who would have thought that in 2021 people would like Dave Matthews more than Dave Chappelle

Yeah, I think "Say Goodbye" is the weakest track on "Crash". Not a terrible tune, but I'd much rather listen to the other songs on the album.

― Lone Wanderer Mark II,

"Stay" has Doritos breath it wants to share with you.

think there are a good number of people that saw the DMB scene in Lady Bird and had a reevaluation of a band like DMB they felt ashamed to like at that age.

What’s cool abt them to me at the time was they seemed kind of sophisticated. Also it made a lot of sense of you were into like, classic rock, world music, jazz, jam bands, just an amalgamation of stuff that felt right at the time

"don't drink the water" is such a dope song

All of Before These Crowded Streets is legit. I suspect it was at least partially inspired by OK Computer: it's the only one of their pre-Stand albums that feels like it has a cohesive narrative structure; it's full of religious imagery; the growling angry Dave energy on "The Last Stop," "Don't Drink the Water," and "Halloween" is very "You don't remember, you don't remember/ Why don't you remember my name?" Also the album that I think showcases Carter the most.

it's actually pretty dark musically, which is why I loved it as a brooding high schooler, and probably the only one I'd revisit other than Under the Table and Dreaming

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 16:25 (two years ago) link

does the dark stuff happen because of the oral dave did in 'Rapunzel'? is that the message? was it the oral?

John Lakeman gives pipe lecture (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 16:44 (two years ago) link

the album opens with:

"Come and relax now
Put your troubles down
No need to bear
The weight of your worries here
Let them all fall away"

and then immediately after that dave is doing some oral

John Lakeman gives pipe lecture (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 16:46 (two years ago) link

well, yeah

so now you have dave, leno, and oral in your head while you're driving your kids to school. it is his darkest work.

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 16:51 (two years ago) link

I dreamed I was in this really weird musical last night with an abusive director that would SCREAM at you if you did something he didn't like or get a line wrong, and part of the show involved me playing "Crash into Me", except the lyrics were different, and since I haven't played that song on a guitar since 1998, I was messing it up.

the story of this dream is now being worked into a DMB-themed musical titled "It's Just Too Much"

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 16:52 (two years ago) link

oh yeah Rapunzel's worse than Crash's "And I come into you"! Also this:

Pantala Naga Pampa
Dave Matthews Band
Track 1 on
Before These Crowded Streets
The song’s title comes from a phrase an Indian chef for the band would utter in Tamil. In English, the phrase means “I have a python in my pants.”

Indexed, Wednesday, 20 October 2021 16:54 (two years ago) link

xp in your dream, did you fret-5 on the b-string with your pinkie? could not stand how smug people were when they played it like that, and it's worse.

John Lakeman gives pipe lecture (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 16:54 (two years ago) link

fuuuck no that's grounds for a beating!

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 16:57 (two years ago) link

"but it's the way dave plays it live". yeah well dave also uses an mic-less pickup live that makes his guitar sound like farts.

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 17:19 (two years ago) link

Listening now. Not to go back to the same well, but is the "JTR" chorus an intentional interpolation of the "Rain down/come on rain down on me" bit of "Paranoid Android"?

Indexed, Wednesday, 20 October 2021 19:16 (two years ago) link

it's definitely possible

the crazy part about this stuff -- and what makes before these crowded streets so interesting i think -- is it really goes against the grain of what dmb's like ... audience & marketing & the cliche version of them really is, to me. As if their entire image was about smuggling this dark brooding stuff into ... sorry john mayer ... a john mayer record, him as like a distillation of what made them appealingly fratty

or maybe at the time bc of grunge this kind of sour energy fit completely within frattiness & i'm just seeing it backwards, as darkness kind of bled from frat music in the 00s

xheugy eddy (D-40), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 19:43 (two years ago) link

I don't have a great view of all the live albums they've put out over the years but I believe Live in Chicago was recorded on the Before These Crowded Streets tour and has some pretty great stuff on it. Need to go back to it but always loved this version of "What Would You Say" with Maceo Parker

i have actually never listened to under the table and dreaming in full. "satellite" is lovely

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 21:03 (two years ago) link

How do you feel about "Typical Situation"?

Very nostalgic all of this is in a very personal way that goes way beyond whether it's "cool" or not. Hard to explain.

Evan, Wednesday, 20 October 2021 21:25 (two years ago) link

i really have yet to dislike a song lol, "typical situation" was a highlight

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 21:28 (two years ago) link

i recommend the music video for satellite if you haven't seen it

John Lakeman gives pipe lecture (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 21:41 (two years ago) link

I wondered how much more dark brooding is on Before these Crowded Streets than sous la table. I sometimes think the biggest difference is the choice of lead single. So I tried pairing up similar tracks:

life is good song: The Best of What's Around - Pantala Naga Pampa
just goofin song: What Would You Say - Stay (Wasting Time)
thinkin bout stuff song: Satellite - Spoon
internal suffering growler song: Rhyme & Reason - Halloween
uncomfortably "sexy" song: Lover Lay Down - Rapunzel
things ain't so bad, i really should be happy song: Jimi Thing - Pig
spooky, driving verses with happy chorus song: Warehouse - The Stone
carpe diem(B): Ants Marching - The Dreaming Tree

This is where the pairings become worse:
Pay for What You Get - The Last Stop I'd say these are both dark and brooding though with themes of very different scale. I'd say 'Pay For What You Get' is darker due to the more personal scale and the lack of hope/remedy.

Typical Situation - Don't Drink the Water Typical situation obviously inverts the dark brooding in the chorus.

Dancing Nancies - Crush Lyrics are obv different, but I swear you could play the 'Crush' bassline over 'Dancing Nancies' and it would fit. please try it in your head. These songs are similar.

always just thought this band was boring, saw em live twice in the late 90, total snoozefest. Idk, my uncle has played in a lot of funky acid jazz type bands that jam out and I like that stuff a lot more.

brimstead, Wednesday, 20 October 2021 22:08 (two years ago) link

Did your uncle jam out in a football stadium?

John Lakeman gives pipe lecture (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 23:07 (two years ago) link

I worry about potential bias from venue size, expectation, degree to which the performer is your uncle, etc.

John Lakeman gives pipe lecture (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 23:09 (two years ago) link

this band was my first conert :( i don't remember anything about it

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 23:10 (two years ago) link

yeah nah i guess I just mean, using “jazz chords” and stuff. I guess dmb had stuff like that but idk wasn’t feeling their jammage

brimstead, Wednesday, 20 October 2021 23:52 (two years ago) link

i have always loathed DMB after i did a summer stock production where i roomed with a guy who wouldn't stop fucking playing it all day and all night
don't feel bad about not reinvestigating this now

Was it a Dave Matthews Band musical you were in

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Sunday, 24 October 2021 16:15 (two years ago) link

DMB was always weird to me because when they were getting big I knew a bunch of people who went to college with him, and one who dated him. The general consensus was that he was a goofball who told poop jokes

Chappies banging dustbin lids together (President Keyes), Sunday, 24 October 2021 16:36 (two years ago) link

The bear eating its own head malfunctioned again last night in the technically ambitious "What Would You Play." Commenting on the disastrous state of the production, Dave Matthews said he is "shakin like a monkey, a lil baby."
