RDR2 is one of the worst 'games' i have ever played that i recommend to everyone

Be Here Now: the Video Game

I always want a narrative I can get invested in with games, but even I hate cut-scenes. Find a way to incorporate it into the game, guys.

Most video game stories have the problem of trying to imitate the way stories work in movies or books.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 5 November 2021 15:09 (ten months ago) link

Maybe not a terrible opinion/challops, but: games are more interesting when their primary inspirations aren't other games

Also, online multiplayer was a mistake

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 5 November 2021 15:18 (ten months ago) link

Which part of it? The games, or just the toxicity? Because I'm ok with online as long as there's no voice chat.

Ledge's life tier list seems right to me, in terms of my normal day-to-day use of free time and what makes me feel better instead of worse, I think of it like "creating art > reading books > seeing friends > watching tv > playing videogames". Even though I really like playing a select few games, I generally feel the worst about my use of time if I spend too long doing it.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 5 November 2021 17:17 (ten months ago) link

xp I was half-kidding with that one. Mostly the toxicity, but also just the fact that in-person multiplayer is such a better social experience. To be fair though, online multiplayer is a nice thing to have when you're forced indoors due to a pandemic (for example).

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 5 November 2021 17:52 (ten months ago) link

it doesn't really make sense to me that games would be worse for your brain than tv but i guess i play a lot of puzzle games and rpg/strategy type games, maybe if you're just playing uncharted type stuff it's worse

ciderpress, Friday, 5 November 2021 17:58 (ten months ago) link

the only time online multiplayer is superior than local co-op is when it does things that are otherwise impossible, like a 100-player battle royale. otherwise, it is very much better to play with friends than strangers (unless your friends are also kids who keep their mic on all the time and are constantly arguing with their siblings)

I do feel that playing games is more active in terms of using my brain, but I mostly watch tv with my wife, so it's more of a shared experience that can generate discussion, etc. But I also feel better after watching something really engaging like say The Leftovers and doing some personal reflection, whereas playing games is more like going to the gym for my brain, a loop of quick thinking and reactions.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 5 November 2021 18:15 (ten months ago) link

The one time I remember playing a game all day - skyrim, from getting up to going to bed - I felt sordid and dirty. Possibly I've never watched TV for such a sustained period but I think that at its best TV (and films) can be as, ahem, improving, as literature, but all games teach you is how to play games. Sorry for old fashioned reithian ideas but this is a terrible opinions thread.

namaste darkness my old friend (ledge), Friday, 5 November 2021 19:07 (ten months ago) link

That's total bs, dude, I just slayed a frost troll in the street the other day

knuckleheaded mornonic bafoon (Old Lunch), Friday, 5 November 2021 19:20 (ten months ago) link

Yeah even though playing MtG Arena or a Dark Souls game is very mentally engaging, I feel strung out if I ever play for more than an hour.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 5 November 2021 19:24 (ten months ago) link

Don't agree with any of the ranking given above but it is as noted a terrible opinions thread

fix up luke shawp (darraghmac), Friday, 5 November 2021 19:32 (ten months ago) link

it's bad to break character because the central conceit of this thread is opinions that you kinda believe are indefensible but it's pretty fucking obvious that no aspect of culture is inherently less improving - lol - than another

Mario Odyssey is a distinctly underwhelming experience, a bunch of eh decentish unexciting levels dragged down by the utterly terrible New Donk City part, that was all just utter bullshit

The Speak Of The Mearns (Jonathan Hellion Mumble), Saturday, 6 November 2021 01:36 (ten months ago) link

New Donk City was a goddamn festival

atlus has only made one good game and it's radiant historia

Dino Riki is 10x better than 1942

smb3 is the worst game of all time

i just wanted to be terrible!

i haven't played dino riki, and the sad fact is that i've played 1943 more than 1942 :(

I've had it with these Hollywood celebrities. Keanu Reeves gets to sit in his car lobbing old chicken bones at people outside the shopping parade without a blind bit of notice. Me, I get arrested for farting on the bus. Unfair

What they should do about cut scenes: All these games should have an option to let you watch a whole bunch of extended cut scenes that explain the lore and backstory of the game while you eat your dinner, and then as soon as you're done, you just jump straight into the action.

I actually like cut scenes

three months pass...

So as not to derail the Elden Ring thread... I don't know why I'm so sensitive to not enjoying sacred cows, I'm not that way anymore with other media nowadays. Maybe because I'm overconsuming a very monolithic slice of games criticism that constantly bangs on about the same bunch of games?

Mobile Suit Gundam Style (Leee), Thursday, 24 February 2022 22:13 (seven months ago) link

I could see how it would be annoying since the Souls games are critically beloved.

I, on the other hand, agree with this

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 24 February 2022 22:40 (seven months ago) link

Hah ha, fair enough. But for simpletons like me, running on a 20 year lag, this game (well the last game at least) is the stuff.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 February 2022 00:49 (seven months ago) link

I'm not disagreeing with Dunkey there (after watching the video for 20 seconds), but I assume it glosses over a lot of what makes Horizon better than other open world games (that I've never played and probably will never play).

i can't vibe with From games tbh

Dunkey's voice is quintessential "guy who is rude to fast food workers"

i wd disagree with the 15 seconds of his premise that i hung in for anyway

i'd happily forever play iterations of games i already like with different stories and locations, innovation's fine but i don't think it matters much to lots of gamers

if your favorite band puts out a 5x LP you're probably overjoyed while the average person isn't interested in hearing the band's 20th through 50th best songs. open world games almost always feel like this unless the gameplay fundamentally makes use of distance and space (e.g. forza horizon). i don't think breath of the wild or elden ring are at all exempt here, theres just a lot of people whose favorite band is zelda or dark souls

ciderpress, Saturday, 26 February 2022 18:40 (seven months ago) link

my favorite band is marble madness but the debut was too perfect to follow-up so they retired

along the same line of reasoning, botw's world being so sparsely populated is actually an important part of why it was such a hit
