Did I say last week? It was a bit longer than that tbh

Looks like I got scooped by someone else who's smithing an RPDR 1DS -- I'm not too fussed because now I can play it and, hopefully, do well in it.

I’m looking forward to writing the 1DS that got accepted but can’t quite let go of the 1DS that got away. Not sure if I should just forget about it, try again next year, or write it anyway and submit to Alpaca Farm or somewhere else. Probably just the first option.

Take heart in that everyone who took part in the VU 1DS went on to create their own 1DS. I know that doesn't make real sense but bear with me.

you think .286 is bad... i've started at .125. feel like i have completely lost my DE mojo, and i know people say it's luck but i have had consistently top-of-rundle DE for most of my LL career (im gonna chalk it up to writing a weekly pub quiz every week for the past 8 years)

Apparently the author of the Rolling Stone article referenced earlier this week plays in LL, and they were assigned 3 for said question.

Heh, hadn’t noticed that, but yeah. I track him along with his friend who also writes for them. I studied their work on the 70s Music ML when I worked on the 60s one and recently playtested the other guy’s “You’re So Vain” 1DS.

Both of them seem to be pretty nice, at least in my dealings with them

Tough breaks, continued: my opponent and I both got 4 right, but though my defense cost me the match, it wasn't unreasonable or bad, just rotten luck: they had 50% in science but got the Meitner question right (to which I gave 3) but then they got ~olive branch~ wrong.

Like, I'm on pace to smash my previous best TCA*, but here I am, 4-5-4, and sitting in 16th.

* Yeah, yeah, LL91 is probably due for a course correction sooner or later, but kvetching is part of the fun.

In general. I understand there is kind of civic duty to participate, but I don’t, not usually.

I don't really feel any civic duty. I suppose I just treat it as a general knowledge 1DS. I usually participate, but not always.

According to the rules, correct spelling isn't required but "a 'sounds-like' guideline will be used for misspelled answers." "Erdlich" does not sound like "Erdrich."

Granted, Thorsten is sometimes more lenient than the rules, so it wouldn't have surprised me if he *had* accepted "Erdlich." But unless you know that someone else got credit for that spelling, I don't think you have much of a defense.

I agree that it's a fun thing, but there is a protocol in place, so I am going to practice using it this one time.

The number one hit if I Google ERDLICH is Louise ERDRICH! And they do sound alike! The R sound gets buried, and R and L are related letters, as we know from Japanese, if not otherwise.

They are both liquids.

If I were Thorsten, I think it would be difficult to decide what counts as a "sound-alike" spelling. The line isn't always easily drawn.

Anyway, I have just submitted. We will see what he says.

the liquid consonant/"r and l sound the same" excuses are a total red herring. what it sounds like doesn't matter. the answer is in writing. all the matters is if he thinks the spelling is close enough. which it might be!

oh i see you're responding to the "sounds like" guideline. that's a silly guideline for a written quiz.
