Morbs isn’t here to police our fantasy league chatter now

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 3 November 2021 02:16 (two years ago) link

I'd be very happy if the Atlanta manager leaves Fried (52 pitches) in for a bit, at least until one or two baserunners get on, instead of pulling him for the sake of pulling him. Just as an experiment.

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 02:17 (two years ago) link

If he doesn't get his Maddux, I'm gonna throw furniture.

Everybody Loves Ramen (WmC), Wednesday, 3 November 2021 02:17 (two years ago) link

we should all be happy he'll qualify for the win

mookieproof, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 02:18 (two years ago) link

Apparently Brantley would've been safe on appeal at first anyway?

This, from a former minor league umpire, explains why Atlanta didn't challenge. Just because Michael Brantley missed the bag and Max Fried tagged it does not mean there's an out. The fielding team needs to appeal.

Baseball rules sometimes don't make sense. https://t.co/ZnCv7XKQ8U

mookieproof, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 02:21 (two years ago) link

Honestly, as of today, who remembers Alex Bregman?

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 02:24 (two years ago) link

Close--glad he didn't exit on a strikeout.

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 02:31 (two years ago) link

hell yeah Freeman

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 02:42 (two years ago) link

the cutting to sole barves fans in the stands tomahawk chopping is fucking disgusting.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 02:44 (two years ago) link

agree

Everybody Loves Ramen (WmC), Wednesday, 3 November 2021 02:50 (two years ago) link

Yeah the Chop has prevented me for fully enjoying those WS.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 02:55 (two years ago) link

it just feels like there’s a deliberate doubling down on their racist associations for the national stage

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:01 (two years ago) link

ATL bullpen for MVP, give 'em all Corvettes.

Everybody Loves Ramen (WmC), Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:07 (two years ago) link

d'Arnaud or Soler?

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:11 (two years ago) link

could make a case for Freeman - played every game , higher BA, etc.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:15 (two years ago) link

If it's got to be one person, my vote goes to Matzek.

Everybody Loves Ramen (WmC), Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:18 (two years ago) link

Thought about Freeman too--really recovered after that horrendous start.

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:20 (two years ago) link

I didn’t realise the only other championship won in Atlanta was actually the Braves back in 1995.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:21 (two years ago) link

I mean, we call them the Barves for a reason

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:23 (two years ago) link

No but I mean the Hawks and Falcons are evem worse!

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:24 (two years ago) link

I’m just sad Acuna couldn’t be part of this.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:25 (two years ago) link

I don’t know if Atlanta makes it this far w/o the Acuna injury, actually.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:29 (two years ago) link

OTM

Everybody Loves Ramen (WmC), Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:30 (two years ago) link

Why is that? Because Rosario and Soler played instead?

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:32 (two years ago) link

yeah ocuna salavaged their garbage first half- no way the win this all without him

BARVES!!!

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:35 (two years ago) link

Congrats Braves fans! Enjoy it!

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:35 (two years ago) link

Hat-tip to Swanson to considering making the final out at second but choosing to go to Freeman.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:36 (two years ago) link

Trevor Plouffe called it back in the spring!

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 3 November 2021 03:37 (two years ago) link

Very much enjoying this Braves radio postgame, where they have one of their guys in the dugout doing live on the spot interviews as players and coaches and trophies walk by.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 04:13 (two years ago) link

Congrats Braves! They were the best team in the postseason no question, they outplayed all three of their opponents and it wasn't particularly close. Freeman deserved a championship -- it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 10:15 (two years ago) link

All of Soler’s home runs gave the Braves a lead, putting him on a list of only six players who have hit at least three go-ahead home runs in a World Series. The others are Babe Ruth (1926), Lou Gehrig (1928), Gene Tenace (1972), Curtis Granderson (2015) and George Springer in 2017 for the Astros.

Pretty solid list above and beyond the first two guys.

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 10:48 (two years ago) link

I guess that's kind of tautological--the list of players who've hit three HR period in a WS is probably made up exclusively of good players.

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 10:54 (two years ago) link

fun stat: the Milwaukee Brewers have made the playoffs 8 times. all 8 times the team that beat them made the World Series. 6 of them won.

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 12:56 (two years ago) link

don't mind that atlanta won, good run they went on

among the ppl i heard dansby credit in his on field interview were god and the braves analytics staff

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 13:49 (two years ago) link

xp yet another moral victory for the Crew

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 3 November 2021 14:35 (two years ago) link

so what do we do now for five months?

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 3 November 2021 14:55 (two years ago) link

I think Freeman has edged ahead of his statistical twin Paul Goldschmidt for the HOF.

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 15:55 (two years ago) link

xp -- get caught up on a LOT of movies.

Everybody Loves Ramen (WmC), Wednesday, 3 November 2021 16:59 (two years ago) link

i actually got curious about something kind of dumb – but have spent the last couple weeks setting up a custom league in OOTP, with each team's roster being every team's all-time greats. I want to see how many times out of 100 (or so), the Yankees dominate the AL, whether the Giants or Dodger turn out more successful and if middle of the road teams like the Jays or Brewers can pull off any first place finishes. I'm about 80% done constructing the lineups.

also i had that same thought last night about Freeman! when setting up rosters for this dumb league I realized Freeman might be the best 1B the Braves have had for any extended period.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 3 November 2021 17:31 (two years ago) link

Checked an all-time Braves team, and it looks like Freeman for sure; only competition is Fred McGriff for a much shorter time frame.

Big surprise--Freeman and Goldschmidt's postseason stats aren't all that dissimilar! Goldschmidt looks even better, but only half the PA and no titles:

Freeman -- .290/.393/.525, 9 HR (183 PA)
Goldschmidt -- .282/.351/.624, 8 HR (94 PA)

Both with Excel Sports Management...Have they ever been seen in the same room together?

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 November 2021 20:10 (two years ago) link

All sorts of Braves-related oddities from Jayson Stark today, including:

• How many teams have started all three outfielders in the game they won the World Series who were literally playing for some other team halfway through that season — or at any point during that season? Who out there guessed none? Good guess!

• And in a related development, how many teams have ever won a World Series in which not a single one of their Opening Day outfielders played in any game of that World Series? That would also be none.

clemenza, Thursday, 4 November 2021 01:11 (two years ago) link

eight months pass...

I think Freeman has edged ahead of his statistical twin Paul Goldschmidt for the HOF.
― clemenza, Wednesday, November 3, 2021 11:55 AM

Even with Freeman having a solid year, and quite possibly headed to another WS, Goldschmidt has reasserted his edge: frontrunner for MVP, leading all three slash categories at the moment (plus runs and hits), not making news with agent problems. These two guys are something else.

clemenza, Monday, 11 July 2022 15:18 (one year ago) link

goldy looks promising

JAWS
First Base (23rd):
55.5 career WAR | 42.3 7yr-peak WAR | 48.9 JAWS | 5.8 WAR/162
Average HOF 1B (out of 23):
65.5 career WAR | 42.1 7yr-peak WAR | 53.8 JAWS | 4.9 WAR/162

mookieproof, Monday, 11 July 2022 16:17 (one year ago) link

Honestly I think stories like freeman’s agent problems, might actually help goldschmidt. Anything to get his name out there would help.

Goldschmidt remains the most anonymous future HOFer I can remember. No idea what he even looks like

, Monday, 11 July 2022 20:49 (one year ago) link

I think if he played on my team I still wouldn't remember what he looks like

I literally just finished rewatching the Sopranos episode where the struggling rapper hires Bobby Bacala to shoot him ("somewhere fleshy") under the same rationale!

Hahahaa!

goldschmidt a 49th-round pick out of high school and eighth-round pick out of texas state

bless
