It’s great. Well built, well finished, plays well. Neck tint is hideous orange but otherwise about 80% as good as the AVRI version I once had. Fretwork and neck shape are faultless.

cool! good to know, definitely see those on craigslist from time to time

Chinese made for Rondo in the States I think. I’d say on a par with newer Squires (i.e. better than the stuff they were putting out 5 years ago) or maybe some of the China-made Fenders.

Enjoying my new Gibson Flying V, my first electric guitar. People who said it would be awkward to practice with were wrong. You put one part of the V between your legs and angle the neck upward on a diagonal and it’s fine. In fact it’s how classical guitarists play.

Josefa, Sunday, 7 November 2021 21:48 (two years ago) link

I kinda like the vintage tint look myself, I like it better with a satin matte than a gloss and it looks better if the maple wood has some nice figuring. It is pretty much to get the look of what old Fender clear lacquer would do as it aged. I had a 78 P-bass that they would still use it on the front face of the head stock and it was that tone of orange. Buddy had a G&L ASAT that was black that had that type of paint on the maple neck and I thought it looked pretty cool.

earlnash, Sunday, 7 November 2021 23:34 (two years ago) link

Totally agree on the tint look, but what you can't see in the pic is that this one is orange, not amber. It doesn't photograph well but the one on the left in this pic gives an idea of the difference:
https://www.tdpri.com/attachments/img_20181207_164546-jpg.567473/
(and yeah the oddness of orange nitro on the face of a yellowed poly finished 70s neck is yet another thing!)

Congrats on the Flying V, Josefa.

That is a noble instrument and I hope it brings you joy.

gin and catatonic (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 8 November 2021 00:43 (two years ago) link

Thank you, Puffin. Maybe being stuck indoors for many hours this coming winter will give me enough practice time to get good on it. I see myself ultimately as a capable guitarist, but I'm just a beginner now.

Josefa, Monday, 8 November 2021 01:03 (two years ago) link

I keep trying to escape from playing the guitar but it keeps pulling me back.

Like, I spent most of the last 10 years on mandolin, bouzouki, percussion, drums, bass.

Anything but guitar. My town has a glut of guitar players. Like 62.5% of middle-aged white guys can play guitar. In two phone calls I can find four guitarists who play better than me. So why bother?

Then I recently had a gig where what made sense was guitar (in terms of keys and logistics). So I was like, oh yeah, I guess I can do that... And now I find myself sneaking up into the attic to get amps and pedals I'd forgotten about.

Yeah that sunburst natural finish is really pretty

Not a big fan of the Ernie Ball headstock but appreciate stuff like this and the St. Vincent where they just aren't recycling old designs like Fender etc

one of the weirdest things to me is dudes who list the same guitar on craigslist for months and months, maybe even years and never once drop the price. one that i always see actually re-posted it as MORE expensive recently. so odd.

it is weird. and then they often get mad when you throw a lower (but still fair) offer out there lol.

Rescued a 1986 Fender Japan P Bass from a hacky 5 string conversion (which made it very cheap at the local pawn shop):

Does anyone have any experience with KLOS travel guitars? I have had enough times lately that I wanted to bring a guitar on a trip that I thought it might be worth getting a decent travel guitar, and most seem like shit.

I don't mind the Martin backpacker but I remain skeptical of removing a neck and unstretching/stretching strings as a strategy.

Would (personally) rather bring a mandolin or ukulele, as I'm pretty sure I've said before

popcornoscenti (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 22 November 2021 23:49 (two years ago) link

I'm not a P bass appreciator but gee it plays well. A bit red and shiny for me tho. Glad to sort it out!

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 23 November 2021 00:01 (two years ago) link

Looks great how much did you get it for if you don’t mind me asking? Do you plan on flipping it or keeping as a player ?

Spottie, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 01:26 (two years ago) link

I'm undecided because I have that nice SX Jazz upthread. Between the purchase and the parts I had to buy, I'm in it for a bit over $300 AUD, or about $220 USD - you can see why I jumped at it.

Spottie, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 03:49 (two years ago) link

How did the person who did the conversion to 5 string even think it was going to work? The outer strings wouldn't even have been playable past the 5th fret and the sound from the pickups would have been garbage.

Being cheap is expensive (snoball), Tuesday, 23 November 2021 10:40 (two years ago) link

Well, it worked fine in mechanical terms - five slot nut, five saddle bridge, thick string tuned to low B. Spacing between the strings would have been 3/4 the P bass spacing, so just a little tighter than a J bass, altho the strings were sitting pretty close to the edge. I bet the pickup wouldn't have been great but it would have been OK - I mean Musicmaster basses used a 6-pole pickup for 4 strings, and this was 8 poles for 5 strings. It had been played a lot so I'm sure it was perfectly functional.

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 23 November 2021 11:20 (two years ago) link

I am 100% supportive of the standard for 4-string bass being BEAD

If you’re playing the G string, why aren’t you just playing guitar? (Actual heroes like Mike Watt exempt from this)

war mice (hardcore dilettante), Tuesday, 23 November 2021 15:26 (two years ago) link

i don't understand that at all tbh

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 23 November 2021 15:29 (two years ago) link

For me a low B is unplayably floppy unless it's on a very well-thought-out instrument - scale length, string gauge, bridge, saddles, string spacing, etc. It is not something to trifle with. Only the gods of bass should be messing about with those frequencies. It is not an area for dabblers and DIYers.

The lowest note on your instrument is the strongest possible statement. If it's not a really focused and intentional statement, you will struggle to be coherent in that register. imo.

But because I don't really have anything below the low E in my musical vocabulary, I'm probably the wrong person to opine on this.

popcornoscenti (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 23 November 2021 15:55 (two years ago) link

i think it would be intriguing to try it out, but i have 35 years of accumulated muscle memory and reflexes i'm not going to take the time to unlearn them now. like there are 12 notes in a scale and I know where to find them on regular tuning.

also my current band is a lot of improv and it's helpful to be able to look at the guitarists' hands if they are sudden switching to a new root and just know that that same note is in the same place on my bass, i think using an alt tuning would make that really hard.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 23 November 2021 16:16 (two years ago) link

drop D i find useful in some cases but i've never really gotten a handle on low B when i've tried five strings, have thought about getting one of those hipshot drop d lever tuners on the E.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 23 November 2021 16:17 (two years ago) link

ums, hah, I had this exact experience (trying to read hands, failing because of an unexpected tuning) just last week.

It was something that we hadn't rehearsed and I was all like, "nah, you'll be fine, it's just a blues," bla y bla. When the tune started I could tell that something was wrong, couldn't tell what. So I just got out of the situation as quickly as possible and went on to something that we both knew.

Later, it turned out to be shared fuckuppery: I had been too confident that he'd pick it up. He had forgotten to retune after the previous song. Hence, trainwreck.

Fortunately it was just our normal bar where we play all the time and it was forgiven.

I've always admired his Ibanez JEMs (the ones with the splatter-paint or flower designs and "monkey grip"). This is depressing. I do like the weird fretwork though.
