HBO's Succession - Season 2 and Beyond

While I was watching the Netflix reality show The Circle a few weeks ago, I realized that one of the things I like about it is all the Machiavellian jockeying for power -- forming alliances and making other strategic moves to gain trust and ultimately improve your standing in the game -- and that this is, in a way, no different from what drives the plot in Succession. When it's written well, that kind of thing is just really pleasurable to watch.

That stuff is a big part of what I enjoyed about wolf hall, and this show is weirdly similar in tones times too.

game of thrones, wolf hall and succession are the same show for me because of that, and I love all three

If this whole season moves at this new quasi real-time pace I might be OK with that. Watching them marinate was amazing.

The Shiv scene with Lisa Arthur was one of the best of the series. As with this whole episode, the characters didn’t have the advantage of being in a space where they belonged (their home, their office, a resort or as a guest of honor), and seeing her reactions to rejection was so, so good.

I've only just realised this is actually extremely good and gone deep into series 1.

Yeah I kinda wanted to hate it going in but it’s just so well done

I feel it should be a bad show on paper .. but then again I was very wrong!

I'm not surprised that Brian Cox's performance is rarely less than a+ though

i had to try it a couple of times, the hateability of everyone was so through the roof lol

they are so purely evil but also human enough to transcend that one dimensional caricature beloved of Iannucci and co. God knows what I'm driving at here but idk.. it's very good should suffice!

That doesn't really mean anything though, how does it rank with other HBO shows? They're almost never going to have as many viewers as basic cable.

Yeah it still made me laugh though.

Worse than "Girl Meets Farm", slightly better than "Teenage Euthanasia"

Right, we watched it through HBO Max and actually, by pure coincidence and luck on our end, started it about five minutes after it started airing anyway... but presumably that still doesn't get counted as live watch.

I thought it started at 10 ET (I was in Michigan on Sunday night), so I rewatched the last episode of S2 at 9, and then watched the S3 premiere at 10, at which point I discovered that it had already been available for an hour.

turns out that 60% of viewers were watching on digital platforms - about 900,000, up from 300k for S2

still probably not enough of a turnaround for Max

their individual decision trees are like crazy red string diagrams. i love seeing all the distrust, jealousy, ambition & childhood/family archetypes all converge and be so blended that you cant fully tell what anyone’s true motivation is

roman doing kendall AND shiv impersonations was gold

and kendalls meltdown tantrums at the end
is amazing how completely he truly is always, inevitably charlie brown & his whole family are always either collectively or separately lucy with the football.

Watching Kendall continually flame out is a little exhausting. But I liked the intimation that Roman of all of them actually kind of cares about the other ones. He's the only one with any real affection for all of them.
