Part 3 is great

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 October 2021 17:43 (two years ago) link

lol what's the opposite of a speed run? Because that's what this is so far.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 October 2021 18:10 (two years ago) link

Anyway, there's a meta perfection to his approach, because as far as I'm concerned youtube is where I go to watch and/or enjoy alternate endings to or plot branching in games I'm too lazy or exhausted to play more than once to get every ending (that is to say, all of them so far), let alone 100% or "platinum." So of course I will eventually make my way through all/much/most of this.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 October 2021 18:45 (two years ago) link

Weird he seemingly couldn't stop from playing so cheaply. I intentionally didn't bother learning much about how to best level up, do "quickhacks", and all that, and combat stayed reasonably challenging. But of course I can't say that's "playing it right", either.

Also he played a lot when the game was still super broken. The rogue taxis stuff was one of my favourite bits of the game and was mostly busted for Tim.

The game itself is barely the point at all of course. If you are thinking about playing it before watching the video, I'd say don't bother!

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 28 October 2021 18:51 (two years ago) link

Part 3 literally spoils every ending in the game so if that matters don't watch it.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 October 2021 18:53 (two years ago) link

I like the "good time hat" idea, that's pretty much how I try to play. I just play so slowly that luckily I wasn't very far before a lot was fixed.

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 28 October 2021 18:56 (two years ago) link

Somehow of all his claims I find the idea of how many videogames he plays to completion to be the hardest to believe. 4 or 5 versions of Shadowrun? A dozen rodent based 16 bit games? To the end? Really?

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 28 October 2021 19:00 (two years ago) link

belief isn't important to me when watching a tim rogers review, i believe it like i believe bret hart is really working someone's knee. whether it's an exaggeration, a lie or cold hard facts, i'm gonna accept it, because sometimes it's fun to be tricked

feel like i should've reached for a rock reference what with the number of times he says "the bottom line" but decided to go with a technical guy for arbitrary reasons

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Thursday, 28 October 2021 20:56 (two years ago) link

fuck i meant stone cold. i am so fucked if any wrestling fans sees that last one

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Thursday, 28 October 2021 20:57 (two years ago) link

what?

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 28 October 2021 21:10 (two years ago) link

he's saying that wrestling fans hate ice cream chains

Evan, Thursday, 28 October 2021 21:44 (two years ago) link

Will M was understandably mixing up stone cold steve Austin's catchphrase "that's the bottom line cause stone cold said so" and the rock's finishing move "rock bottom"

, Thursday, 28 October 2021 21:58 (two years ago) link

As someone who reads Tim's Twitter feed I feel pretty confident saying hes just a massive liar even when he isnt playing "tim rogers" or maybe he's just always playing "tim rogers" even in interactions with people he knows. I get that he has a funky brain but the breadth of things he claims to have recently consumed is ridiculous

, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:07 (two years ago) link

The part where he says he read 266 books last year and 12 this year (because he was playing too many video games)...idk, it seems crazy to me, but people on ILB read an amount of books that I can't conceive of, and he does have a pretty weird brain. And he has time for consuming media as part of his job.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:13 (two years ago) link

i always get into that zone where i think "oh they must just be skimming it", and then think about how all reading is a factor of skimming, and we all have our own ideas of what "skimming" is

Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:16 (two years ago) link

because even if you read in one day -- really read -- a book that takes a normal person 7 days, what does that mean in terms of absorbing the material? the person who takes 7 days may very well sit and think about the passages during the "downtime" during those 7 days, during those dreams, in conversations. "oh what are you reading?", "well, "

meanwhile the person who reads 300 books a year is apparently doing all of this in a day, nearly every day

Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:18 (two years ago) link

seems fucked up to me but i am a "slow listener" advocate, slow the fuck down everyone

Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:18 (two years ago) link

Yeah, I thought I was a super fast reader in college, but I was definitely skimming for keywords and gists, and I'm slower now because I'm actually trying to absorb all of the words, for pleasure.

Clearly you can skim games too (maybe this is what we should call speed running).

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:21 (two years ago) link

that was always the thing about the matrix to me - sure, you can hook up a cable and download the info to your mind, but does that also count the time that your mind spends digesting the content? you may hear the golden rule as a 5 year old, but it takes time to understand what it really means. does the matrix cable account for that? maybe it does. i admit that i read superintelligence a few years ago, all the way through, and think of this stuff in terms of "cycles". maybe there are plenty of cycles to go around in the matrix

Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:21 (two years ago) link

Clearly you can skim games too (maybe this is what we should call speed running).

for sure. not even speed running, but just trying to "beat" the game as quickly as possible. maybe doing 2/4 of the bosses in breath of the wild before headed toward ganon

Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:22 (two years ago) link

I can believe that he's capable of reading very fast, less believable is his tendency to respond to everyone on Twitter asking "have you read/watched/played this" with "why I just so happened to be reading/watching/playing that yesterday/this morning" which he does surprisingly a lot

Among other things...I've known 2 people who have legitimate trouble telling the truth in any context and he just reminds me of them sometimes, and that unfortunately leads me to treat the actual biographical stuff he shares as kayfabe

, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:30 (two years ago) link

i can see that for sure

i had a friend who had a thing about lying. like, a very weird, extreme dedication to extravagant lies. which ended our friendship.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 October 2021 22:39 (two years ago) link

I have a feeling it’s just the character Tim Rogers idk

Evan, Thursday, 28 October 2021 23:17 (two years ago) link

It's the fact that he claimed to play all these old console games that got me, at least some of them the first time. Unless he's generally freakishly good at platformers, a lot of those can take an eternity. Maybe he used an emulator and savestates, at least.

I was doing Austin's "What?" bit with Will but he punked out.

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 28 October 2021 23:21 (two years ago) link

i am exhausted with the tim rogers character, tbh. i started watching the cyberpunk 2077 review, and about 10 minutes in i just wanted to die

Karl Malone, Thursday, 28 October 2021 23:23 (two years ago) link

the most exhausting thing was the Twitch stream after he played the review intro video and started obsessing about how the outro (of the intro) portion was done in 59 point whatever frames per second resulting in a jump every x seconds that he had just now noticed...... this went on for some time.

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 28 October 2021 23:26 (two years ago) link

if you're watching the twitch stream before it's even on youtube, you kind of bought your tickets already

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 October 2021 23:40 (two years ago) link

I'm a fan. But for how he likes to say the scripted version is not a real person, well, is it possible the real guy is even more tedious?

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 28 October 2021 23:43 (two years ago) link

It is funny how I can feel mega bad for him due to his various challenges and then I watch a video where he describes the 45 $500 jackets he owns and I'm like wait a second...

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 October 2021 23:48 (two years ago) link

having met him the real guy is more or less the same person you see in the intermission bits of these vids

ciderpress, Thursday, 28 October 2021 23:54 (two years ago) link

He was extremely the guy in the videos in 2010 when I met him, but it does sound like he's mellowed

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 29 October 2021 00:09 (two years ago) link

Didn't someone here say they met him and he drunkenly tried to start a fight with them

i am exhausted with the tim rogers character, tbh.

seems like he is too, fwiw

And then I tried a bit where I was confidently incorrect (cold stone creamery)

Evan, Friday, 29 October 2021 00:55 (two years ago) link

Is he exhausted with the character? Seems he is proud of his 10 hour video game review

Evan, Friday, 29 October 2021 00:56 (two years ago) link

his ability to remember things and numbers down to ridiculous levels of detail remind me a lot of descriptions of the “pure o” version of ocd. it might not be completely true to reality, but your brain loops on events enough you end up with intense recollections of detail

also, absolutely burrowing into video games and books fits

mh, Friday, 29 October 2021 01:10 (two years ago) link

this isn’t a diagnosis per se, just a possibly mentality where doing things in this way makes sense

he also mentions in one of the videos that he’s limited himself to a 40 hour work week, but his main hobby is still playing video games outside of those hours

mh, Friday, 29 October 2021 01:11 (two years ago) link

lol missed you back there Evan. Also i had to cook dinner. I hope everyone smelt it

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 29 October 2021 01:14 (two years ago) link

No worries man, you rock!

Evan, Friday, 29 October 2021 03:20 (two years ago) link

i for one do not think this guy who creates obsessive videos that dissect every detail of his own emotional and intellectual relationship to video games for a living is lying when he says he plays a lot of video games

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 29 October 2021 14:34 (two years ago) link

i think he heavily embellishes a lot of his experiences, it's not really lying so much as storytelling. i don't have any doubt he played through a ton of old platformers or whatever, those games are all like an hour or two long

ciderpress, Friday, 29 October 2021 14:37 (two years ago) link

gonna report back when tearing my hair out in the middle of Rocky Rodent

As someone who has been following the dude's output since the mid 00s--he's been doing degrees of kayfabe for pretty much his whole career. He's even gone on at length publicly about how the first stuff that he wrote online was a troll to make fun of some self-serious person he knew on a game forum. For a while I was maybe unhealthily para-socially fascinated with the question of "how much of this is a bit?" I get the impression that there's less of the persona and more of the "authentic" guy in his current output, but it's also clear that he believes real, true authenticity on the internet isn't possible, and he has fun with that.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 29 October 2021 17:40 (two years ago) link

and that's THE STRAIGHT DOPE--stay tuned for my multi-hour video review of Tim's review

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 29 October 2021 17:42 (two years ago) link

tim is very good at benjamin buttoning himself via jackets and hair. with these time powers, i believe he has played and read everything.

Will M was understandably mixing up stone cold steve Austin's catchphrase "that's the bottom line cause stone cold said so" and the rock's finishing move "rock bottom"

i think this is 100% what i did to the point where i heard dwayne's voice in my head saying "that's the bottom line"

It's the fact that he claimed to play all these old console games that got me, at least some of them the first time. Unless he's generally freakishly good at platformers, a lot of those can take an eternity. Maybe he used an emulator and savestates, at least.
