshi’s Crafted World has a mode that makes the game much easier. You can infinitely hover, basically fly, so the jump puzzles are way more forgiving. I had a great time playing co-op with my then 7 year-old. We recently tried another play through in normal mode, but she got impatient with my poor playing and moved onto a different game.

Speaking of which, there are apparently a bunch of Nintendo games for under $30 at Gamestop and Amazon, possibly other places. That almost *never* happens. Like, "Breath of the Wild" for $26? Bargain.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 17:30 (two years ago) link
bargain for the three people that own a switch but not that game
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 17:46 (two years ago) link
I’m one of those three. I don’t buy physical, though.
― beard papa, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 18:08 (two years ago) link
you should check out breath of the wild
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 19:03 (two years ago) link
it's pretty good

My 6 year old loves the new Mario Party. with all the "retro" games that I actually remember from the N64 games. I dig it for a couple reasons - for one it actually makes an effort to speed the fuck up through all the bullshit that occurs on the board, for two there seem to be enough minigames where you don't get bored
― frogbs, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 19:14 (two years ago) link
i really enjoy using the stickers in that game. i probably annoy the fuck out of everyone, but it's fun to do "i'm sorry!" one because a cat sound comes out
― just staying (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 23 November 2021 19:15 (two years ago) link
i also like to go "WHAAAATTT?!!!?" to everything as Birdo
AND I'M ALWAYS BIRDO
it's also the first ever nintendo game with good online play implementation

Black Friday eShop sale is on in the US; I just bought a 128GB card because I kept filling up my 64GB card and having to delete stuff to make space, then re-downloaded everything and the new one is more or less full already. :(
So I'll have to wait for a good physical sale to pick up Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Witcher 3, but hoping to pick up some good games that don't take up that much space.

I think this is the first time I've seen N++ on sale. I'm curious but still on the fence, as I generally try to avoid super hard platformers, but on the other hand, I did end up loving and almost never feeling frustrated by Celeste.

I'm so annoyed by the small text size in so many modern games. Why do I have to sit three feet away from my TV to read things?
― aegis philbin (crüt), Saturday, 4 December 2021 19:00 (two years ago) link
Yeah that bothers me too. Really wish more games had options to enlarge huds and subtitles. It's not like there isn't room on the screen to accommodate bigger text (idk how difficult that is from a programming pov though)

Just saw Röki is on sale at a big discount. It's a nice point-and-click adventure/puzzle story based in Scandinavian folklore for anyone looking for something on the gentle side (though it's a bit emotional)

Has anyone played the Switch Online version of Ocarina yet? I've heard it's dreadful but also that it's totally fine. Anyone seen it here?

yeah it’s dreadful but also it’s totally fine

Genesis Noir is also on xbox game pass (I know I know this is a Nintendo thread, just putting it out there for anyone w multiple options) and it's worth a spin. The graphics are unlike anything I've seen in a game, really stunning imo. Gameplay is I guess what is called 'gentle', but mixed with a lot of disorienting or trippy dream-like movement: camera zooms in or out, things get bigger or smaller, scenes or objects morph from one thing to another. I don't know if the story will amount to much but it's so nice to look at that I can give it a pass on that, probably.

Got Skyward Sword for xmas. Controls are dreadful. Have tried joycons in button mode, joycons doing wiimote motion style, procontroller. For most things, the pro controller is best but it is really hard to get the right slash/stab/spin move. Its more accurate with motion controls, but made my arms hurt. I'm thusly stuck on the Ghiraim bossfight and not sure I can get past it. :( Very frustrating.

the first ghiraim fight is one of the biggest roadblocks/knowledge checks in a mainline nintendo game. if i recall, you need to lead his hand away with a fake tell, then quickly do a different swing.
― adam t. (abanana), Thursday, 30 December 2021 01:19 (two years ago) link
yeah, even being aware of that im struggling. Sometimes I can get heaps of hits in, sometimes I flail. I might walk out of the temple and go back to skyloft and get more heart jar juice. Unless I cant? :/
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 30 December 2021 02:02 (two years ago) link
i got so bored with the slog at the beginning of skyward sword that i abandoned the game. i need to pick it up again but i've been sucked into fire emblem so it might be a while.
― aegis philbin (crüt), Thursday, 30 December 2021 03:18 (two years ago) link
Skyward Sword is the only Zelda I've started but not finished. I think I was right near the end, too, when I gave up. Seem to recall abandoning the game when I couldn't get past an enemy blocking a narrow bridge?? I had already been hate-playing it for a while and that just did me in. My least favourite Zelda game by far. I hope you all can enjoy it more than I did.
I did really like the bits with the desert robots and the Koloktos boss fight but the 'silent realm' bits stressed me out and I really stopped enjoying the experience when the Imprisoned appeared for a second time... so I was pretty enraged when this most stupidest looking, unfun monster ever appeared a THIRD time, and not long enough after the second encounter for my fury to have subsided
― salsa shark, Thursday, 30 December 2021 16:41 (two years ago) link
i quite enjoyed tux and fanny. it's simple but has lots of fun tangents and minigames, as well as absurdist humor that reminded me of frog fractions.

Kirby is a bit like steely dan, sucking in chillys, gordos, etc. (session musicians) to steal their essence while remaining kirby (steely dan)
