you can do that but I understand why it's not built into the platform, that wasn't the original intention of instagram. I imagine they will shove that in at some point though and then instagram will become much worse. what is good about instagram is that it is basically a personal platform; content IS first party; things don't really go 'viral' ON instagram.

your friends must not load up their stories with reposted videos of pottery techniques, wacky houses, "TONIGHT!!!" event postings, TikTok type videos where people send up their parents' old-fashioned ways, astrology content, viral cat videos, viral dog videos,

My Facebook wall has had a picture of a wrench and "Something went wrong. This may be because of a technical error that we're working to get fixed. Try reloading this page" for like a week and a half now.

Even though FB is 98% garbage, and even though I can access friends' pages and see stuff that way, I'd still like to fix it. Has anyone had this problem and fixed it? None of the solutions I've found online work.

akm, things absolutely go viral on instagram. you just don't follow the right meme pages, or follow people that repost them.

i'd say if you don't see things go viral on instagram, you're probably following the right people

otm. god bless my friends but they really love reposting internet stuff in a way i don't think will ever feel natural to me.

John Stockton buying a used car from (Karl Malone), Friday, 22 October 2021 17:01 (two years ago) link

true, I actually don't look at stories at all unless someone tells me to. I find them annoying. Instagram for me is essentially endless photos of dogs.

akm, Friday, 22 October 2021 17:04 (two years ago) link

i treat instagram posts like my public-facing "work" self, finished things, official announcements, pictures of myself where i look ok. i treat stories like my friends are reading, or people who are interested in my art - work in progress stuff, jokes, dumb polls, occasional close-up of things that look like assholes, etc

John Stockton buying a used car from (Karl Malone), Friday, 22 October 2021 17:14 (two years ago) link

some days I forget to post on FB, and almost every day, I don't read, and I'm always happier.

essentially using Messenger and using it to keep track of events at this point, as well as communicate with the cast of the show I'm doing now (cos they refuse to use traditional email, meh)

I never read Facebook, and use a plug-in so i don't see the feed at all.

I don't see much lifestyle stuff on Instagram that would make me jealous. The closest to a bad feeling on there is a little sadness at seeing friends who moved to different parts of the country over the years so we can't hang out regularly except via messages. OTOH, without some kind of social media we'd be in even less contact and I wouldn't see video of them taking up competitive sailing or sonogram photos or etc..

This is pretty much how I feel about social media

It's weird that you can't reshare other people's posts on your Insta but you can in Facebook and you can't like or react to people''s stories in Insta but you can in Facebook. There's so much you can't do in Insta unless you have a separate app.

Pretty sure this was completely intentional design and I'm kinda glad it is that way. It slows down viral spread to only mainly the Stories side

four months pass...

I'm signed up with a couple of ghostwriting companies so occasionally I get offers to pitch projects. This one just landed in my inbox:

Masculine Self Improvement Book Project

We are seeking a writer to work with a tech entrepreneur on a book teaching men to find success in love, life and their careers by tapping into primal masculine instincts.

CLIENT: The client is a former tech entrepreneur

SUBJECT: The client was very successful in tech who sold his social media platform in 2020, and as his next chapter wants to advise other men on how they can find success in their own lives by tapping into and honoring their primal masculine instincts. He's created a concept and outline for a book based around a 3-tiered pyramid system—on the lowest level are fulfilling basic, primitive functions that form the foundation for masculine success (e.g. hunting, fire building, taking care of their cave—all of which he argues have equivalent functions in the modern day), on the second level is building a strong sense of self via self-respect and leadership, and on the third level is putting it all into practice to improve performance on the dating scene, in the bedroom and in the workplace. He's working to work with an experienced writer who can help him turn his vision into a complete book, which he intends to custom or self publish.

SCOPE: The writer will draw on interviews with the client to write a complete manuscript.

BUDGET: In the range of $30k-$60k for bookwriting

WRITER PROFILE: The ideal collaborator for this will: 1) have written successful, well-received self-help books, particularly any intended for male audiences 2) be comfortable writing a book that promotes traditional masculinity as an ideal to aspire to and treats masculinity and femininity as distinct and complementary 3) be available to start immediately

So, things women do?

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 17 October 2022 17:34 (one year ago) link

hunting, fire building, taking care of their cave—all of which he argues have equivalent functions in the modern day

Hunting: modern-day equivalent is pillow fights
fire-building: slow-cooking a lentil casserole
taking care of their cave: being a team leader for a mortgage provider, who also washes everyone's cups in the workplace kitchen

Nhex, Wednesday, 19 October 2022 05:54 (one year ago) link

The midjourney Discord is like the world’s worst IRC server because of the volume. I’m suspicious there’s not a Discord middle ground, it’s either dead or thousands of people screaming into the void ala Twitch chat.

Signal has been great for a long-distance relationship, just talking back and forth in an ongoing way (vs. texting, calls, emails, whatever.). Not sure if this is the same as WeChat, other than that it’s encrypted.
