Just finished my first run on Monster Train and really enjoyed it. Definitely recommended for fellow Slay the Spire obsessives.

i can't imagine playing disco elysium on that tiny screen, hope you don't have switch lite

excited for outer wilds to come to switch, i briefly had it for PC but it was essentially unplayable with keyboard and mouse

global tetrahedron, Monday, 15 November 2021 17:14 (two years ago) link

Just started playing A Short Hike, it's such a delight -- and a *good game* too, not just "I HAVE QUIRKY 16-BIT GRAPHICS YOU MUST LOVE ME"

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 14:20 (two years ago) link

That seems like just the sort of game the Switch is made for.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 14:29 (two years ago) link

yeh it's super

think i forgot to do the little side missions tho

nxd, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 14:36 (two years ago) link

Just bought a Switch. First console in aeons. Recommendations?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 20 November 2021 23:03 (two years ago) link

Zelda Breath of the Wild without a doubt. I just started it again for the third time and it's just total joy.

nate woolls, Saturday, 20 November 2021 23:05 (two years ago) link

must-haves:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Super Mario Odyssey
Metroid Dread

other Mario games:

Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario Maker 2
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

indie games that are also available on other platforms but are worth checking out:

Hades
Celeste

aegis philbin (crüt), Saturday, 20 November 2021 23:37 (two years ago) link

If you like anime/turn-based RPGs at all, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is an absolute must-have

Nhex, Sunday, 21 November 2021 02:15 (two years ago) link

I highly recommend Hollow Knight and Dead Cells.

cwkiii, Sunday, 21 November 2021 04:05 (two years ago) link

those 3 must-haves are the games i'm buying a switch for. + ring fit.

adam t. (abanana), Sunday, 21 November 2021 06:24 (two years ago) link

Metroid is great but it’s tense! Reminded me of playing resident evil 1 when I was a teen. Lotta jump scares

Agree on the must-haves so far. Goose game, short hike, and Inside are good smaller-scale indies. Snipper clips is a great two-player

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 21 November 2021 15:04 (two years ago) link

the real must haves

breath of the wild 2
mario galaxy 2

cmon nintendo! i must have these

lag∞n, Sunday, 21 November 2021 15:13 (two years ago) link

if it's your only console you'll be overwhelmed with options
make an account with deku deals, bookmark interesting suggestions and wait until they're for sale for less than a fiver or at a significant discount

if you have other consoles or a pc then only bother with the switch exclusives or stuff you'd rather play portable because the switch versions are typically the worst

my picks: SMT V and Fire Emblem: 3 Houses

chihuahuau, Sunday, 21 November 2021 15:17 (two years ago) link

smtv will probably not be exclusive forever, though

chihuahuau, Sunday, 21 November 2021 15:19 (two years ago) link

With the exception of breath of the wild and maybe hollow Knight, which is a bargain always, my recommendation is to only buy things on sale. that will limit your consumption, and breath of the wild and hollow Knight will give you dozens of hours of enjoyment as you accumulate things at a reasonable pace.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 21 November 2021 16:02 (two years ago) link

I enjoyed the Switch Paper Mario, and am enjoying The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles - though if you've not played the original Ace Attorney Trilogy, that's available as well (and great).

This is obviously veeery niche, but Murder By Numbers is basically what if Ace Attorney but Picross?

With the exception of breath of the wild and maybe hollow Knight, which is a bargain always, my recommendation is to only buy things on sale.

This seems like very obvious advice, but seconding it anyway. Checking Deku Deals has become a daily ritual for me, and I quickly realized after making a few unwise, full price purchases when I first bought my Switch, that there are so many great games that you can probably pick up something worthwhile for cheap at any given time.

Today I noticed the GameStop Black Friday sale, so I ordered Xenoblade Chronicles and Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I already have a backlog of games but whatever.

cwkiii, Sunday, 21 November 2021 18:35 (two years ago) link

I picked up Paper Mario: Origami King for myself and Xenoblade for a friend in that sale. $26 is pretty much as cheap as first party Nintendo gets nowadays, especially for physical copies

Nhex, Monday, 22 November 2021 13:13 (two years ago) link

would paper mario be good for a seven-year-old who gets frustrated whenever games get "too hard" or should i go with yoshi's crafted world instead? i know YKW has two-player mode which is a positive bc then i can help her through the game

na (NA), Monday, 22 November 2021 17:01 (two years ago) link

I haven't played either of those, but to throw out another recommendation, my five-year-old is hooked on Pikmin 3; the puzzles can get a little tricky for her at times, but there is also a two-player mode.

cwkiii, Monday, 22 November 2021 17:04 (two years ago) link

thanks! she always wants to play untitled goose game in 2-player mode but i find that pretty annoying to play in 2-player mode. so we mostly play a lot of mario party.

na (NA), Monday, 22 November 2021 17:07 (two years ago) link

hit me up for online mario party sometime NA! i love it

just staying (Karl Malone), Monday, 22 November 2021 17:20 (two years ago) link

OK!

na (NA), Monday, 22 November 2021 17:26 (two years ago) link

Yoshi’s Crafted World has a mode that makes the game much easier. You can infinitely hover, basically fly, so the jump puzzles are way more forgiving. I had a great time playing co-op with my then 7 year-old. We recently tried another play through in normal mode, but she got impatient with my poor playing and moved onto a different game.

beard papa, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 07:37 (two years ago) link

Speaking of which, there are apparently a bunch of Nintendo games for under $30 at Gamestop and Amazon, possibly other places. That almost *never* happens. Like, "Breath of the Wild" for $26? Bargain.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 17:30 (two years ago) link

bargain for the three people that own a switch but not that game

ciderpress, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 17:46 (two years ago) link

I’m one of those three. I don’t buy physical, though.

beard papa, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 18:08 (two years ago) link

you should check out breath of the wild

lag∞n, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 19:03 (two years ago) link

it's pretty good

just staying (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 23 November 2021 19:11 (two years ago) link

My 6 year old loves the new Mario Party. with all the "retro" games that I actually remember from the N64 games. I dig it for a couple reasons - for one it actually makes an effort to speed the fuck up through all the bullshit that occurs on the board, for two there seem to be enough minigames where you don't get bored

frogbs, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 19:14 (two years ago) link

i really enjoy using the stickers in that game. i probably annoy the fuck out of everyone, but it's fun to do "i'm sorry!" one because a cat sound comes out

just staying (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 23 November 2021 19:15 (two years ago) link

i also like to go "WHAAAATTT?!!!?" to everything as Birdo

26 bucks apiece for disc copies of super mario brothers u and new paper mario means i'm buying even if i can't pick up a joystick right now

Black Friday eShop sale is on in the US; I just bought a 128GB card because I kept filling up my 64GB card and having to delete stuff to make space, then re-downloaded everything and the new one is more or less full already. :(

So I'll have to wait for a good physical sale to pick up Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Witcher 3, but hoping to pick up some good games that don't take up that much space.

cwkiii, Wednesday, 24 November 2021 17:42 (two years ago) link

I think this is the first time I've seen N++ on sale. I'm curious but still on the fence, as I generally try to avoid super hard platformers, but on the other hand, I did end up loving and almost never feeling frustrated by Celeste.

cwkiii, Thursday, 25 November 2021 03:41 (two years ago) link

Oh boy A Short Hike is lush.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 26 November 2021 21:55 (two years ago) link

I'm so annoyed by the small text size in so many modern games. Why do I have to sit three feet away from my TV to read things?

aegis philbin (crüt), Saturday, 4 December 2021 19:00 (two years ago) link

Yeah that bothers me too. Really wish more games had options to enlarge huds and subtitles. It's not like there isn't room on the screen to accommodate bigger text (idk how difficult that is from a programming pov though)

salsa shark, Sunday, 5 December 2021 00:01 (two years ago) link

Just saw Röki is on sale at a big discount. It's a nice point-and-click adventure/puzzle story based in Scandinavian folklore for anyone looking for something on the gentle side (though it's a bit emotional)
