my little tip for instagram is that you can post from chrome if you select developer tools and then select the mobile interface. can't select multiple images though...

i hate typing on my phone sooooo much, i refuse to learn how to do it correctly because life is too short for that bullshit.

Facebook is absolutely the worst, and people who think Instagram is worse just don't understand how to use it properly.

Facebook and Twitter make me hate humanity. (I've been on Facebook since February of 2005, fwiw, so have seen it develop into the absolute abyss it is now).

Instagram gives me some glimmers of laughter and insight, on occasion.

The one thing I really like instagram for is tattoos - you can follow artists or shops and get a real sense of what kind of work they do and the general vibe of the places. A lot of good tattooers now seem to be able to pick and choose what they work on in terms of having limited bookings for custom work or offering up flash they really want to do. Like I found a person in Chicago to do one I've wanted for ages because her work would show up in my feed and always caught my eye; there must be hundreds of shops there so other than word of mouth you'd have to visit them all in person to find someone.

It felt kind of pretentious at first to see people announcing when their books would be open to get appointments with them and listing what they were interested in doing or not doing, but it's so much better than wandering into a shop, hoping the one guy who used to work there that you heard about is still there, and then realizing he's a huge asshole while you're getting worked on.

i use Instagram 20 minutes a week to look at (and exchange forwards of) sheebs, alpacas, and guinea pigs eating bananas. The other day i clicked on the search button and i saw an enormous snail thing running on a treadmill. Fuck instagram!

I don't understand the Instagram hatred, but I know I'm using Instagram "wrong" in that basically everyone I follow is either a jazz musician or someone posting pictures of jazz records. Or dogs. And I never watch anyone's "stories".

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 19:43 (two years ago) link

the nice thing about stories is that they go away. i do all my work in progress stuff on there and then use the normal posts for things that are "finished" (or when i'm "extremely drunk")

I follow a lot of people on IG— old friends from high school and college, poets, musicians, visual artists, chefs, mycologists, geologists, rock climbers, leftist shitposting accounts, rare booksellers, literary presses, magazines, etc. I take breaks a few times a year, but for the most part, I find it to be a pretty decent place for communicating with people and such.

I find Instagram to be a nice middle ground between Facebook and Twitter in terms of absorbable content, and there's less pressure to interact at all in general which I like

Nhex, Thursday, 21 October 2021 01:16 (two years ago) link

I drew the line at Twitter and IG came after that so

FB is a garbage fire as well, just a matter of time

my takeaway: have a text or email contact for anyone you might wanna talk to online and/or IRL

I used to use Instagram to post photos of cocktails that I made at home, and most of the accounts that I followed were bars, bartenders, and other home mixologists, and then a small handful of friends. So it was all fairly tolerable, though when I lost interest in the cocktail-photo project, I lost interest in the platform altogether.

jaymc, Thursday, 21 October 2021 03:58 (two years ago) link

Yup, OTM. I maintain we need a social network for music. One that really works well and lets artists, DJs and fans share and collaborate with each other, share events and new music aetc; possibly with a primitive DAW or four track built into it or something. Bandcamp is fine as an ecommerce site and Soundcloud is.... well, it serves a purpose, but I would love an audio equivalent of Instagram.

it's been well over a decade and still nothing has filled the void that myspace left. despite its multifarious issues it really was the best and most fun space for sharing music and potentially building up a following

soundcloud had promise but once it became clear that the devs were unwilling to seriously control the proliferation of bot profiles i deleted my account

insta is p popular among more conventional instrumentalists and performers, i think. so like you get guitar players or whomever uploading 30 second video clips of some raw shreddage or whatevs

twitter is really good atm especially since so much stuff migrated over from tumblr. annoying that they now force you to have an account in order to read threads, really testing my impulse control not to start posting

missingNO, Thursday, 21 October 2021 05:24 (two years ago) link

As I've complained about ad nauseam in the Twitter C/D thread, you can get rid of the login popup by clearing your Twitter cookies regularly

On that note I haven't been able to view anyone's Instagram in a long time because they now seem to require a login that i don't have. I get hit with a login screen no matter what. If a restaurant used it as their website I guess I would not go to that reataurant

I follow a few people on Bandcamp, including our very own Ned Raggett.

If anything, Bandcamp is exactly the sort of not-social social music site I want— people will send me their profiles, I share mine, and if one gets notifications and such, it's pretty easy to put filters on the email so 99% of the emails go to a Bandcamp folder. I check it every week or so....

I don't see much lifestyle stuff on Instagram that would make me jealous. The closest to a bad feeling on there is a little sadness at seeing friends who moved to different parts of the country over the years so we can't hang out regularly except via messages. OTOH, without some kind of social media we'd be in even less contact and I wouldn't see video of them taking up competitive sailing or sonogram photos or etc..

instagram: "now you can create and share posts directly from your computer"

omg

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Thursday, 21 October 2021 23:14 (two years ago) link

It's weird that you can't reshare other people's posts on your Insta but you can in Facebook and you can't like or react to people''s stories in Insta but you can in Facebook. There's so much you can't do in Insta unless you have a separate app.

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Friday, 22 October 2021 08:51 (two years ago) link

Like, I just want to help my friend promote their radio show by reposting the macro they made for it, but I can't actually do that. So basically all Insta content is first-party, is that the idea?

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Friday, 22 October 2021 08:52 (two years ago) link

You can absolutely share it by either using a re-post app, screenshotting it and sharing that screenshot, or sharing it in your stories.

I'm a sovereign jizz citizen (the table is the table), Friday, 22 October 2021 13:29 (two years ago) link

you can do that but I understand why it's not built into the platform, that wasn't the original intention of instagram. I imagine they will shove that in at some point though and then instagram will become much worse. what is good about instagram is that it is basically a personal platform; content IS first party; things don't really go 'viral' ON instagram.

akm, Friday, 22 October 2021 14:56 (two years ago) link

your friends must not load up their stories with reposted videos of pottery techniques, wacky houses, "TONIGHT!!!" event postings, TikTok type videos where people send up their parents' old-fashioned ways, astrology content, viral cat videos, viral dog videos,

My Facebook wall has had a picture of a wrench and "Something went wrong. This may be because of a technical error that we're working to get fixed. Try reloading this page" for like a week and a half now.

Even though FB is 98% garbage, and even though I can access friends' pages and see stuff that way, I'd still like to fix it. Has anyone had this problem and fixed it? None of the solutions I've found online work.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Friday, 22 October 2021 16:12 (two years ago) link

akm, things absolutely go viral on instagram. you just don't follow the right meme pages, or follow people that repost them.

I'm a sovereign jizz citizen (the table is the table), Friday, 22 October 2021 16:24 (two years ago) link

i'd say if you don't see things go viral on instagram, you're probably following the right people

John Stockton buying a used car from (Karl Malone), Friday, 22 October 2021 17:01 (two years ago) link

true, I actually don't look at stories at all unless someone tells me to. I find them annoying. Instagram for me is essentially endless photos of dogs.

akm, Friday, 22 October 2021 17:04 (two years ago) link

i treat instagram posts like my public-facing "work" self, finished things, official announcements, pictures of myself where i look ok. i treat stories like my friends are reading, or people who are interested in my art - work in progress stuff, jokes, dumb polls, occasional close-up of things that look like assholes, etc

John Stockton buying a used car from (Karl Malone), Friday, 22 October 2021 17:14 (two years ago) link

some days I forget to post on FB, and almost every day, I don't read, and I'm always happier.

essentially using Messenger and using it to keep track of events at this point, as well as communicate with the cast of the show I'm doing now (cos they refuse to use traditional email, meh)

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Friday, 22 October 2021 17:17 (two years ago) link

Pretty sure this was completely intentional design and I'm kinda glad it is that way. It slows down viral spread to only mainly the Stories side
