in car view is great (Shift did an amazing job imo with all the juddering effects - shame about the bugs) but often it's too difficult being able to assess 360 degrees information coming at you. VR can fix this sometimes.

example is GTA, in car is just stressful.

I have played more in cab view with Farming Sim lately, but this is a game that essentially relies on looking behind and forward almost all the time. There's a mod that allows me to extend the Fov which means I'm not having to rotate too much though. Forget trying to fork bales in cab though, judging distances ain't happening on a flat screen.

First person camera is a worthless evolutionary blind alley for the medium

Vidoe games aren't art

No Man's Sky still sucks I'm afraid.

in terms of productive things to do with your life, charitable works > creating art > reading books > watching tv > playing videogames

I always want a narrative I can get invested in with games, but even I hate cut-scenes. Find a way to incorporate it into the game, guys.

Most video game stories have the problem of trying to imitate the way stories work in movies or books.

Maybe not a terrible opinion/challops, but: games are more interesting when their primary inspirations aren't other games

Also, online multiplayer was a mistake

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 5 November 2021 15:18 (two months ago) link

Which part of it? The games, or just the toxicity? Because I'm ok with online as long as there's no voice chat.

Ledge's life tier list seems right to me, in terms of my normal day-to-day use of free time and what makes me feel better instead of worse, I think of it like "creating art > reading books > seeing friends > watching tv > playing videogames". Even though I really like playing a select few games, I generally feel the worst about my use of time if I spend too long doing it.

xp I was half-kidding with that one. Mostly the toxicity, but also just the fact that in-person multiplayer is such a better social experience. To be fair though, online multiplayer is a nice thing to have when you're forced indoors due to a pandemic (for example).

it doesn't really make sense to me that games would be worse for your brain than tv but i guess i play a lot of puzzle games and rpg/strategy type games, maybe if you're just playing uncharted type stuff it's worse

ciderpress, Friday, 5 November 2021 17:58 (two months ago) link

the only time online multiplayer is superior than local co-op is when it does things that are otherwise impossible, like a 100-player battle royale. otherwise, it is very much better to play with friends than strangers (unless your friends are also kids who keep their mic on all the time and are constantly arguing with their siblings)

I do feel that playing games is more active in terms of using my brain, but I mostly watch tv with my wife, so it's more of a shared experience that can generate discussion, etc. But I also feel better after watching something really engaging like say The Leftovers and doing some personal reflection, whereas playing games is more like going to the gym for my brain, a loop of quick thinking and reactions.

The one time I remember playing a game all day - skyrim, from getting up to going to bed - I felt sordid and dirty. Possibly I've never watched TV for such a sustained period but I think that at its best TV (and films) can be as, ahem, improving, as literature, but all games teach you is how to play games. Sorry for old fashioned reithian ideas but this is a terrible opinions thread.

That's total bs, dude, I just slayed a frost troll in the street the other day

knuckleheaded mornonic bafoon (Old Lunch), Friday, 5 November 2021 19:20 (two months ago) link

Yeah even though playing MtG Arena or a Dark Souls game is very mentally engaging, I feel strung out if I ever play for more than an hour.

Don't agree with any of the ranking given above but it is as noted a terrible opinions thread

fix up luke shawp (darraghmac), Friday, 5 November 2021 19:32 (two months ago) link

it's bad to break character because the central conceit of this thread is opinions that you kinda believe are indefensible but it's pretty fucking obvious that no aspect of culture is inherently less improving - lol - than another

Mario Odyssey is a distinctly underwhelming experience, a bunch of eh decentish unexciting levels dragged down by the utterly terrible New Donk City part, that was all just utter bullshit

i just wanted to be terrible!

i haven't played dino riki, and the sad fact is that i've played 1943 more than 1942 :(

I've had it with these Hollywood celebrities. Keanu Reeves gets to sit in his car lobbing old chicken bones at people outside the shopping parade without a blind bit of notice. Me, I get arrested for farting on the bus. Unfair

What they should do about cut scenes: All these games should have an option to let you watch a whole bunch of extended cut scenes that explain the lore and backstory of the game while you eat your dinner, and then as soon as you're done, you just jump straight into the action.

I actually like cut scenes
