The one time I remember playing a game all day - skyrim, from getting up to going to bed - I felt sordid and dirty. Possibly I've never watched TV for such a sustained period but I think that at its best TV (and films) can be as, ahem, improving, as literature, but all games teach you is how to play games. Sorry for old fashioned reithian ideas but this is a terrible opinions thread.

Yeah even though playing MtG Arena or a Dark Souls game is very mentally engaging, I feel strung out if I ever play for more than an hour.

it's bad to break character because the central conceit of this thread is opinions that you kinda believe are indefensible but it's pretty fucking obvious that no aspect of culture is inherently less improving - lol - than another

Mario Odyssey is a distinctly underwhelming experience, a bunch of eh decentish unexciting levels dragged down by the utterly terrible New Donk City part, that was all just utter bullshit

New Donk City was a goddamn festival

atlus has only made one good game and it's radiant historia

Dino Riki is 10x better than 1942

What they should do about cut scenes: All these games should have an option to let you watch a whole bunch of extended cut scenes that explain the lore and backstory of the game while you eat your dinner, and then as soon as you're done, you just jump straight into the action.

So as not to derail the Elden Ring thread... I don't know why I'm so sensitive to not enjoying sacred cows, I'm not that way anymore with other media nowadays. Maybe because I'm overconsuming a very monolithic slice of games criticism that constantly bangs on about the same bunch of games?

I could see how it would be annoying since the Souls games are critically beloved.

Hah ha, fair enough. But for simpletons like me, running on a 20 year lag, this game (well the last game at least) is the stuff.

I'm not disagreeing with Dunkey there (after watching the video for 20 seconds), but I assume it glosses over a lot of what makes Horizon better than other open world games (that I've never played and probably will never play).

i'd happily forever play iterations of games i already like with different stories and locations, innovation's fine but i don't think it matters much to lots of gamers

if your favorite band puts out a 5x LP you're probably overjoyed while the average person isn't interested in hearing the band's 20th through 50th best songs. open world games almost always feel like this unless the gameplay fundamentally makes use of distance and space (e.g. forza horizon). i don't think breath of the wild or elden ring are at all exempt here, theres just a lot of people whose favorite band is zelda or dark souls

my favorite band is marble madness but the debut was too perfect to follow-up so they retired

along the same line of reasoning, botw's world being so sparsely populated is actually an important part of why it was such a hit

Stories in videogames are maybe the worst and least interesting stories in the history of humans telling stories.

I actually like a lot of video game stories, and the immersion of playing them often lifts even the boilerplate stuff. I also find, just as no bad lyrics sink a great album but great lyrics make great albums better, that when you *do* come across great writing in video games, it makes an impact. I think of something like "Hades," an otherwise simple game which is really lifted by the quality (and quantity) of writing. "Red Dead Redemption 2" is an example of a relatively boilerplate story that is improved by the quality/quantity of writing. Or even "Hollow Knight," where the translated jibber-jabber of the characters give the (non) story more appeal, and your exploration more interest.

Though I'd argue both "Last of Us" games are elevated not really by the quality of the writing (which isn't bad) but the quality of the *acting*, which is especially unusual in video games.
