Why do you guys say that? One thing I know about him is this.

https://www.mlb.com/news/ted-williams-hall-of-fame-speech-honored-negro-league-players

(I guess his speech is marginally undermined by his words about Yawkey, but he was hardly alone there.)

clemenza, Friday, 17 December 2021 23:58 (two years ago) link

i guess it's just recency bias (as in, i recently learned about it), but he seems to have really gone out of his way to fuck gil hodges over by refusing to let roy campanella (one of the HOF voters that year for the veteran's committee, I think) vote via phone, even though campanella was very ill and died a couple months later. campanella would have been the 12th and clinching vote.

Karl Malone, Saturday, 18 December 2021 16:38 (two years ago) link

Been reading up--didn't know that. I agree with him that Hodges was a weak candidate, but that does seem petty (not to mention not letting someone in a wheelchair vote by phone). Must be some decades-long grudge.

andrew siciliano is certainly a throwback

mookieproof, Friday, 4 February 2022 06:54 (two years ago) link

rube was a nickname for a country bumpkin but marquard was a city boy, and people called him that because he reminded them of another lefty pitcher, rube waddell

damn it's been a minute since i really followed baseball and i never wouldve guessed that's matt carpenter! it's amazing what a beardless mustache does for a guy's look. take all those pesky ad patches off the uniform, run that thing through a sepia filter, and it would fit right in on a goudey gum card from the 1920s (ok the uniform fit is a bit off)

whoops, meant to do the sepia as well. might as well triple post this image and get it right, so that we can remember this great old timer from the days when winning the world series money meant not having to work at taco bell for the winter

Trivia lost to time: RJ*'s battery-mate on that team was Jack Del Rio**, both two-sporters.

*RJ: baseball & basketball
**JdR: baseball & football

Checked to see if there was a book on Rod Dedeaux, and there is, from 2013--very short, but may order a copy. He coached a lot of great players, starting with those two and Seaver.

I kept forgetting to post this, truly iconic photo of Lincecum imo. This is his first postseason game in 2010 vs Halladay’s Phillies. Other photos from this game are (maybe?) more well known because of the Phillies fans whistling/jeering at him but this one is incredible for the composition: the windup, the incongruity, the lights. Everyone remembers this game for the two Cody Ross “ssory doc” homers but Ross himself was talking about this game on a podcast and said Lincecum was the forgotten man of this game - held a loaded Phillies lineup to 3 runs in 7 innings.

Anyway.
