Yessssss, so proud of her, waiting to dive in until I can really experience this.

This article on the production is great too: https://ra.co/features/3903

I can't get into Arp's stuff, for whatever reason I find it really unremarkable.

This latest Call Super release is fantastic. He has quite a distinct aesthetic. Thinking he was French I was going to make a comparison with the production work of Joakim but no Call Super is from London innit.

(The titles are Cherry Drops I and II. I don't know if it's a double EP, an LP or what.)

Getting perversely into how the drums are pointedly dry and rinky-dinky while the synths are super lush and psychedelic

gonna register my … bemusement with the new aya, maybe I’m on the wrong side of history but the sort of post Sophie glitchy robot diva vox aren’t doing it for me, obv production is virtuosic but it’s so intensely twitchy and in your face, maybe I’m just too old …

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Friday, 29 October 2021 12:59 (two years ago) link

I'll admit that the instrumental tracks are my faves, but I appreciate the balance and absolutely love the record, she did it. Aya has a such a clear voice through production & synthesizers, they always sound so alive and spontaneous, I can't imagine thinking like that. (I'll never get over the Turbulent Dynamics EP though.)

Tbh I'm having a harder time with the Lotic album, another brilliant producer turned vocalist. Except she's really singing, un-effected, a lot. All the songs work better in the context of the album than as singles, but it's so dense...there's a ton going on with the production, and then there are always all these layers of vocals happening on top. The back half of the album has some lovely moments though, especially 'Apart', I was waiting to hear that one again.

(really just wishing both of them success though, I know so much went into these albums)

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 29 October 2021 16:55 (two years ago) link

oh for sure, i'm very into, in theory, the sort of pro-social transhumanist vibe emanating from european experimental-club yet pop adjacent stuff like sophie, aya, lotic and ... some others im forgetting, stateside lagging on this tip. maybe arca is sort of parallel/precursor from a more hip-hop rhythmic axis

as for that production article, mixing into waves L2! a nice reminder that simplicity in DAW music is key

clunkers and bangers both abound on this comp but when it hits its cool:

Fraxinus - Position (Displacement)

Parris:

https://canyoufeelthesun.bandcamp.com/track/crimson-kano

First things first the 2nd Single from my album is up today ‘Crimson Kano’ ahead of full release on the 19th November. Here’s some words about it:

Crimson Kano started out as an idea in exploring polyrhythms and time signatures. I saw @ben___ufo mention this idea when describing using different polyrhythms to swap tempo seamlessly in a DJ set and I wanted to try to write a tool that explored this idea explicitly where it kinda leaves you like ‘wtf, how did I get here’. I’ve written a few tunes in 3/4 but never at 160 so wanted to show how you can explore two different rhythms at once at the same to make something sound fast and slow simultaneously.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 8 November 2021 17:16 (two years ago) link

Some gripping theory there, guess I should start paying attention to Ben UFO again. Tbh I had tuned him and his crew out because they were becoming such a dominant force in the scene that I didn't want my tastes to be majorly shaped by this small clique.

(Apologies if we've already cancelled mentions of 'the scene' here. Also thanks to Jordan for posting those Call Super links for me -- I tried searching for them when I posted but either they weren't up yet or I overlooked them.)

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 8 November 2021 17:21 (two years ago) link

And yeah instead of Hessle Audio I allow my tastes to be shaped by Livity Sound and Lobster Theremin these days.

If you want to hear some crazy metric modulation-based mixed (aka 'triplet mixes'), this mix is a flex:

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 8 November 2021 18:21 (two years ago) link

Yesss that’s the sauce. It’s very compelling in a not especially dancefloor-friendly way. Some of it is quite catchy. It’s sort of filling the same niche as math rock. Or Linkin Park? Could do without more of that.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 8 November 2021 20:07 (two years ago) link

Quite of few of his own edits on the track list. Some aya too.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 8 November 2021 20:10 (two years ago) link

Ha yes, I love it in a math rock/minimalist drummer brain way, but is essentially just showing off for other DJs/musicians, I'm sure no one on a dancefloor really cares about the elegance of your shift into a new tempo.

Now I'm going back to my fave MICHAELBRAILEY edits of yore:

https://michaelbrailey.bandcamp.com/track/grrl-x-mariah-we-belong-together-michaelbrailey-workout-runway-gym-edit

(he's a gem, we've been labelmates twice over)

viborg, you might be interested in the Donato Dozzy record that came out end of last year, as it is at 170 BPM but due to the polyrhythms and such, it truly does not sound like it excepting one track: https://donaotodozzysm.bandcamp.com/album/the-tao

I really like it.

I'm a sovereign jizz citizen (the table is the table), Monday, 8 November 2021 21:08 (two years ago) link

I did the old ‘change the tempo using triplets’ trick on an EP for Cut La Roc about 10 years ago but going from 140bpm breakstep to 93.3bpm hip hop and back. Probably not the best idea to keep people on a dancefloor in retrospect 😂.

two weeks pass...

playing the hell out of the Kessler, thanks all.

is there a good way to search mix tracklists, to find out who's putting "Only A Fool" into their sets and what they're playing alongside it?

lukas, Tuesday, 30 November 2021 21:45 (two years ago) link

Heh let me know if you find a better way, but I just use google and the search on the NTS site. I guess there's mixesdb.com, but that seems kinda limited.

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 November 2021 22:19 (two years ago) link

hmmm if mixesdb is to be believed no one has had the courage to play Only A Fool

lukas, Tuesday, 30 November 2021 22:57 (two years ago) link

Looks like it was maybe played on this Optimo mix way back in 2016, is that the same track?

Oh -- nunu's debut album, self-released, which I haven't had the occasion give proper attention to yet, but love what I've heard. Hard ambient, sort of cinematic + ecstatic sound design, apparently each track made from the same samples and synths:

I'm so over giant compilations, but I've been going through the most recent Juke Bounce Werk comp and it's very high-quality, lots of fun tracks (mostly 160 but gets more varied in the back half):

And I'm not sure if this has been posted above, but I slept on it and it's amazing
