"in the context of a DJ set for a dancefloor" I should probably say.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 14:51 (two years ago) link

I find the extremely specific genre names under the electronic and metal umbrellas silly.

Evan, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 14:52 (two years ago) link

of course it's silly, but at least it's fairly helpful for picking what club night to go to.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 10 November 2021 14:55 (two years ago) link

IDM is at least amusing though, as you can just pretend the phonetic way a speech synthesiser pronounces it, 'ihdm', is its own, made up word.

As for dj sets, this shouldn't be an excuse but then again the dance music industry is hopelessly anachronistic — still using cdjs (got to be a CIA psyop, surely?) when you can have 4-6 deck hooligan plunderphonics meltdowns on virtual dj, why would you choose to remain hopelessly out of date? At least in the 90s using an outdated format was born out of necessity, today it's just rave grandad-ism, which is fine and all, but at least own up to it rather than the pseudo-spiritual tosh of dj sets being some kind of amazonian shamanic ritual — they are rituals alright, but for sinners, and certainly not for noble or religious purposes. Structure - We are Structure and we will blow your mind out like a fuse on 303s.

It can be fun to mix them. Death trance acid. Hard black glam. Industrial hair.

Personal note: I pretty much noped out in 1995 when I encountered earnest gatekeeping about the boundaries of vegancore.

There should be more genres based on diet tho: ovo-lacto-disco. paleo ska. Etc.

I like that, I'll start to pronounce it 'iddim.

4-6 deck organized chaos will probably happen, but not by human dj's

I like making lists in my mind, and I don't even know why. It's not that I think the lists have much value, it's just the kind of exercise that my brain likes as a thinking prompt.

xp please rank your 5 favorite Donald Duck comics!

the golden helmet (1952), pool sharks (1951), the old castle's secret (1948), letter to santa (1949), the talking dog (1953). (all by carl barks, of course.)

Most songs would be improved if we replaced guitar solos with Mariah Carey whistle vocals.

The Golden Helmet is classic, Lost in the Andes and Back to Long Ago are up there for me.

I definitely would like more dance music that changes tempo/key and that. Don't see why not and don't agree you wouldn't be able to dance to it. Plenty of tunes switch up/down partway through

four weeks pass...

Max Martin is a terrible songwriter who has ruined pop music for over two decades.

Daydream Nation is the only good Sonic Youth album.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 13 December 2021 01:18 (two years ago) link

Daydream Nation is the only good Sonic Youth album.

Along with the debut EP It’s the only one I care to listen to beginning to end.

A Pile of Ants (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 13 December 2021 02:14 (two years ago) link

I don’t know if saying the debut EP is my favorite Sonic Youth is a challop or anything but “Burning Spear” runs through my head A LOT.

My favourite Sonic Youth albums/moments are such outliers that I feel like I must subconsciously hate the band: Ciccone Youth, the first song on Experimental Jet Set, the s/t EP. I generally like any given Kim song tho

As for enjoying Sonic Youth when they're being Sonic Youth I do really like Rather Ripped and Nurse

Sonic Youth were an important band for me growing up but I haven't listen to any of their records post Washing Machine.

JacobSanders, Monday, 13 December 2021 13:16 (two years ago) link

Sonic Nurse was my favorite album of 2004. Still is.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 December 2021 13:23 (two years ago) link

Every Sonic Youth album is good (speaking as a casual fan)

jmm, Monday, 13 December 2021 13:25 (two years ago) link

Nurse is really great! I love the mix on it, it is so unique and interesting, very hollow sounding. Rather Ripped is more like a pop album, I really like it too

this is what prompted me to reevaluate my own position. i've played "into the groovey" probably a hundred times over the past few months and it's quickly become my favorite thing they ever did.

also full disclosure: the whole feud with mariah carey was a big eye opener for me. like, okay yeah she's pretty unlikeable but you guys are literally trying to provoke her for no reason. just kind of sad.

please don't refer to me as (Austin), Monday, 13 December 2021 15:28 (two years ago) link

Feud? Afaik, they did one song about her - did she ever even hear it?

Idk what anyone sees in those Whitey Album tracks, though. First EP is good.

the first song on Experimental Jet Set

I have really weird vivid associations with this song; I drove all night to visit my girlfriend in college and when I woke up after sleeping for like three hours and this was playing and I couldn't tell what it was or who was singing or if it was part of a dream and it's kind of haunted me every since.

Sonic Youth is one of those bands that even though I like them I like them more in theory than in practice (and I say this as someone who has a tattoo of the cover of Goo).

joygoat, Monday, 13 December 2021 15:47 (two years ago) link

I really only think they got it right with Dirty.
